DECADES IS A MUSUEM

People constantly tell us that Decades is like a museum.  However, you are able to BUY our collection.  This Arnold Scaasi dress was featured in an Ohio State University Museum exhibition in 1998, but now we have it.  Scaasi said this dress was made to uplift a woman's spirit and when Eri tried it on (check out her Instagram for pics of it on her modeling said dress @flaneur_eri) she said it made her feel amazing, too.  How can you not fall in love with this iridescent tomato red brocade strapless gown with a tulle bustle?  It's Cannes-tastic!

A CUT ABOVE

"Having a dress fitted at Scaasi is just like having a tummy tuck without the pain". That was the word among socialites who could afford a made-to-order Scaasi gown. Arnold Scaasi dressed every influential woman, from first ladies to movie stars. His love for color and pattern, especially bold flowers like this dress, was always praised by critics as "exotic color alliances" and the full skirts gave women a sense of being part of a fairy tale.
The 1980's unleashed a voracious appetite for fashion and extravagance. And Scaasi was there to make the perfect gowns, combining color and volume. This exuberant dress is a perfect example of something so well made that never goes out of style.

Architecturally 2 Late...

Sadly this architectural plum satin Arnold Scaasi dress sold before we could post it on the blog, but it did sell to someone fabulous that we LOVE.

The dress was a wonderfully rich shade of purple, the sort that would be reserved for royalty. The bodice came to a peak just to the left of the bust, then the material gathered at the waist and was finished of with a series of three bows. This little cocktail dress was made for a grand entrance and nothing less.

Mrs. Santa Claus Make Over

This is a busy week for Santa Claus. But as everyone knows, behind every great man, is an even greater woman: Mrs. Santa Claus! We believe this year Mrs. Santa Claus deserves a make over and we suggest Arnold Scaasi to the rescue. What could be more divine to wear in the North Pole than this Scaasi early 70s broadtail and fox theatre suit? With tights and boots (and gloves), this will keep you dramatically toasty when the temperatures drop. However, the cropped jacket easily transitions to Metropolitan chic dress when worn separate of the companion skirt. Wear the jacket with jeans and a cashmere turtleneck for a great day look. For evening, we love the jacket over a cocktail or floor length dress. As an ensemble, it has an Alexander McQueen-meets-the Highlands-meets Mrs. Claus vibe and is pure theatricals; hence the term, theatre suit. Together or individually, this broadtail and fox ensemble from Scaasi makes us chuckle "Ho Ho Ho."

Disco in the Desert

If you are a fan of sequins (and how could you not be - especially if you read this blog!) then we have the perfect party ensemble, brought to you by the lovely, talented, and head-turning Arnold Scaasi. The top is a simple sleeveless black satin number with a crew neck. The party starts below the waist, with full bell bottom sequin pants. They have been covered with silver sequins that has been stained gold, copper, pink, and eggplant. The silvery discs been painted in a layered combo of thick and thin diagonal lines. All we have to say about that is: FIERCE! They remind us of the world's most fabulous red rock outcropping in Sedona.

MAD MEN FOR SCAASI

If you watch "Mad Men" then the style of this dress is quite familiar to you: a strapless floral dress with a wasp waist and bubble skirt. It's the look of Season Three! This is very typical of early 1960s American fashion and promises a woman a curvy silhouette and is ideal for cocktail hour when it really meant putting on a cocktail dress and having cocktails. Times have changed. Arnold Scaasi uses a vibrant purple background on this silk faille dress and further enhances it with an abstract red floral pattern that gathers from the top of the bustier portion down to the red bowed waist. Between the sophisticated floral pattern, sensual silhouette, dramatic back, and jewel-tone colors, how can one go wrong wearing this to a "grown up" event? With runways filled with 1980s and early 1990s references as of late, a dress that is nearly fifty years old looks fresh in the mixed sea of maxi and minimalist fashions that all try so hard to be "edgy." Perhaps, overt femininity is the new edgy!

OLE

Who wears a cape? Then again, who wears a mantilla? (Actually our friend Diane Pernet rocks a pretty high mantilla better than a young lady painted by Goya). What does one get when one mixes a cape with a mantilla?: Apparently this Arnold Scaasi tiered Chantilly lace tango gown with cape! This is what we call a show stopper dress. It's also perfect for the bevy of black tie galas and weddings rapidly approaching in the spring and summer. Have to play dress-up in the Hamptons or St. Barths? Then wear this. And don't negate the cape. Trust us, when the sun goes down, the shoulders get chilly, so this cape is a statement and a nice alternative to the pashmina you have been schlepping all over. The dress can work also strapless and the back is so sexy. This a dress for which vacations are made!

WHO WEARS THE PANTS IN THE FAMILY?

Why YOU do! Especially in this super clever Arnold Scaasi silk jumpsuit from 1963. We took very detailed photos so we want to let the photos do the talking, but if you need some CliffsNotes to understand there is a light lilac strapless jumpsuit with short sleeves plus a one shoulder celadon toga that is belted with a coordinating light lilac belt that makes for this palazzo-legged-friendly-goddess-in-pants-look. This is a sample piece from Mr. Scaasi's archive and the celadon silk jersey and light lilac silk crepe combo are a perfect peak into Spring -- which is just around the corner...we swear.

Tantalizing Turquoise

If you really want to POP this awards season, nothing could be better than this Arnold Scaasi ball gown. The bust is highly architectural with ruching at the waist that expands from a small ripple to large folding waves. There is a full skirt with a dramatic built-in crinoline under the satin turquoise silk satin.
For those of you who are not familiar with Scaasi, he is one of the foremost 20th Century American designers (though, he was born in Canada). Scaasi has designed for political figures such as Jackie Kennedy, Hillary Clinton, Mamie Eisenhower as well as actresses such as Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Deneuve, and Joan Crawford. We guarantee he did not hang any of his beautiful gowns on a WIRE HANGER.
Simply put, this is an amazing gown, in a fantastic color, designed by an American icon.
