Salvation - City Hall, Sheffield, UK - 16.03.1990 (Flac)

And another recording sent by Egg_Crisis to share here. HUGE Thank s to him for his never ending generosity.

Cassette(aud,master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Supporting The Mission.
Judging by the first 20 seconds
I must have started recording before I was fully in the concert hall, probably coming back from the toilet.

Setlist:

01 Very Go Round
02 Days Again
03 Tumbleweed
04 She Says
05 To High Heaven
06 All And More
07 She Is An Island
08 Clearing Out The Debris
09 Ravishing
10 Why Lie

Length - 39:01

Salvation - Polytechnic, Leeds, UK - 01.03.1990 (Flac)

Cassette(aud,master,TDK SA90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

The left channel dropped drastically in the left channel for a few seconds near the beginning of the recording as well as most of Ravishing, so I copied from the right channel for those parts.  I'm told that SA90's don't hold up so well over time compared to the more standard D90's.

Supporting The Mission.

Setlist:
01 Very Go Round
02 Days Again
03 Paint it Rose
04 She Says
05 All And More
06 Tumbleweed
07 She's An Island
08 (Clearing Out The) Debris
09 Ravishing
10 Why Lie?

Length - 38:13

Salvation - Duchess Of York, Leeds, UK - 11.05.1989 (Flac)

Another master shared here by Egg_Crisis, a HUGE Thank You to him.

Cassette(aud,master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Support was Riprize. (I didn't tape them.)
Tape flip after Why Lie.

Of the three gigs Salvation played at the Duchess in Dec 88, March 89 and this one, the audience was larger each time.  On this night the place was quite packed.

11 minutes into the gig a stage diver landed on me right at the end of Payola and smashed the tape recorder!  (It's disappointing that you can't hear any crash, it just stops.)  I put the pieces into my pocket.  A few minutes later I needed the toilet and took the opportunity to have a look at how badly damaged the tape recorder was.  Some of the plastic panels had come apart but I was able to clip it all back together and nothing was irreparably broken apart from the door being missing.  I missed 2 and a bit songs and the tape recorder served me well for many more years.

Setlist:
01 Intro
02 Instrumental
03 Paint It Rose
04 Payola
xx MISSING (Pearl Necklace or The Happening)
xx MISSING (a new song)
05 Hunger Daze (start cut)
06 To High Heaven
07 Clearing Out The Debris
08 Bamboo
09 Puppet Master
10 She Is An Island
11 All And More
12 Why Lie
(encore)
13 Blind Among The Flowers
14 Kids In America

Length - 54:51

Tape flip during Bamboo - quality is weird for the rest of the song, but whatever it's doing it stops doing it after a couple of minutes.

08 Stop Looking
09 Eighteen
10 Whole Lotta Love

Length - 51:47

The title Crime Prevention is a guess, it kindof sounds like it but probably isn't.
Tape flip during Whole Lotta Love.

Salvation Setlist:

01 Intro
02 Payola
03 Pearl Necklace
04 Paint It Rose
05 The Happening
06 To High Heaven (Epic 10-minute version)

(encore)
12 Instrumental / Introduce the band
13 Diamond Child
14 The Shining
15 What Do I Get
(encore)
16 Kids In America

Length - 76:24

Tape flip during All & More.  On turning the tape I accidentally pressed FFWD as well as record. I pressed stop and then pressed record again to correct it but a few seconds ran super-slow when played back. I adjusted the speed of that part with Soundforge. It's only about 8 seconds so no big deal.

Salvation - Queen's Hall, Bradford, UK - 09.04.1988 (Flac)

Quality isn't as good as it should be - some records had been added to fill up the tape and they also sounded odd, so I think this has been copied on bad equipment, as well as a not-so-good brand of tape.  Although it's still very listenable the master will likely sound much better, or any other copy made at some other time on different equipment.

01 Puppet Master
02 Diamond Child
03 Hunger Daze ("the new one")
04 Payola
05 The Shining ("arty farty version... seemed like a good idea at the time!")
06 She's An island
07 The Happening
08 Sunshine Superman
09 Pearl Necklace
10 Thunderbird
11 The Answer
12 Blind Among The Flowers
13 Listen To Her Heart

Ghost Dance / Salvation - Anti-Vivisection Benefit Gig, Queen's Hall, Leeds, UK - 22.04.1989 (Flac)

Another  master that Egg_Crisis shares with us. A HUGE Thanks to him.

Egg_Crisis notes:

New Model Army did a free gig outside the Town Hall earlier in the day.  In the evening Salvation and Ghost Dance played a gig at the Queen's Hall and many people must have attended both.

One problem we encountered on reaching the Queen's Hall was that the bar was closed and you could only buy bottles of cola.  Then someone discovered a secret door in the toilets.  The door had no handle but you could get your fingers in a crack in the top right hand corner enough to get the door open.  Once inside, you were in a room below the bar where  the beer barrels were.  I say barrels plural, but there was a single barrel,  There was also a crate full of empty lemonade bottles.  So, you took a bottle and filled it from the barrel - free beer!  You hid the bottle under your jacket and took a discrete sip when nobody was looking.  Then later in the evening to everyone's dismay the barrel was empty.

I've spoken to a couple of people since who I didn't know at the time and they also knew about the secret room.  It appears a lot of people knew about it which explains why the barrel emptied so quickly.

SALVATION

Salvation played a short set, and that's me shouting 'get on with it' at the start.  Sorry for being a twat, I'd had quite a few drinks by this time.
Not long before Ghost Dance started their set Danny came back out to apologise for only playing a short set.

GHOST DANCE

To explain what's going on during Heaven And Beyond : someone climbed high up one of the pillars.  Cue cheers and shouts of "jump!"
There's a brief cut near the start of Down To The Wire caused by the stop button getting bumped, again at the start of Walk In my Shadow, and again near the end of I Will Wait.  The perils of moshing with a tape recorder.

Cassette(aud,master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic)

Salvation / Altered States - Duchess Of York, Leeds, UK - 18.12.1987 - Including Soundchecks (Flac)

Another treat from Egg_Crisis collection! A HUGE Thank You to him for sharing this recording here with us.

Cassette(aud,master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Normally bands soundchecked before they started letting people in (at around 7:30pm if I remember correctly?) but maybe things were running late so they let people in before the soundcheck had happened.  Salvation soundchecked first, then Altered States.  The soundchecks aren't so good quality as I think I was further back in the venue, maybe even in one of the side rooms.

Cassette(aud,unknown gen,TDK D90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Towards the end it sounds like they had to cut their set short for some reason.  Also playing that day were Toy Dolls, Batfish Boys & Psycho Surgeons, but I only have Salvation's set.

Cassette(aud, master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge (normalise slightly quieter left channel, tidy up tape flip etc) > CDWave > split on sector boundaries > flac(6)

I only recorded the final song of Shotgun Brides.  I couldn't identify all the songs in the medley, maybe someone else can identify the others.

This Psycho Surgeons tape isn't the greatest of recordings, but there don't seem to be many bootlegs of them, or if there are I've not encountered them, and since the sad passing of Wild Willi Beckett in 2007 there won't be any more so enjoy this great performance by the Psycho Surgeons, even though it may not be a great recording! The lyrics for all but one of the songs in the tape can be found in this .pdf file... http://www.mattwm2k.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/images/Willi%20Booklet.pdf

There's a cut in track 5 where the stop button got knocked. Tape flip in track 11. Tape flip between track 24 & 25 during audience applause before encore.

I didn't tape any of the other bands that night, but for the record the full lineup of bands was - Another Cuba, Paris In The Fall, [a band who's name I never found out], Vee V V, The Shotgun Brides, Psycho Surgeons, Salvation.

RE-UPLOAD: Salvation - Marquee, Leeds, UK - 02.05.1986 (Flac)

Huge thanks to Egg_Crisis for sharing this Soundboard recording here, complete with some more rarities as bonus tracks.

01 Angel Pain (start missing)
02 Lady Faithe
03 The Puppet Master
04 Shattered Sky
05 The Unicorn
06 Jessica's Crime
07 The Answer
08 Spirit In The Sky
09 Thunderbird
10 The Shining
11 Listen To Her Heart
12 Lean Woman Blues

Total - 51:08

BONUS TRACKS
13 Teenage Kicks (Leeds Royal Park, 14th Feb 1986) (2:34)
14 Jessica's Crime (demo, produced by Wayne Hussey, 1985) (5:29)
15 Sea Of Dreams (unreleased Clash Of Dreams LP, 1984) (4:09)

Marquee was one of the former names of the Duchess Of York until London's Marquee threatened a lawsuit.

Tracks 1-4 were quiet in the left channel, then the levels slowly rose through tracks 5-7.  I don't know if it was always like this or if the tape has deteriorated over the years.  (Side B (tracks 8-12) was fine.)  I sorted out the uneven levels with normalisation.  For that reason you'll maybe notice more hiss in the left channel but this should lessen after a few songs, and it's barely noticeable during the songs anyway.  Maybe I'm over-critical. :)

Cassette (soundboard,low gen-probably 2nd or 3rd gen,TDK D60) > Soundforge(normalise uneven tracks in left channel) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Bonus tracks:

Cassette (unknown gen, probably fairly low) > Adobe Audition(hiss reduction-light setting) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)~

Salvation - Astoria, Leeds, UK - 22.12.1989 (Flac)

Another excellent share by Egg_Crisis.

Cassette(Audience,Master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L&R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

As well as the tape flip there's several cuts where the stop button got moshed into.
Cuts at 36:46(Bamboo), 42.58(Paint It Rose), 44:16(tape flip-Paint It Rose), 48:57 (Ravishing), 59:06&59:37(encore break).

They blew a fuse 3 times right at the start of the gig and it took 10 minutes to fix it, but the tape continued rolling to capture every moment! That's me making a few comments into the mic during that part. *cringe*
A Christmas gig with The Vaynes as support.

Finale
------
Wild Thing/Louie Louie

Drug Free America is just a fragment.  There would have been more but just before the Finale started my 3rd cassette snapped and I knew something special was going to happen so started rewinding the first cassette to record over the already incomplete Drug Free America.  As I was rewinding it the Finale started so I just stopped rewinding and started recording from where it was.  That meant that the 12-minute Finale recorded over the end of Drug Free America and the start of the Psycho Surgeons (and I'd already missed the start of the Surgeons first song in the initial recording).
Diagnosis was either the first or second song, so their set is almost complete.

The Late Henry Henderson...
His real name is Bob Winter, he became a Monster Raving Loony candidate in 1988.
To explain the visual jokes...  Firstly, the guy's made up to look like Frankensteins monster.
The "droopy" comment at 4:43 refers to his microphone which drooped in the mic stand.
He's got various props which he produces at various points, pretty self explanatory.
When he introduces "Richard", it's a head on the end of his left arm which up until this point was hidden under his cloak.
When everyone's "waving" at around 9:40, everyone is putting 2 fingers up at him.
"I couldn't get a full one" - he has an empty beer glass he uses to help do the voice.
"Edwina Currie" - someone throws something at him that resembles curry.
At 13:57 he throws weetabix (he'd intended to hit it with a tennis raquet but someone stole it.)

I was told before the gig that Danny (Salvation) had promised to sing Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now" during their set, but only if he was drunk enough.  Presumably he wasn't drunk enough!

Pink Peg Slax went down very badly, presumably because their music didn't fit in with the other bands that evening, and also maybe some people were all fired up waiting for what might happen in the Grand Finale and didn't think they should have been on so late in the proceedings.  Perhaps they'd have been received differently if they'd have been positioned earlier in the evening.

For the Finale there were members from most of the nights bands on stage, except for Pink Peg Slax who were probably annoyed with the audience's reaction to them and probably left after their set ended, and I don't remember any of Psycho Surgeons being there also.
On vocals Danny (Salvation), Anne Marie (Ghost Dance), Drug Free America singer, and part-way through a guy got up out of the audience, picked up a mic and joined in!  He's the one who sings bits of the Kinks 'You Really Got Me' and it works really well.  I found out later he was the singer of a local band "Purple Eternal".
Also sometime during the evening, either during the Finale or during the Ghost Dance/Salvation bit I remember seeing two guitarists (Ghostdance/Salvation) rocking it on stage with inflatable guitars.
Andrew Eldritch had been hotly tipped to make an appearance at this gig, possibly just for the Finale, but didn't.  Later I was told he would have been there but for the fact that he'd had his wisdom teeth out shortly before and so was unable to attend.

Ghost Dance didn't play a set of their own.  The first band that evening was called Exocet.  I didn't record them.  I may not have even seen them as I don't remember them at all.  Apart from them and the incomplete Drug Free America and the slightly incomplete Psycho Surgeons the evening is complete.

Cassette(aud,master,TDK D90,recorded on Saisho PS 35R with built-in mic) > mp3 256kbps
Transfer done around 7 years ago when I didn't know anything about flac, etc, and I no longer have the tapes. :/  256 is still good though, right?

Salvation - Great Northern Rock Session, 02.11.1987 (Flac)

A the second contribution og Egg_Crisis to the blog today. I already had been asked for more stuff from this band, unfortunately I had nothing worthy of posting, so this one fits as a glove. Again Thanks to Egg_Crisis for sharing this session here on DCR.

Great Northern Rock was a radio show broadcast on various BBC local radio stations in the Yorkshire area, BBC Radio Sheffield, BBC Radio Leeds, BBC Radio Humberside being 3 of them.

It's probably only 1st gen although it sounds a lot worse due to poor radio reception.  Recorded by a friend in York, unless she got it from someone else in which case it's 2nd gen. I received the tape in December'87 so it hadn't had time to go a lot of generations.

There's a weird sound at 2:53 on track 2, 0:57 on track 4, 2:40 of track 5, and 2:08 of track 6 that's present on the original tape, not a processing artifact.  Sounds like maybe the record button was pressed instead of stop at some point before I got it. The right channel was noticeably worse than the left, and normally I'd have thrown the right channel away and just used the left, but the stereo is quite noticeable in parts so I had to keep both.

Dehissed with Adobe Audition (L chan standard setting, R chan High setting) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Salvation - Fulham Greyhound, London - 09.08.1988 (Flac)

I was asked to post some Salvation, so here it is. Quite difficult to find booleg recordings of this band. Their first single was produced by Andrew Eldritch and the second by Wayne Hussey... The sound of the recording is good. The photos are from the actual concert. Thanks to the original uploader.
