RE-UPLOAD: All About Eve - Leeds Polytechnic, Leeds, UK - 18.02.1988 - Plus Interviews and Videos (Flac/Vob)

Excellent post by Egg_Crisis!

Cassette(Audience,2nd gen,WHSmith Super Ferric 60) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L&R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)
Interviews(FM Radio,off-air master,TDK D90)

Before Candytree Julianne says "Did you watch Calendar tonight? That was a bit funny". Calendar is a regional TV show broadcast live from from 6.00-6.30pm on ITV. I've included the video of their appearance as well as a tiny clip of one of the songs from the gig shown on BBC1's regional show "Look North" about 6 weeks later.

Tape flip (on my c60) between Wild Hearted Woman & This Hour, but with a slight overlap so nothing is missing. I always assumed this was a 1st gen because I got it 4 days after the gig from the person who taped it, but I found another bit of repeated audio just before In the Meadow which I removed. Therefore I think they probably recorded this on a c120, then copied it onto a c90, then made my copy from their copy. Perhaps they had a c120 they used for gig recordings, copying then re-using it.

For some reason I didn't go to this gig, I can't remember why, maybe tickets were sold out.

I also included an interview Julianne did on Radio Aire a couple of hours before the gig, and also a Radio 1 interview that has no relevance to this particular gig but I found it while looking for the Radio Aire interview so might as well include it.

Setlist:

01 Intro : What Kind Of Fool
02 Every Angel
03 Candytree
04 Never Promise (Anyone Forever)
05 In The Clouds
06 Flowers In Our Hair
07 Shelter From The Rain
08 Wild Hearted Woman
09 This Hour
10 What Kind Of Fool
11 In The Meadow
12 Paradise
13 Our Summer
14 Every Angel

Length - 53:45

BONUS TRACKS

15 Julianne Interview (Carl Kingston, Radio Aire, Leeds, 1988.02.18) (7:02)
16 Julianne Interview (Backchat, Radio 1, 1988.01.31) (2:29)

I don't know why Look North showed a clip of the gig 6 weeks after it happened.
I saw the the final few moments of the show myself, managing to record the last half second, and a friend managed a little better, getting this 29 sec clip.  I've no idea how much more of the song was shown.

RE-UPLOAD: All About Eve, Balaam & The Angel, Hunter's Club - Rock City, Nottingham, UK - 23.08.1987 (Flac)

Courtesy of Egg_Crisis, all from his master recording, unless where noted.

Cassette(Audience,1st gen*,TDK D90's & Sony HF 90's) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L+R channels) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

AAE - Tape flip between Flowers In Our Hair & Wild Hearted Woman. (The All About Eve part is a new rip with no processing, unlike the one I did before that was uploaded a while ago.)
Balaam - Starts with the last 12 seconds of a song before She Knows, so short I didn't bother splitting it into a separate track. I think it was the short instrumental track that they sometimes started their set with.

RE-UPLOAD: All About Eve - Astoria, London, UK - 27.03.1988 (Flac)

Again Thanks to Egg_Crisis for this recording.

Cassette(Audience,1st gen,EMI XT C90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise uneven L&R channels-see below*) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

*Unfortunately the cassette is a poor quality one, and it'd been re-used quite a few times before being used to put All About Eve on it which hasn't helped, and the quality has deteriorated.
Parts of the left channel kept suddenly dropping off or fading out, then the volume vould increase again suddenly, or fade back in, doing it in different places in the left channel compared to the right. I used mainly the left channel which was the better of the twp, and used parts of the right channel when they were better than the left.

There's a bit of hiss in a few parts where I had to increase the volume for the really quiet parts, but it's quite listenable and only gets really bad for the last 3 minutes of track 9 and the first 3 minutes of track 10 which had faded very badly in both channels so there wasn't a lot I could do with them. I included a 2nd version of the final 2 tracks, dehissing(Adobe Audition-hiss reduction-high) the quiet parts so people can choose which they prefer.

Since the flacs are mono they're half the size that they would usually be.

All About Eve - Demos - 1985 (Flac)

Thanks to roverinexile for sharing this gem here. The sound of the band was a lot less folk orientated at this stage of heir carrer.

These early All About Eve demos come from late 1985 or early 1986.  I've seen them listed as either year.  I suspect they are from late 1985 as they mostly contain tracks that were part of their live set in December 85. Most of the tracks were not released on their early singles.

All About Eve - Warehouse, Leeds - 04.11.1987 (Flac)

Thanks to Egg_Crisis for sharing another of his masters.

Cassette(Master,TDK D90) > wav > Soundforge(normalise) > CDWave(split on sector boundaries) > flac(6)

Tape flip after Our Summer, missing the opening seconds of In The Meadow... I mucked it up, I should have turned it over during the encore break after In The Meadow.

Unlike other gigs from this period they didn't use an intro tape for this gig.  The audience were in a very exuberant mood that night, there's lots of weird stuff being shouted out and I think Julianne was getting annoyed by the end.

During some of this recording there's a weird swishing sound which is presumably caused by tape deterioration, but it only becomes really noticeable During Our Summer & In The Meadow.  The swishing seems to come with each full rotation of the tape, as if one half of the reel has deteriorated more than the other. (If you look at the waveform spectrally you can see it going up and down.)  I've never had a tape do this before, but possibly it's because it's a tape I'd reused, and re-used tapes often don't seem to survive as well as recordings made to a new tape.  Luckily it was a TDK, and it'd only been used once before so it didn't suffer as badly as London Astoria 1988.03.27.

According to www.goony.nl/aae/concerts.htm there's a version of this gig circulating ... but the setlist doesn't match, so I think that the other version is a mislabelled gig.

All About Eve - Croydon Underground - 05.12.1985 & 20.02.1986 (DVD)

The excellence of Egg_Crisis shares continues to amaze me, and you, I suppose. This time he has a request, since the first of the two videos is dubbed with the sound of some demos, if someone has a recording of the actual concert, audience or soundboard, please contact us. With that he can restore the sound so that it's from the actual concert.

VHS(Sony E180 & TDK HS E180, both unknown gen) > LG DVD/VCR combo > DVD-RW disc > TMPGenc DVD author(add chapters & menu,no re-encode) > VIDEO_TS folder

PAL DVD
Menu
Chapters at the start of each track
Video: MPEG2 Video 720x576 (4:3) 25.00fps 6556Kbps
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz stereo 256Kbps

1985.12.05 - Camera on a tripod, fixed position (no zooms), audio for tracks 5,9,10 from soundboard...
The rest of the tracks have new sound dubbed on from demos (except tracks 4 & 8 which might be the single versions).  This video is supposed to be a promotape made by the band.
Why would someone dub new sound on though?  You can hear by the 3 untouched tracks that the sound is perfectly fine, and the dubbed songs aren't a major improvement in sound quality, so why do it?
I have a theory... compare Julianne's vocals on the 3 undubbed tracks with how she sings on the others.  Her singing style seems slightly different.  On the 3 untouched tracks she sounds a bit like Siouxsie.  I'm wondering if, at the start of 1986 she made a conscious attempt to change her singing style, and the only video they had of themselves had to be redubbed when they needed it as promotional material.  That's just my theory though,  I've not heard any of the other 1985 gigs in existence.

I was once told that Underground had the camera so people could watch the bands on a TV in the bar, but I've no idea if this is true.
Ghost Dance played their second ever gig at the Underground on this same night.  I'm not aware of a video of their set existing, not even a rumour of a video existing.
An audience recording supposedly exists of AAE's set that night, I don't have it otherwise I'd have redubbed the correct audio onto this video.  If anyone has the audience recording and wants to contribute (assuming it's not just a tape of this video sountrack) then contact me via Dark Circle Room and I can add the correct audio to the vid.

1986.02.20 - Camera on a tripod, fixed position (no zooms), audio from soundboard.
All original sound thankfully, although there's 3 edits so it's not the complete gig, there's at least 3 songs missing.

A gig for members of The Mission fan club.  I was there although this was taped by a friend.
Some weird stereo at times, the sound gets louder in one channel and quieter in another and vice versa as the recorder is moved around.  I tried normalising sections of it, and I tried mixing both channels to mono but neither were acceptable so I left it as it is.
