O americano John Cougar Mellencamp nasceu em 07 de outubro de 1951. Cantor de rock, compositor, ator, músico e pintor, ele já vendeu mais de 40 milhões de álbuns em todo o mundo e acumulou 22 Top 40 hits nos Estados Unidos. Mellencamp é também um dos membros fundadores do Farm Aid, uma organização que começou em 1985 com um concerto em Champaign, Illinois, para aumentar a conscientização sobre a perda da agricultura familiar e para arrecadar fundos para manter as famílias de agricultores em suas terras. Os concertos Farm Aid tem permanecido como um evento anual nos últimos 25 anos, e a partir de 2010 a organização já levantou mais de US$ 37 milhões para promover um sistema forte e resistente de agricultura familiar. Suas maiores influências musicais são Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie e The Rolling Stones.
