WHAT'S MODERN IS VINTAGE

Since 1997, I have followed a mantra when procuring garments for Decades.  I always ask myself "does this look modern?"  Case in point: this 1980s Lanvin strapless dress with velvet asymmetric overlay atop a cream silk skirt.  This gown manages to look both of the past, present, and future.  However, the mix is entirely modern.  I believe this dress was designed during the Creative Direction tenure of Maryll Lanvin, a former model who married the heir to the house, Bernard Lanvin.

IT'S A WRAP ON LV CHECKS

If there has been one ubiquitous trend that we have seen played out to death this season, it is the Louis Vuitton check collection.  The check looks were utterly charming when first descending the LV escalator runways, but after seeing what appears to be every A, B, C, and D-list actress wearing a version of the look on the red carpet, I say "good riddance checks" and give me my dots!  Dots aplenty exist on this blue jersey and silver lurex knit wrap dress from late 1960s Lanvin.  A great antidote to the LV check, no?

BLACK MAGIC

Designers have been offering several alternative to basic black on the runways for the past few seasons. I've seen so much color blocking, mad prints, and ikat in rainbow bright hues, it makes me want to put down the rose colored glassed and pick up a pair of Lagerfeld opaque black frames.

No matter how many options a girl has instead of donning LBD's, I just can't away from the fact that a beautiful black dress is and always will be, the épitomé of timeless chic. The trick to standing out in an ink colored sea of frocks, is to find an ensemble with an impeccable cut, elegant draping and unique detailing.

Recently, a few of our favorite stylish stars popped by our salon and perused the racks for dresses that would rock the runway. Here's a few of my personal picks for best dressed:

Although Lindsay Lohan caught some flack from Hollywood Life for wearing this Galanos gown (sideboob was the issue at hand), I have to say that I think she knocked it out of the park at a recent White House gala. In my humble opinion, it's sacrilege to question the taste factor of anything made by James Galanos, a favorite of Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and former White House resident, Nancy Reagan. I mean, c'mon. It's kind of hard picturing Mrs. Reagan in anything flashy or too revealing.

And this dress has everything an elegant ensemble should have, including an exquisitely crafted paneled corset waist, which is neither too sexy nor inappropriate for our nation's capitol. More to the point, it's age appropriate. Ladies under 30 should embody youthful, whimsical designs on the red carpet.

Oh, and by the way Hollywood Life, don't think we didn't notice later posts which lauded Lindsay's look. In fact, you spelled out just how to get the starlet's White House style, right down to her lipstick. Hmmm . . .

Nobody knows how to rock retro glamour quite like Jennifer Tilly, who scored major fashion points in a recent appearance at the opening of her new Broadway production, Don't Dress for Dinner. I'm completely mad for this Dior number, which with it's fitted bodice, 50s style skinny shoulder straps and asymmetrical waist with full skirt, embodies star power. The dress fits's Tilly to a T and ladies, take note. This is how to do sexy while keeping it classy. I also love how Tilly accentuated her look with a little sparkle. The actress dipped into her own collection, pinning a brooch that allegedly belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. As far as diamonds are concerned, you can't go wrong with Elizabeth Taylor's bangles and baubles. They've always brought her luck.

Personally, I'm on the fence when it comes to sheath dresses. I think they can look matronly as opposed to marvelous. But Maya Rudolph's Lanvin black quilted sheath dress at the 2012 Comedy Awards gave me reason to rethink my sheath position.

The elbow-length sleeves and above-the-knee cut on this number save the sheath from seeming too Granny. In fact, I'd say Maya looked quite fashion forward. What sets this sheath apart is the theatric collar. Sometimes, large lapels look great on the catwalk but bizarre on the sidewalk. This collar on the other hand, gives a little drama to the classic cut of the dress, making this choice super stylish, and not silly. Of course, Rudolph, who has sartorial savvy as well as comedic prowess, knows to save the hijinks for on-screen appearances, not the carpet.

OSCARS OSCARS OSCARS

As we recouperate from the madness that Oscars Week is, everything is still hazy. We were thrilled when Jean Dujardin won, happy to see Maryl Streep add another statuette in her collection, weirdly obsessed with Angelina Jolie's black velvet Versace gown..and her right leg...elated to see Gwyneth Paltrow perfect in Tom Ford, but most of all we were happy to see Melissa McCarthy in her custom made Marina Rinaldi gown. The most important thing in a ceremony like this, which always tends to be on the boring/conservative side, is to look beautiful, not the dress or the borrowed jewels or the clutch, but the woman herself. Melissa looked radiant. Her smile was contagious. Her awe of being recognized was visible. She looked like a real beautiful woman who took the time to appreciate a surreal event like the Oscars and the red carpet.
With that said the following are some snapshots from the world of Decades and our beautiful friends celebrating last weekend.

YOU HAVE NEVER LOOKED THIS GOOD

Congratulations to Meryl Streep in her Oscar win last night!! She is simply one of the most beautiful and talented actresses in the world!! Well, you have by now guessed that we are big fans of her work and how chic and ageless she always looks. Last night was no exception. She looked flawless in the gold Lanvin gown. It reminded us of the vintage Yves Saint Laurent Haute Couture piece we posted a while back.
It is said that the Lanvin gown that Meryl Streep wore to the Oscar Ceremony last night, is a custom made Lanvin eco friendly gown, which makes it even more special.
We applaud the efforts of many designers now days using Eco Certified fabrics to make beautiful clothes, but let's not forget that buying vintage and recycling your clothes is eco friendly as well. So if you buy this dress, you are helping the planet to stay green, you will always be reminded of a perfect moment in the history of movies and let's not forget it's haute couture.

RED CARPET OR VALENTINE'S DAY?

Red dress on the red carpet? Yes. Red dress on Valentine's day? Not so much. You wouldn't want to match all the table arrangements or the roses you will receive:). Not to worry though, we will post later the perfect dress to wear to celebrate lovers day!
This vintage Lanvin evening gown, in the most stunning red, cut with a mermaid tail, with velvet bow and one sleeve, is a statement dress. We love a bold red dress. It manifests passion and makes you feel confident. Pair it with gold sandals and red lipstick and we guarantee you will feel sexier and fearless.

Lovin' Lanvin

The color purple was discovered by prehistoric nomadic tribes but it was popularized by Byzantine royalty. The main component of the dye was gathered from the saliva of predatory sea snails found in the Mediterranean. Because of the labor intensive process the Tyrian dye was specially reserved for the imperial court. If you would like to learn more about the color purple click here, because I'm moving on to the dress!

The Lanvin dress below is a deep purple silk brocade with an amazing black floral lace pattern. The corseted top gives way to a three tiered full skirt concealing a few layers of tulle for added volume and drama. The hem is lined in black lace, adding a subtle feminine flare. A full décolletage is a wonderful thing, and the straps falling just off the shoulder provide the perfect canvas for sparkling work of art - perhaps by Bulgari?!
(The painting above is "La découverte de la pourpre" or "The Discovery of Purple" by Peter Paul Rubens)

OSCAR WINNER!

Antonio Castillo was born of a noble Spanish family, went on to work at The House of Lanvin in 1950, was nominated for a Tony in 1959 for the musical Goldilocks (Elaine Stritch was in the show!); and won an Oscar for Costume Design in 1972 for Nicholas and Alexandra. That's an impressive resume in my book. The dress below is a heavy navy silk and cream strapless cocktail dress from 1955 when women wore an evening dress to the theatre, as opposed to today, when a Broadway show is made up of an audience in board shorts and hoodies! I particularly love the color combo (navy and white always looks right) and the way the sashes wrap around the bust and then fold over the hip and hang to practically the length of the skirt with a fringe scarf edge just like a theatre producer would wear over his tux on opening night.

This dress is in rather extraordinary condition considering it is 55 years old. I am the biggest fan of what Alber Elbaz does for Lanvin today (and my favorite new article of clothing is the Lanvin for H&M cream tux that I've worn three times). No matter which designer has been behind the House of Lanvin the creations are always desirable decade after decade.

ROUND TWO

When we first posted this cream Lanvin cocktail dress, we knew it would be a favorite with fashionistas hitting the awards season red-carpets. Today we are thrilled to announce that we have gained another of these lovely cream goddess gowns. If you would like to see this amazing gown's first and second appearance click here and here.

Made of silk satin, this dress befits an array of formal occasions. The ruching on the bust and waist compliments the midnight blue cascade that ideally fits around the neck. Whether wearing the cascade's bow at the shoulder for added drama or the nape, for the perfect over-the-shoulder pose, you're bound to be a stunning red-carpet favorite. We can't wait to see who takes advantage of round two.

Splendor in the Grass

Nothing could be more appropriate for a summer garden party or a simple picnic by the lake with friends than this Lanvin dress. The ladies in this lovely Edouard Manet painting could only have been so lucky to don Jeanne Lanvin. If they had, they wouldn't have needed to strip down halfway through lunch! But we digress....

If a lakeside picnic is not your speed, may we suggest the Serpentine Gallery Garden Party instead. The grey, black and white gingham taffeta is the perfect material, especially when lined with black grosgrain ribbon. There are two long black & white taffeta strips that are to be tied and used as a waist sash. Below we have shown two ways of arranging the sash, however the options are limited only by your imagination.

Lanvin grey gingham taffeta gown with black and white taffeta sash, c.70's. Contemporary size 4 SOLD
