Glen Ford and Geraldine Page, are wonderful together, in this believable, sentimental movie. Page, as Evie gives one of her best performances, as she gives a speech about how women "give up" as they grow older waiting to find a husband.
She finally won the Oscar in 1986 for a performance in The Trip to Bountiful. When she won (F. Murray Abraham, upon opening the envelope, exclaimed "I consider this woman the greatest actress in the English language"), she received a standing ovation from the audience. She was surprised by her win and took a while to get to the stage to accept the award because she had taken off her shoes while sitting in the audience.
Her other notable screen roles included Academy Award-nominated performances in Tennessee Williams': Summer and Smoke (1961), Sweet Bird of Youth (1962), You're a Big Boy Now (1966), Pete 'n' Tillie (1972), Woody Allen's Interiors (1978), and The Pope of Greenwich Village (1984).

A Stolen Life(1946). Drama, starring Bette Davis, who also produced, and directed by Curtis Bernhardt. The supporting cast: Glenn Ford, Dane Clark, Walter Brennan, Charles Ruggles and Bruce Bennett. The movie is a remake of a 1939 British film Stolen Life starring Elisabeth Bergner and Michael Redgrave.

They make a quick stop to a small island to pick up Dragon Head lighthouse keeper, Eben Folger. Attracted to Bill, she quickly comes up with a plan to see him again. She talks Eben into posing for her by gifting him a ship in a bottle that he has always wanted.
One day, a heavy fog prevents Kate from leaving, which gives her the perfect opportunity to talk to Bill. Soon, they two have fallen in love, even though Bill, is getting ready to leave for a new job, he promises to return.
Kate has a twin sister Pat, who is also visiting the island, meets Bill on the dock and he mistakes her for Kate. Pat pretends to be her sister and has lunch with Bill. The truth comes out when Kate arrives, but later, learning that Bill is going to Boston, Pat follows him and they marry.
After returning to New York, Kate meets artist Karnock, who seems to have a chip on his shoulder accuses her of being a snob. Soon after, Bill comes to inform Kate that he is going to move to Chile. Kate, realizes that she is still in love with Bill and decides to return to the island where she is suprised to find her sister, Pat there, keeping her distance from her husband Bill.
The twin sisters decide to spend the afternoon together and go sailing, when a storm hits them, causing their boat to crash on a near by reef. Kate tries to save Pat from drowning, but she slips away leaving behind only her wedding ring. Kate, is rescued wearing the ring which leads everyone to believe that she is Pat.
After hearing the news Bill returns from Chile, Kate continues to pretend that she is Pat. When she learns that Bill wants to end the marriage, she begs him for another chance until she learns that Pat had many affairs and unable to face Bill. She makes plans to stay with Freddie, who already knows the truth. Will Kate have enough courage tell Bill her true identity?
The film is very well written romantic story. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful and Bette played both sisters parts perfectly..
Fun Fact:
Because of her constant insistence for better productions to work on, and an overall better atmosphere on set, Jack L. Warner asked Bette Davis to produce the film. It would be the first and only time she would be able to do this.
That same year, she performed in bit parts in the films: The Big Sleep and Humoresque with Joan Crawford.
Knudsen's career never really took off and she performed in many smaller roles in "B" movies. Her last film role was in, Istanbul(1957) with Errol Flynn.
In the 1950s and '60s, Knudsen performed in guest starring roles on several television shows including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Millionaire, Perry Mason and Pete and Gladys.
After performing in an episode of The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet in 1965, Knudsen retired from acting.
Knudsen suffered from crippling arthritis for most of her later years and was cared for by her close friend, actress Jennifer Jones.

The Green Glove(1952).
The Green Glove (1952). Starring: Glenn Ford, Geraldine Brooks and George Macready. Directed by Rudolph Mate. The movie was shot mostly on location in France and Monaco. It was based on actions that took place during Operation Dragoon.
In the village of St. Elizar, Father Goron, is happy to hear the church bells ring for the first time since they were stolen during World War II. As the villagers head towards the church, the priest finds a dead man in the bell tower.
Years earlier, just after the invasion of France, American paratrooper Lt. Michael Blake, hides an abandoned building where he finds German art dealer, Count Paul Rona. When Michael tries to arrest him, Rona bargains for his life, by telling him that the German Army will attack at dawn and he hides the bejeweled green glove, in Michael's backpack. A bomb explodes knocking Michael unconscious, when he comes to he finds that agents Countess and Pierre, have brought him back to their chateau. Michael, has the Countess's son, Robert, inform his Allies about the German's plans for attack. They hear the Germans have retreated and Michael realizes Rona lied to him. Soon after, people carry in Robert's dead body. Michael, insists that they keep his bag with the green glove.
Years later, Michael returns to Paris, hoping to find the green glove and sell it. On the Eiffel Tower, tour guide Chris Kenneth helps him escape from, Conrad Verno. When he sees her later, they spend the night together. Verno's dead body is found in Michael's hotel room. Soon after, Michael leaves for the train station. Faubert, has him followed, as does Rona, who is also searching for the glove. Chris surprises Michael by joining him on the train. They soon realize they are being followed, while on board, Pepe, kills Faubert's detective. Michael travels to the Countess's chateau and blames himself for its ruin. Rona, arrives with four of his men and tells them that they are suspected of the detective's murder. When, police arrive Rona's men make a run for it and Michael falls into one of the hidden rooms of the Countess and Pierre, who have rescued Chris. When Pierre hands Michael's bag back to him, the Countess, who still believes that Robert will return, sees the gauntlet and snaps back to reality.
Back on the road, the rain forces them to take shelter at an inn, where he sees Chris's picture in the newspaper. When he tells her he is going to turn himself in to save her, she locks him her room. The next day, he sends her to Monte Carlo, to find Rona and trick him into following Michael while he returns the gauntlet to the church. She is then to call Faubert, so he can catch Rona in the act of stealing the glove. Things do not go as planned and she is abducted by Pepe while Rona and his men go after Michael, who manages to jump the church wall and ring the bells. Rona, tries to stop him but, he is accidentally shot by his own men. As the priest finds Rona's dead body, Michael replaces the glove.
The settings and scenery of the mountains and the villages are my favorite part of the movie. The scenery of southern France creates a beautiful atmosphere.

Happy Birthday: Glenn Ford!
Glenn Ford (May 1, 1916 – August 30, 2006). After Ford graduated from Santa Monica High School, he began working in small theatre groups. He also acted in West Coast stage companies, before joining Columbia Pictures in 1939. His first major movie part was in the film, Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence (1939). A film about a New York store clerk, along with a hobo, an illegal immigrant who all head for his property in Arizona.
Ford put his film career on hold to volunteer for duty in World War II with the United States Marine Corps. Following military service, Ford's breakthrough role was in the film, Gilda(1946) with Rita Hayworth. He went on to be a leading man opposite her in a total of five films.
His major roles were in thrillers, dramas and action films which include:
A Stolen Life with Bette Davis. A film about Kate Bosworth and her twin sister Patricia, who fall in love with Nantucket lighthouse inspector Bill Emerson. Patricia and Bill are married. Bill goes to Chile Kate and Patricia go sailing. Patricia falls overboard and drowns. Kate's boat capsizes and when she washes ashore, she is believed to be Patricia.
The Secret of Convict Lake with Gene Tierney. The film is about when Jim Canfield, is convicted of a crime he did not commit, escapes a Nevada prison. He leads them to the home of the man who framed him and also committed the crime. He soon falls in love with Marcia, who is the fiance of the man who framed him.
The Big Heat. is the story of Dave Bannion, who is a cop on the trail of a gang he suspects is in control of the police department. Bannion is tipped off after a colleague's suicide and his fellow officers' suspicious silence. When a bomb meant for him kills his wife, Bannion becomes a force of vengeance and justice, helped by the gangster's spurned girlfriend Debbie. As Bannion and Debbie fall further and further into the Gangs trap, they must use any means necessary to get to the truth.
Blackboard Jungle. The story begins when a new English teacher, arrives at a violent, unruly inner-city school and is determined to do his job, despite resistance from both students and faculty.
Framed (1947), film noir directed by Richard Wallace. The B-movie is praised by critics as a wonderful crime thriller despite its low budget. The film begins when Mike Lambert, starts driving a truck to make a living. When his rig brakes stop working in a small town he meets Paula Craig, at the La Paloma Cafe and is quickly drawn into the criminal life of the femme fatale.
Interrupted Melody(1955) with Eleanor Parker, The film chronicles Australian-born opera star Marjorie Lawrence's success, her battle with polio, and her career comeback.
Experiment in Terror with Lee Remick. The story begins when Kelly Sherwood, is terrorized by a man who plans to use her to steal $100,000 from the bank where she works. He threatens to kill her teenage sister Toby, if she tells the police. She contacts F.B.I. agent Ripley.
The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse(1962). Drama, directed by Vincente Minnelli. Was compared unfavorably to the 1921 version, which launched Rudolph Valentino to superstardom. Ford, with many films behind him, was not the unknown that Valentino was when he performed in the 1921 film. Ford, 46 years old, also had the disadvantage of trying to reprise a role that Valentino had played when he was 26. Critics also considered Ford miscast as a Latin lover.
He also performed in many westerns such as: The Fastest Gun Alive, 3:10 to Yuma and Cimarron. Ford's versatility also allowed him to star in a number of popular comedies, such as The Teahouse of the August Moon, Don't Go Near the Water, The Gazebo, Cry for Happy and The Courtship of Eddie's Father.
In 1978, Ford had a supporting role in Superman, as Clark Kent's adopted father, Jonathan Kent. Ford's final scene in the film begins with a subtle indirect reference to Blackboard Jungle - the earlier film's theme song "Rock Around the Clock" is heard on a car radio.
The 2006 movie Superman Returns includes a scene where Ma Kent (played by Eva Marie Saint) stands next to the living room mantel after Superman returns from his quest to find remnants of Krypton. On that mantel is a picture of Pa Kent (as played by Glenn Ford). This "cameo" of sorts was Ford's last screen appearance.

Great On Screen Couples: Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth.
Some people believe that Glenn Ford's relationship with Rita Hayworth (Ginger Rogers cousin), his costar in five films, was more serious than was known publicly.
Rita admits that she was close to her co-star and next-door neighbor Glenn Ford. In an interview published in the New York Times, Hayworth denied she was romantically involved with Ford.
In a interview, Ford said he felt "The film remains so popular because people realize that it's a true story.. and that Rita and I were very much in love. And we remained terribly fond of one another. I guess that electricity came across on screen. I don't know. I really was in love with Rita".
Well.. It really doesn't matter, their on screen chemistry was amazing. Ford's break through role was in, Gilda(1946). He went on to be a leading man opposite her in five films:
Gilda (1946). Film noir. Rita Hayworth, in her signature role as the ultimate femme fatale. The film was noted for cinematographer Rudolph Mate's beautiful photography, costume designer Jean Louis' wardrobe for Hayworth and choreographer Jack Cole's staging of "Put the Blame on Mame" and "Amado Mio", sung by Anita Ellis.
The story is about, gambler Johnny Farrell, who is saved from a gunman by Ballin Mundson, who makes Johnny his right-hand man. But their friendship becomes complicated when Mundson returns home from a trip with his wife Gilda, a woman from John's pass.
Please click to read Gilda (1946) movie review.

The Loves of Carmen(1948). Cast Rita Hayworth as the gypsy Carmen and Glenn Ford as her doomed lover Don José. It was directed by Charles Vidor.
The story is about a wild Gypsy named Carmen, who's adventures as a bandit, lures a soldier to his unhappy ending.
The Lady in Question(1940). Is a remake of the French Gribouille, a Raimu from 1939.
Affair in Trinidad(1952). Is a film produced by Hayworth's Beckworth Corporation. It was to be Hayworth's "comeback" film with a fiery opening number danced to calypso music. Hayworth's singing voice is dubbed by Jo Ann Greer, who later also sang for Rita in the film, Miss Sadie Thompson and the film, Pal Joey.
The film begins when Chris Emery is working as a nightclub singer and dancer. One night after her performance she receives news from Inspector Smythe and Anderson, that her husband Neil was found dead. At first the police believed that Neil committed suicide. Later on in the investigation, they discover that Neil was murdered. Inspector Smythe and Anderson, inform her that Neil's boat was seen outside Fabian's property at the time of his murder. Gilda(1946) Bewitchy!
Gilda(1946). Director: Charles Vidor. Cast:Glenn Ford and Rita Hayworth in her signature role as a femme fatale. The film was noted for cinematographer Rudolph Mate's lush photography, costume designer Jean Louis' wardrobe for Hayworth, and choreographer Jack Coles staging of "Put the Blame on Mame" and "Amado Mio", sung by Anita Ellis.
The film is narrated by Johnny Farrell, the story is about a gambler who just arrived to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Just after he wins playing craps, he is saved from being mugged by Ballin Mundson. Mundson tells him about an illegal casino and warns him not play there. Farrell ignores his advice and cheats at blackjack and is quickly taken to see the casino's owner, Mundson. Farrell talks Mundson into hiring him.
One day, Mundson returns from a trip with a beautiful new wife, Gilda. Unaware that she once had a relationship with Farrell’s, Mundson asks Farrell to keep an eye on her. Farrell looks on in anger, as she flirts with all the men in the casino.
Meanwhile, Mundson is visited by two German's from a secret organization who wants their business dealings put in Mundson's name to hide all their connections. When they decide it is safe to take over, Mundson refuses to change over ownership. The Argentine secret police become interested and government agent Obregon tries to find any information he can from Farrell, but he knows nothing.
Later Mundson, shoots and kills one of the Germans. That same night, Farrell and Gilda confess, not very believably, how much they hate each other, then end up in each others arms. Mundson arrives at that moment, then quickly rushes to a waiting airplane.
Farrell and Obregon watch as the plane explodes shortly after takeoff and crashes into the ocean. Mundson has parachuted to safety, faking his death.
Thinking Mundson is dead, Gilda and Farrell marry. Farrell believes she still in love with Mundson, so he decides to keep away, but has her closely watched. Gilda herself, is unable to escape the love-hate relationship. Obregon tells Farrell that Gilda was never unfaithful to Mundson or to him. Farrell relieved tries to reconcile with her. Will Mundson reappear to claim his wife?
Rita Hayworth is wonderful as Gilda in this noir classic. From her hair-tossing scene to her song "Put the Blame on Mame,". Hayworth, gives a very convincing performance in this romantic triangle.

Soon after, Chapman is found dead. Bannion investigates even though it is not his jurisdiction. After receiving threatening calls to his home, he goes to see Mike Lagana, the mob boss. Lagana is angered by Bannion's accusations.
Bannion's car is blown up and his wife Katie is killed in the explosion. Feeling that the police will not find the murderers, Bannion resigns and goes off on his own to arrest Lagana and Vince Stone.
When Stone attacks a girl in a nightclub, Bannion stands up to him by ordering Stone and a bodyguard out of the club. Stone's girlfriend, Debby Marsh, who tries to get friendly with Bannion, keeps pointing out that she gets her money from a Stone. Marsh states: "I've been rich and I've been poor. Believe me, rich is better." As soon as Debby talks about Bannion's late wife, he rushes her out the door.
Debby was seen with Bannion. When she returns to Stone's apartment, he accuses her of talking to Bannion and throws boiling coffee in her face. Debby is taken to hospital by Police Commissioner Higgins, who was playing poker with Stone at the time. Higgins tells him that he will have to file a report, but Stone reminds the commissioner that he is paid to deal with these type of things.
Debby goes to to Bannion looking for help, he finds her a room at the hotel that he is staying at. Bannion learns that a man called Larry hired a mechanic to set the dynamite in the car that killed his wife. Debby tells him that it was Larry Gordon. Bannion forces Gordon to admit to the bombing. Trouble began because Bertha Duncan, widow of the cop, who had papers that could expose Stone and Lagana. Mrs. Duncan kept them and was collecting blackmail payments from Lagana.

Gordon is murdered by Stone's men. Bannion next goes to see Mrs. Duncan, accusing her of betraying Chapman, causing her death and protecting Lagana and Stone. Cops sent by Lagana make him leave before he is finished talking to her.
Stone kidnaps Bannion's daughter Joyce, who is staying with an aunt and uncle with a police guard nearby. When the guard suddenly leaves, the uncle calls in his army buddies to take over. On the way Brannion meets Lieutenant Wilks, who is now prepared to make a stand against the mob.
Will Stone be arrested for murder and will Lagana and Commissioner Higgins be indicted?
Glenn Ford, gives one of the best performances of his career. But, the film really belongs to bad girl Gloria Grahame. A young Lee Marvin, is perfectly creepy as the man who gets what's coming to him at the end...
FUN FACTS:
When Lee Marvin sees Glenn Ford face to face, the music in the background is "Put the Blame on Mame," a reference to Ford's performance in Gilda (1946).
Bannion's wife Katie is played by Jocelyn Brando, older sister of Marlon.
Jeanette Nolan (December 30, 1911 – June 5, 1998), began her acting career at the Pasadena Playhouse in Pasadena, California, and, while a student at Los Angeles City College, made her radio debut in 1932 in Omar Khayyam, the first transcontinental broadcast from station KHJ.
She made her film debut as Lady Macbeth in Orson Welles's 1948 film Macbeth, based on Shakespeare's play of the same name.
