DC Secret Files Podcast Vol. IV: The Untold Legend of the Batman

 WordPressSpotifyInternet ArchiveYouTube🍏podcasts

The fourth episode of our DC SECRET FILES podcast — the show that dares to tackle DC Comics’ greatest creations in encyclopedic form! Each episode, Frank will be joined by a special guest, in this case, podcrasher Captain Entropy, to cover characters and concepts from across DC’s history. Our discussion of the given property will be married to a piece of original art commissioned by DC to spotlight the same. This time around, we chat about 1980’s The Untold Legend of the Batman #1-3, by Len Wein, Jim Aparo, and John Byrne; as well as a host of other talents on the main and supplemental stories. Plus we cover YOUR feedback!

Meanwhile... Mr. Fixit, Illegal Machine, & Diabolu Frank ask, "...and where is The Batman?" While we couldn't omit all references to Nolan or Snyder, we more or less stick to the movie at hand, and keep the talk down to about a third of the, let's be honest, unreasonably long running time of the film. How do Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, and Paul Dano stack up in these iconic roles? Somehow, Andy Serkis' Michael Caine impression doesn't come up. Not much in the way of hot takes, with a disproportionate focus on director Matt Reeves, grunge appropriation and... tattoos?

Meanwhile... Illegal Machine, Mr. Fixit, & Diabolu Frank talk about the four hours of appeasement to a toxic fandom and/or AT&T's opportunistic grift trading false hopes of #RestoreTheSnyderVerse to bump soft HBO Max subscriber numbers in a pandemic. Cards on the table, we all liked both versions of Justice League, but that won't stop the shade or temper the sizzling hot takes. Equal opportunity offense is our stock-in-trade, and business is good. Both sides can eat a big fat di--rector's (un)cut. #Justice4SilasStone

DC Special Podcast: The Joke That Keeps On Killing

Coarse Language: Listener Discretion is Advised

Look for us on iTunes & ShoutEngine or directly download an art-tagged MP3 from the Internet Archive

Meanwhile... Mr. Fixit, Illegal Machine, & Diabolu Frank look at the controversial 1988 Batman: The Killing Joke prestige format one-shot that has gone from one of the most revered works of a new wave of mature readers books to a (mostly) direct-to-video animated film and an albatross around the neck of DC's attempts at outreach to modern women not in refrigerators. While the comic and flick are a touchstone, this is less an individual critique than a debate about the treatment of prominent females in comics. But bro-ier than that sounds. Beyond Alan Moore and Brian Bolland, we also talk Frank Miller, Brian Azzarello, Rafael Albuquerque, and more. We also go broader than Barbara Gordon to other imperiled heroines like Supergirl, Ms. Marvel, Captain Marvel, Cassandra Caine, The Huntress, Bat-Girl, Batwoman, Superwoman, and yes, Sansa Stark. If you're not up to date with Game of Thrones or Orange Is The New Black, this episode may be even more problematic for you than usual.

Illusion On-Demand's Top 20 Villains

According to Wikipedia, "Illusion On-Demand is an American VOD Video On Demand cable TV network focused on science fiction and fantasy programming. Illusion launched nationally in October 2007 with a special Halloween lineup. The regular programming consists of 21 shows and content blocks." I'd never heard of it, but while killing time checking out free programs on my cable box, I stumbled upon a 21 minute program counting down the "network's" top comic book bad guys. The production values were YouTube low, mostly static images (pulled directly off sites like Comic Vine and Wikipedia) with generic screen script and extremely repetitive bland (Creative Commons?) rawk music playing. Anyway, this sort of thing is how I gets me kicks, so here's their(?) picks...
