IT WAS THE BEST OF TIMES

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way – in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.
-Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities

It was the BEST of times last night as we feted our incredible vintage Moschino collection at Decades with aRose McGowan, Paz de la Huerta, Erica Pelosini, Louis Leeman, Janie Bryant, Mena Suvari, Perrey Reeves, Liza Mae Carlin, original vintage Moschino owner owner Lynda Yost, Jennifer Tilly, Aimee Song, Jeff Snyder, Natalia Bonifacci, and hundreds others who love the FUN in fashion and the contradictions of original Franco Moschino.  Who knew a suit that means business could be so fun?  Charles Dickens wrote elegantly of the high and lows of life and Franco Moschino manipulated the yin and yang in his own spectacular way on the runways of life.

JEREMY SCOTT FOR MOSCHINO

We were very happy to hear that Jeremy Scott is now the new creative director at Moschino. Not only is he a super talented creative genius and a friend, he is one of our favorite rebels of fashion. His whimsy will fit right in with the historic sense of play that Franco Moschino built the house on. Form the archives, when Franco was still designing and poking fun at fashion, comes this LOVE jacket with button trim. We are sure Jeremy Scott will bring his take on Moschino with his new collection showing on February 2014, until then get your hands on some original Moschino.

FASHION SLOGANS

There is nothing wrong with fashion catch phrases plastered over tees, suits, bags, dresses and scarves. From the funny slogans at Henry Holland to the politically and socially charged ones at Westwood, designers have made their point many times with some humor or not. Why then is Heidi Slimane so upset at Colette for selling the funny tees "Ain't Laurent without Yves"? As Slimane is missing the point, humor, Moschino has capitalized on it for decades. And as the brand celebrates its 30th anniversary, we celebrate fashion, humor and Moschino all at once with this 3 piece printed skirt suit. Tomorrow is another day. Better words have never been said.

BAGS FOR SWOONING

The accessory business is serious these days.  I am confident luxury brands have focus groups to determine if newly-designed bag will be a hit with customers months before producing the design en masse.  Being an IT bag isn't what it is cut up to be!  The luxury business does not take its handbags lightly, but thankfully these three bags are functional and festive.  The Moschino bag pokes fun of a Hermes Kelly.  The Charles Jourdan is sleek and sexy, which in my book is something that makes me swoon.  The Salvatore Ferragamo bag has you covered in primary color-blocking to match just about everything in your wardrobe.  I like accessories that make a statement.  These three vintage bags from the 1980s follow my accoutrement advice: be bold, make them swoon, and never let them see you sweat. The Moschino and Ferragamo bags are mini-me sizes, so what they don't have in girth, they certainly deliver in style!

PUNK IS EASY

With all these calamities running around tonight's Costume Institute Gala as to "what to wear" let me remind you that punk is easy...EASY CHIC.  Franco Moschino understood this as evidenced by his slogan tee below which is similar to one of his looks in the above exhibition image from PUNK: Couture to Chaos.  I am not attending this year, so don't look for me on the red carpet.  I deserve a night off and certainly had a big surreal moment last year with my custom Nicole Miller and Schiaparelli blowfish walking stick.  It's been fun commenting in every newspaper from the The New York Times to the London Evening Standard about what the elite set should wear to tonight's gala.  I doubt anyone will be punk enough to wear this Moschino mini tee, but it's really all you need!

CHARMING MOSCHINO

I swear my mother had this belt in her closet and she bought it at Shauna Stein in the Beverly Center circa 1988.  I also swear that I did not usurp this belt out of her closet!  I have a real soft spot for Franco Moschino.  His clothes always made me smile.  Since passing away in 1994, his house has continued to flourish and as I type I am wearing a "whimsical" polo with deck of cards motif trim.  Moschino famously poked fun at Coco Chanel and although his CHANNEL No. 5 television motif tee-shirt resulted in a lawsuit from the House of Chanel, he found other ways to be irreverent by making his own gilt link charm belt in the style of Mademoiselle with the letters of his name dangling across it.   Humour in fashion doesn't occur often enough.  Man, fashion peeps take themselves way too seriously.  So put this belt across your waist and wear it with an actual Chanel jacket and flip everyone the "bird" with a wink in your eye.

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

The whimsical mood that Moschino offers is obvious in both their clothing and accessory design. After the Maison Moschino hotel opened a year ago in Milano, with its design and decoration reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland and her various dream sequences, we couldn't help but be reminded of this eccentric piece from the early 90's from Moschino Cheap and Chic.
This bustier, in wool crêpe with boning, fastened by an invisible zipper in the back right above the faux fur bunny tail. The rabbit ears are made of a soft velvet fabric with boning to bend them whichever way you prefer. We paired it with an Alaia mini skirt but you can wear it with tuxedo pants or, if you dare, with tiny shorts inspired by the bunnies at Hugh Hefner's famed Playboy Club. The embroidery with the first words of the White Rabbit when Alice spots him, is clearly a conversation starter. A clear testimony of the eccentricity of the house of Moschino worn by the right girl with the right attitude. Make this part of your Halloween costume and we guarantee you will feel like Alice in Moschino-land.
