ENDLESS LOVE

All the eyes were on MOCA last Saturday celebrating its 35th anniversary. But as soon as the lights went out Diana Ross was at the center of the attention with a surprise performance. She has been an inspiration for Team Decades through the years and it never stops. From her amazing voice to her super glam outfits from Bob Mackie to Tom Ford, we are always inspired. It was emotional to see her in a bright red sequin gown perform "I'm Coming out" to a room full of artists. We continue to celebrate Diana Ross with these iconic looks. Click on the links below to purchase or email us with any questions.
The time has come for me
To break out of this shell
I have to shout
That I am coming out !!!

GET LUCKY IN GREEN GALANOS

Although today we should be feeling the luck of the Irish, I am feeling Byzantine looking at this fifty shade of green James Galanos 1960s evening gown with elaborate gilt and pearl drop embellishment throughout the top.  The fabric of the dress is silk chiffon with various stripe shades of green, lurex, and a touch of unexpected magenta that coordinates with the velvet sash.  This may not be a design by Irish createurs Sybil Connolly or Louise Kennedy, but great Greek Mr. Galanos knows that a g green gown will bring on the envy!

SKINNY GODDESS

Calling all skinny Goddesses!  Here is a marvelous James Galanos magenta one shoulder gown embroidered with beautiful white crystals that requires that ultimate elite petite chic-ette.  A Goddess is always on trend.  A one-shoulder never goes out of a style.  And it's Mr. Galanos so you know how gorgeously constructed this garment is because Mr. G made things as gorgeous on the inside as the outside.  Vive American Couture!

Galanos Satin

I didn't watch the MTV Music Video Awards, but I saw the photos.  I found the entire fashion parade fairly uninspiring and mostly nauseating.  Everyone just tries so hard.  My goal for a chic Decades woman is "don't try too hard this fall".  Effortless and elegant is always sexy and always on trend.  James Galanos knew this all too well.  This latte satin long sleeve mini tunic with car wash pleats is a little Gatsby, a little Farrow, and totally chic.  A subtle statement is sometimes the boldest of all.  Imagine this dress with a pair of Saint Laurent T-straps and you have the perfect fall transitional dress for NY Fashion Week that is effortless and doesn't induce nausea.  I will be in NYC for Fashion Week so make sure you follow my Twitter and Instagram for immediate images with witty bon mots direct from the front row.

GALANOS HAND

This is Buddha's hand citron and below is James Galanos halter two piece magnificent creation. This ensemble is made of two separate pieces. The floor length skirt comes with the thigh high slit which can be worn in front or on the sides. The halter top draped over the skirt exposes the back while it drops to the floor. Galanos might have taken inspiration from nature and its offerings but he has shown over and over his undisputed talent and when it comes to dresses, maybe his hand is as precious as Buddha's.

DECADES OF GALANOS

James Galanos is likely America's greatest living Couturier.  His work spans so many Decades...he opened his eponymous house in 1952 and retired in 1998.  Now he devotes his time to abstract photography, but let's give the man some major props for being an active American designer (based in Los Angeles nonetheless) who shows his collections for FIVE decades.  Christian Dior remained active for only one decade.  He opened his house in 1947 and dropped dead in 1957 either from swallowing a fish bone or swallowing another kind of bone during a particularly eventful sexual encounter.  In polite circles, they call it a "heart attack."  I give Dior credit for remaining so relevant nearly six decades after his death while only having ten years to solidify his position in the annals of fashion history.  Both Mr. Galanos and Monsieur Dior are legends.  The James Galanos late 50s ensemble's dress length reminds me of the proportion suggested by Raf Simons earlier this month at his debut Dior Couture show.

This wool-silk blend houndstooth tank dress with single button ruffle collar cropped jacket could look totally modern when paired with a colorful shoe as Marion Cotillard has been styled when she was the first actress to wear Raf Simons-designed Dior on the red carpet.  I do have a rule when it comes to vintage: never do head-to-toe vintage, so use Cotillard as an inspiration and grab this James Galanos ensemble that's ready for an update with your modern accessories.

BLACK MAGIC

Designers have been offering several alternative to basic black on the runways for the past few seasons. I've seen so much color blocking, mad prints, and ikat in rainbow bright hues, it makes me want to put down the rose colored glassed and pick up a pair of Lagerfeld opaque black frames.

No matter how many options a girl has instead of donning LBD's, I just can't away from the fact that a beautiful black dress is and always will be, the épitomé of timeless chic. The trick to standing out in an ink colored sea of frocks, is to find an ensemble with an impeccable cut, elegant draping and unique detailing.

Recently, a few of our favorite stylish stars popped by our salon and perused the racks for dresses that would rock the runway. Here's a few of my personal picks for best dressed:

Although Lindsay Lohan caught some flack from Hollywood Life for wearing this Galanos gown (sideboob was the issue at hand), I have to say that I think she knocked it out of the park at a recent White House gala. In my humble opinion, it's sacrilege to question the taste factor of anything made by James Galanos, a favorite of Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and former White House resident, Nancy Reagan. I mean, c'mon. It's kind of hard picturing Mrs. Reagan in anything flashy or too revealing.

And this dress has everything an elegant ensemble should have, including an exquisitely crafted paneled corset waist, which is neither too sexy nor inappropriate for our nation's capitol. More to the point, it's age appropriate. Ladies under 30 should embody youthful, whimsical designs on the red carpet.

Oh, and by the way Hollywood Life, don't think we didn't notice later posts which lauded Lindsay's look. In fact, you spelled out just how to get the starlet's White House style, right down to her lipstick. Hmmm . . .

Nobody knows how to rock retro glamour quite like Jennifer Tilly, who scored major fashion points in a recent appearance at the opening of her new Broadway production, Don't Dress for Dinner. I'm completely mad for this Dior number, which with it's fitted bodice, 50s style skinny shoulder straps and asymmetrical waist with full skirt, embodies star power. The dress fits's Tilly to a T and ladies, take note. This is how to do sexy while keeping it classy. I also love how Tilly accentuated her look with a little sparkle. The actress dipped into her own collection, pinning a brooch that allegedly belonged to Elizabeth Taylor. As far as diamonds are concerned, you can't go wrong with Elizabeth Taylor's bangles and baubles. They've always brought her luck.

Personally, I'm on the fence when it comes to sheath dresses. I think they can look matronly as opposed to marvelous. But Maya Rudolph's Lanvin black quilted sheath dress at the 2012 Comedy Awards gave me reason to rethink my sheath position.

The elbow-length sleeves and above-the-knee cut on this number save the sheath from seeming too Granny. In fact, I'd say Maya looked quite fashion forward. What sets this sheath apart is the theatric collar. Sometimes, large lapels look great on the catwalk but bizarre on the sidewalk. This collar on the other hand, gives a little drama to the classic cut of the dress, making this choice super stylish, and not silly. Of course, Rudolph, who has sartorial savvy as well as comedic prowess, knows to save the hijinks for on-screen appearances, not the carpet.

GORGEOUS IN GALANOS

Some have turned their noses down at SoCal style, but if there's anyone in the world to turn the haters into lovers, it's James Galanos. Period. Galanos is perhaps single-handedly responsible for creating old school Hollywood Glam. Think luxurious fabrics and fur, exquisite draping, luscious fabrics, meticulous cuts and ornate detailing, such as his iconic gilded butterfly.

Personally, I love Galanos' rags to riches story, which proves that hard work, belief in one's self, and following your heart's desire to be creative pays off. Turns out, taste and elegance can come from Jersey. Shoresters, take note. Here's a few fun fashion facts from the life and work of James Galanos:

Galanos first arrived on our sunny shores as a youngster determined to make a name for himself in fashion. After a dissapointing start in New York as a clerical assistant in sartorial salon of Hattie Carnegie (Pauline Triegère and Norman Norell got their start at Carnegie's), Galanos moved to L.A. to design for a husband and wife team, the Lesavoys. Sadly, the duo divorced and Galanos lost his gig.

Of course, if you're having on trouble on 7th Avenue, there's just may be a place for you on Sunset. Jean Louis, head designer at Columbia Pictures, hired Galanos to sketch ensembles for pictures. He then traveled to Paris, working for Robert Piguet. After another frustrating try at designing in New York, where Galanos was let down by design positions which didn't encourage him to express himself creatively, the upstart up and hightailed it back to Tinseltown and launched a line of his own. Upon seeing Galanos' creations, which looked haute couture though were pret-a-porter pieces pronounced that Galanos would soon be a household name.

And he was because the movies came calling again. Galanos designed ensembles for icons such as Rosalind Russell, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor not to mention Grace Kelly and Marlene Deitrich who sought Galanos' "glamour quotient".

And frankly, who doesn't need a little glamour sprinkled like fairy dust into their lives. Even if you don't have a photo opportunity in your immediate future, this dress is guaranteed to make you feel as your life is one red carpet that you're meant to float down and through, always gracious, elegant and of course, glamourous.

Isn't he inspiring? Both the man and his clothes give a gal reason to seek the stars. Perfect for our town.

IN THE PALE . . .

I love street style snaps. Every season, I'm more psyched to check out who's wearing what to to the shows rather than see the shows themselves. Everyone has a secret guilty pleasure. You may remember SATC Carrie's: eating Saltine crackers smeared with jam while flipping through fashion magazines. My take: huddling over my Macbook with currant crackers and a li'l cheese plate--not that there's anything wrong with jam, I just have a savory tooth, in fact call me the savory toothed tiger--scrolling madly though Tommy Ton, The Sartorialist, Stockholm Street Style (I mean, who doesn't want to move to Sweden? The fashion! But ooooh, the weather. Coming from Cali . . . Hhhhm), but you get the drift.

I love seeing how the editrixes and walking hangers of the world put their pieces together. I love catching a new skirt length, a vintage find, a lace veil, Prada creepers with a little schoolgirl frock, embroidered denim, battered Birkins, underwear-as-outerwear, black must-have moto jackets, Pendleton blankets as cloaks, wild-style prints, Air Walks kicking it with Kirkwoods, girl's with striped ties, boys with striped ties, and all the ifs, ands and buts (literally) in between. If you ask me, the streets are always the spot to clock what's about to happen and if you're going to go on-trend, it's always better to get the first than be the last one at the party, slightly drunk and swaying in the corner to the bleeps and beats of Giorgio Moroder.

So, while looking at Tommy Ton's latest pics for style.com, I couldn't help but notice all my favorite picks were pale beauties: pastel pinks, creams and ivories, sky blues, slate greys, lemon chiffons, mints and lilacs. Going pale is a definite statement-maker, though what you're getting at is subtle nod to the future that's modern and pretty at the same time. You can go monochromatic when it comes to pale colors or throw on a peony flowing skirt with a slashed and burned charcoal tee for a mix and match point.

Personally, I spent the majority of my weekend pulling creamy cable knits crew sweaters, pink ballerina inspired dresses, ice blue button downs, bone colored denim, and banana colored tee out of the depths of my closet to make sure they now hang front and center. Then, I continued my whirlwind excavation here at Decades headquarters, where I pulled my favorite pale pieces for you to enjoy.

Spring is here, the sun is out and about, so why not pull on an icy boucle Chanel® or carry a vintage Germaine Guerin or think pink and go vintage Galanos for your next night out with the girls? Me, I'll be the one in the ivory vintage Galanos gown. Sigh.

Dear Santa, do you make shimmy down chimneys in March? Might be easier on the reindeer. I'm just saying . . .

Get your hands on the perfect pale pieces by clicking here!

GALANOS TRAVELS EAST

Since Galanos seems to be the theme of today, here is another amazing Galanos piece from the early 80's. This 2 piece ensemble in silk is inspired by Chinese clothing and art. The top can be worn by itself as a dress and the vest can be worn separately with jeans for a more casual look. The whole ensemble is fully lined and in pristine condition.
In true Galanos form this silhouette is narrow with a fluid ease, but despite his fondness for black in design, he was also known for his unusual combinations of colors just like in this piece.

FROM HAUTE COUTURE TO READY TO WEAR

If you are still looking for an Oscar dress or maybe you are planning your wedding this Galanos beaded gown is just what you will need to look fabulous and chic. There is so much to say about James Galanos and the way he changed the fashion world, besides wearing all the most important woman in America from nancy Raegan to Kim Basinger.

Anne-Marie Schiro of New York Times wrote about James Galanos "To him, fashion is all about making women look beautiful, and he has devoted 44 years of his life to designing clothes to that end." Bernardine Morris in an introduction to the catalogue of Galanos' retrospective exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum in 1996 wrote: "He was always a hero to all those who worshiped at the feet of fashion, not just those who wore the clothes, Galanos was heralded as the equal of any of the mythic group of French designers who represented the apotheosis of fashion. The difference, then and now, is that Galanos' clothes were ready-to-wear; the French Haute Couture made custom clothes. In this, he is truly an American designer. For, in this country, it is ready-to-wear that dominates fashion, a lesson the French learned after he pointed the way. This may be James Galanos' major contribution to the fashion world: he brought brilliance and quality to styles meant to be bought off the rack".

Indian Summer

Fall has arrived in Southern California, believe it or not. The foliage around here is not turning the beautiful colors, but is just plain dying as the heat is reaching over 100 degrees. But, if say the weather made any kind of sense and wasn't perhaps a sign of the coming apocalypse, both of these options would be perfect for a fall look. The vintage piece on the left, designed by Galanos, is one of my favorites of all time. She is also wearing a beautiful sable wrap from Christian Dior both from the 60's. On my right, the modern dress is Dolce and Gabbana, and the fur is Rick Owens, both designed within the last few years.

BLACK AND WHITE AND ALWAYS RIGHT

A black and white silk crepe evening gown is really a necessity in your closet! It will always be right. When executed by James Galanos it takes on an entirely elevated sense of importance as Mr. Galanos brings a little So Cal elegance to this international staple of the "Best Dressed" crowd. The bold black floral print is set against a smooth white crepe silk that is held up by two spaghetti straps (one adorned with a super size corsage) and the dress is trimmed from the hips to the hem by black and white satin inserts at each side. This dress makes me wish someone would throw a Black and White party. I would suggest this dress in an instant, so think ahead as you never know when your invitation will arrive with the dress code engraved "black and white." However, don't limit this dress just for a black and white fete...this dress is color blind and ready for all settings.
