More of the 12"X12" quilts. These are non-representational pieces that I liked.

And the back is an old Marimekko fabric.

"Amidst the Fire"  K. Grace Howe - Huntersville, NC - 2009  12"W x 13"L
Hand-dyed cottons, fusing, beading, machine appliqued and pieced and machine quilted.

The artist's statement was:  "There's a constant burning in my brain to produce, produce, produce. I can only do so much in the time given and yet, wonderfully, there is always another spark of creativity ready to be ignited. Much like an eternal flame, passion for the job never wanes."

Here are three in a series by Catherine Kleeman, they look great hung together.
"No Way Out" Catherine Kleeman - Maryland - 2011

"Round the Bend"  Catherine Kleeman - Maryland - 2014

"Scribble #18"   Catherine  Kleeman - Maryland - 2013

Three quilts in TCQC 12-12-21

It is Sunday so I am posting quilts from the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection.  I previously posted this on July 29, 2018.  These little 12" square quilts are interesting to collect as they show so many of the techniques and design ideas currently popular in the quilting world.  There are about one hundred in the Collection, by dozens of diferent artists. All of the artists are listed individually in the right side bar.

These three quilts by Catherine Kleeman of Maryland were all purchased from the online SAQA auction, in different years.   They are all 12X12 and, I believe made with all cotton fabrics and all machine pieced and quilted.   They have some hand embellishment.

I like to hang them together like this as they perfectly fit a space in my family room.

Viewing the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection 09-30-18

I am frequently asked what I do with the quilts in the Collection.  Mostly they are rolled or stored flat, covered to keep out the dust, and labeled so I can find them - mostly with the help of my dear friend Liz Williams.  I couldn't do it without her!   But I do display the quilts in my house so that I can enjoy them.  There is always one at the end of the hall that I walk down dozens of times a day (and night) and usually that is where I hang the latest addition.  A few are always on display - like Terry Grant's "Yellow Bowl"  and "Blue Threads" by Elizabeth Busch.   Both of which are on stretcher bars, not something I usually buy, but sometimes cannot resist.

I have a couple walls that are changing galleries, usually every three or four months.  With age I find it more difficult to hang the larger quilts by myself, so frequently hang groups of smaller quilts.  They might be grouped by subject, artist, color, design elements, whatever occurs to me at the time.   Tonight I am posting a "wall of red quilts", chosen just because I wanted to look at them for a while and they read RED.  Two are 80th birthday quilts from two friends, the others are rather recent additions to the Collection.

Petite Jungle - Jane Sassaman 2016, Round the Bend - Catherine Kleeman 2014,
Pomegranates - Rosie Caudillo 2017, Hummingbird - Lenore Crawford 2016,
Spring Chicken - Bonnie Damron 2018,  Birthday Bird - Patti Brooks  2018

Catherine Kleeman quilts in TCQC 11-09-14

There was so much interest last night in Catherine's quilt that I took a picture today of all three of her quilts that are in TCQC hanging together on my family room wall.

"No Way Out" (2011), "Scribble #18" (2013), "Round the Bend" (2014).  All 12"x12".
 All by Catherine Kleeman.

If you go to the right sidebar and click on Catherine's name you will pull up the previous posts about her quilts.

Catherine Kleeman quilt joins TCQC 11-08-14

Only four quilts from the SAQA auction were added this year.  But each is a standout.  The first selection  makes three of Catherine's quilts which hang very well together.

"Round the Bend"  Catherine Kleeman - Ruxton, MD 2014   12"x12"
Artist dyed and painted cotton fabrics. Raw-edge applique, machine stitched and quilted, hand embroidery.

Catherine has painted over the finished quilting stitches to make this wavy gold pattern.

No covered back here, all the stitches show, just as they should.

A nice complete label, except there is no date.  I'll write it in.
With all the pertinent information I can always contact Catherine if I am interested in more quilts.  Or want to refer another collector.

There seemed to be so much interest in Catherine's quilt I decided to repeat the post I did on 02-24-13 showing the first of her quilts I purchased at the SAQA Auction:

Catherine Kleeman quilt in TCQC 08-11-14

There are a couple of Catherine Kleeman's works in TCQC, I do admire what she does and like having it hanging on my wall.  This one was part of the SAQA 2013 Auction last fall.  I not only like the colors (my favorite yellow and blue), but the balance of the coil with the Xs.   I think the quilting compliments the design, as does the tiny bit of hand embroidery.
It is nice that she puts information on the label so that prospective buyers of other works can reach her easily.

There are a number of hits if you Google "Catherine Kleeman"; this one among them.

Catherine Kleeman quilt in TCQC 02-24-13

Here is another quilt from the SAQA 2011 online auction that I have not  previously posted.  The color is way off, the quilt is much more gold and orange, however, I photographed it on three different days and different times of the day and couldn't get a good color representation.  Sorry, Catherine.

"No Way Out"  Catherine Kleeman - Ruxton, MD 2011  12"x12"
Hand-dyed cotton fabric.  Machine quilted.
Other than the color (so poorly represented here) I like the motion created by the swirling blue line under the red X.  The varied background, which is both printed and pieced, lends dimension to the image.

The blue and red may be tubes rather than raw edged - there is no fraying anywhere are raw-edge, fused and then over stitched with zig-zag.  (Thanks, Catherine, for making this correction.) The blue is more teal than this picture.

This one green square near the right edge is printed rather than applied.

I appreciate that Catherine quilted the background before adding the applique, something I do myself as I think it gives more prominence to the applique.

She has signed the quilt with machine stitching.  Something that takes practice!

And she has adhered a business card to the back of the quilt providing a contact for interested viewers.  I have added the quilt title and date.

This photo of the back washes out the pumpkin orange and the gold.  But look how she has dealt with the facing - adding triangles to the corners which cuts down the bulk at those points.

It is a wonderful quilt and I am so happy it is part of the Collection.
