I'm pretty new to this whole extra casual work environment, but I thought I'd put together some of my favorite tricks for looking put-together while wearing denim to work.

i've been sticking to simple summer dresses on the weekends lately since summer is in full swing.

this is big week for grownup dotty, so i'll be a little sparse until everything settles. 

new job, new apartment, new couch.  all good things.  all this week.

thesis-ing.  wearing all my favorites.  i only ended up wearing twenty-seven pieces, so i went crazy and wore different boots on my last day of the thirty for thirty challenge.  oh, so to sum up the challenge:

• it's winter and i'm always cold.  that means that every outfit involves a lot of pieces.  it's never just a dress and shoes.  (and if it appears that way, it means i'm wearing an entire suit of uniqlo heattech.)  this means that every piece gets layered and worn a lot more. 
• there is always snow, so i should've included more pairs of taller boots.  there were a few times i scaled snow drifts in short boots and escaped without snowy socks only because of my years of preparation and training in cold climates.  
• including a lesser worn item in my thirty can either push me to wear it more (my red wool skirt) or just taunt me for a month (my unworn pink tunic).
• i don't actually shop that much.  i go weeks at a time without buying anything.  now that the ban has been lifted, my first thought was to work on my professional wardrobe since i am graduating in exactly two months.  but seriously, last time i subscribed to the idea of solid color dress shirts and polyester pants, i looked terrible and it was super boring.  the plan this time around is to start with my style and make minor adjustments to meet any requirements, rather than wholeheartedly subscribe to corporate business casual norms.  with that said, i am buying things that i like right now, not what i think will be appropriate in the future.

this was totally inspired by anna of sparkplug minuet who also included a tie-neck blouse in her thirty.  

oh, and thrift stores are flooded with tie-neck numbers like this one.  most of them are white and involve some sort of mock-neck with buttons or lace, but seriously...every single secretary from the 80s is apparently clearing out her closet and there's a fairly good chance that this will not be the last one that comes home with me.  note to all my shirts that cannot tie into bows, you have been warned.

and yeah, that's another skirt as a scarf. 
oh, you want to know how it's done?  just put a piece of clothing that meant to go on feet first on head first.  and then don't ever fix it.  that's it. 
(probs not such a good idea with tights or shoes)

i got this hat on one of my first trips to l.a. with the boy, but i could never wear it when i lived in vegas because it was always too warm for hats.  so i left it with my sister for my niece's costume box, then i saw it there this summer and reclaimed it.  the hat is back!

this is my favorite boy.  he dresses way better than me, carries all my heavy bags, loves peanut butter, and works on awesome things like this.  sometimes he smiles, but only in poorly-lit subway tunnels.
