Adventures in Summer Festivaling: Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival

With the rain the East Coast has been getting this season, it almost feels like we’re honorary Seattlites. Flash flooding and 60 mph winds have been de rigor for the 2015 beach season. It certainly rained on my parade Saturday. The downpour kept me at bay from the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival at Rockwood Park. For those who haven’t heard of it, the Old Fashioned Ice Cream Festival is one of northern Delaware’s biggest fests. It even made The Food Network, and USA Today donned it one of the “top 10 food fests.”  However, Sunday the clouds parted and the sun shone down upon all of us who wanted to shop local wares and stuff our faces with gourmet treats. As someone who goes to great efforts to put on shows and maintain an internet presence for my own art, I understand how hard small businesses and artisans work. While I was enjoying the rare beauty of the day, I took the time to talk to some of the artisans.
Aurora Lamps- Makers of gorgeous geometric lanterns. At first glance, it seems like these are intricate paper lanterns, but in fact they’re made of recycled polycarbonate plastic. The way the light shines through the multicolored lanterns is beautiful. Visit them at www.corryscoolstuff.com.

Emkay Bead Designs- The lovely jewelry maker at Emkay Bead Designs featured rows and rows of adorable jewelry ranging from kitschy to fashionable. It even had geek friendly pieces. I snagged a pair of Harry Potter Deathly Hallows themed earrings! She doesn’t appear to have a website, but you can send email inquiries to Myrna622@comcast.net.

Eric W. Zippe Imagemaker- Eric is a local Wilmington, Delaware art photographer who specializes in fine art and wooden prints. His work ranges from delicate black and white shots of outstretched tree branches to Vaudevillian images of women and casinos. You can find his work at www.shop.ezippe.com.

Elk Creek Maple Syrup- Hailing from Westford, New York, owner Paula Hilyer makes divine maple products ranging from maple candy, maple butter, and of course maple syrup. One taste of this stuff and you’ll never want to go back to the corn syrup laden sludge from the grocery store. I almost forgot how much dimensionality real maple syrup had until I tried this. Paula and her husband are a sweet couple that clearly love their craft. Visit them at www.elkcreekmaplesyrup.com.

Coates’ Hotter Than Hell- Owner Rob Coates is an affable hot sauce maker from Wilmington, Delaware. Ranging from mild to spicy, each sauce certainly has kick. This company’s motto is “feel the heat, savor the flavor,” with an emphasis on enhancing food with heat rather than masking it. I picked up a bottle of their medium heat sauce, En Fuego Habanero, whose ingredients include habanero and cayenne peppers. Check out their sauces at www.facebook.com/hotterthanhellsauce.

Until next time, this is your kindly local art scene reporter, Kirsten Ashley

Shop Small Shop Local Small Business Saturday

You've been hearing about Small Business Saturday for a few years now.
Totally a marketing ploy to get you to help support your local communities and small businesses by keeping your hard earned money going round in places you live...
It's a very good idea to try to market for our communities!
With our Delaware Etsy Team being based on local artists and sellers in the area that have Etsy shops, we are very pleased to announce that Etsy.com has expanded an option to all of us to show off where you can find our work in person - it's called ETSY LOCAL.

This is the kind of positive movement we love to see come out of the Etsy community.
So get out to wherever you are locally and help support your local small businesses!

{Shop Feature Friday!} Green Ribbon Gems

Hello! My name is Gina and I blog over at Hiya Luv!
I also have an Etsy shop called Hiya Luv Handmade.
I am really excited to be a new contributing writer on the Del Etsy Blog!
I will be featuring fresh, fun, eclectic handmade etsy shops from around Delaware on Friday's and am really thrilled to get started this week!

Shop Owner Genevieve has an amazing shop filled with brilliant gems for all occasions! Here are some of her current favorites!

During Bridal Season Green Ribbon Gems offers a 10% discount for brides who order 4 or more pieces of jewelry! Wouldn't these makes great gifts for bridesmaids?

To learn more about Genevieve and Green Ribbon Gems, I asked her a few questions about her inspiration, shop, and products.

1. When did you open up your shop and how did you decide what you were going to sell?

I opened up my Etsy shop in April of 2010. I have actually been selling jewelry on my own website at www.greenribbongems.com for a couple of years, and have been doing jewelry and craft shows for about 3 years now. I'm not sure exactly what made me decide to sell jewelry. I think I've always enjoyed wearing it and thought it would be a lot of fun to make!

2. Your items are so appealing to the eye and gorgeous! They are like pieces of art!

Where do you find inspiration to create your products?

My inspiration usually comes from colors in nature like fall leaves, the ocean, bright citrus fruits, vibrant flowers, etc. I like to try to capture these gorgeous colors in my jewelry. I also like simple, classic, clean lines so I tend to do a lot of wire-wrapped pendants and earrings with just a single gemstone or crystal.

3. Do you release new products and discontinue others on a regular basis? If so, how often? We don't want to miss out! :)

I have all kinds of new products that I try to add whenever I can! As far as timing for when I add new products, it's mostly a matter of finding time to photograph everything I've made. My 2 year old keeps me pretty busy most of the time! :)

I sometimes discontinue products, but not very often.

4. What is your best seller right now?

I sell a lot of the flat briolette pear shaped Swarovski crystal wire-wrapped earrings in a variety of colors. I think the simplicity of the design and the classic shape is appealing to a lot of people. I made an olive pair for myself, and wear them all the time! Here's a link to the olive earrings:

5. Today you...

Danced with my daughter, made gingersnaps with my daughter and her friend, made 4 bracelets for my neighbor, watched The Office with my husband, and finished off the evening with some chocolate chip mint ice cream!

6. Tomorrow you hope to...

Photograph some new jewelry, get all my current orders shipped, convince my daughter that vegetables are edible, have some quality snuggle time with my husband, and eat some chocolate chip mint ice cream.

7. Yesterday you...

We built quite a few block towers, did puzzles, played on the playground, read stories, photographed some earrings, and of course I ate some chocolate chip mint ice cream. You need the extra calories when you're 6 months pregnant. :)

Do you have a favorite from her shop?
Isn't Genevieve divine? Her shop is just as lovely! Be sure to stop by Green Ribbon Gems and say hello!

If you would like to be featured or know somebody in Delaware with an etsy shop who would, please email send me an email: gina {at} hiyaluv {dot} com

Happy Etsying!
