HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY

Helen Rose probably designed one of the most famous dresses of the 20th century: Grace Kelly's wedding gown when she married Prince Rainer in 1956.  That design has probably inspired countless brides-to-be and was surely an inspiration point for last year's memorable wedding attire of Kate Middleton.  Ms. Rose was a two-time Oscar winning Costume Designer who was nominated a further eight times.  Some of her most memorable costumes are for Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.  Incidentally, she designed Taylor's wedding dress to Conrad Hilton.  In the late 60s she added couturier to her resume when she began her eponymous house.  I love when we get a Rose design as it makes me feel particularly proud to be a Native Angeleno because this is the town that taught the world how to dream and Helen Rose dressed the players in the dreams as well as the dreamers.  This lemon chiffon round neck and cap sleeve gown is figure flattering and has embroidery that reminds me a bit of a sari.  Perhaps Rose was dreaming of a future Bollywood back in the late 1960s when she designed this sophisticated and camera-ready gown.  Are you ready for your close up?

TEA WITH HELEN ROSE

Why do we love vintage? Well, it gives one an opportunity to wear something with mystery that is unique and most often one-of-a-kind. In a world of fast fashion, where trends are universal and luxury is ubiquitous, vintage offers fashion as history with incomparable style.

Take this wonderful 1960s Helen Rose creation in tea-hued silk draped jersey with an intricately embroidered top, for example. Ms. Rose won two Oscars as a costume designer and of course designed one of the most legendary wedding dresses: the gown Grace Kelly wore to marry Prince Rainier in 1956. This gown was likely made in her custom atelier that she opened in the 1960s. The tea color is a sophisticated and unusual color for an evening gown and the intricate cut out paillette, sequin, and crystal embroidered top is worthy of the highest Couture technique. Whispering admirers will ask, "Who made that dress?" when you walk through a crowded affair. That's the beauty of vintage, as it often keeps the crowds guessing!

GOOD ENOUGH FOR A PRINCESS

If it's good enough for Princess Grace Kelly, it's good enough for you! Helen Rose famously designed Grace Kelly's legendary wedding dress worn in 1956 for her nuptials to Prince Rainier of Monaco. That may have been one of Helen Rose's most famous achievements, but she also won two Academy Awards for Costume Design (The Bad and the Beautiful in 1952 and for I'll Cry Tomorrow in 1955) and was nominated an additional 8 times. In the late 1960s, she left the movie studios and opened her own atelier where this dress was designed. The striking citron draped jersey V neck gown is embellished with jeweled straps and has a flattering empire waist. As an added bonus, there is a gift with purchase. We jest. The gown actually has a lovely coordinating silk opera coat for added drama. The mandarin collar and crystal encrusted buttons on the full-volume coat scream "Best Actress" so we think this is an Academy Award winning concoction. Of this show stopper we hope you will agree: "we like you...we really like you."
