À cata de uma opinião do Country Joe McDonald sobre a Joan Baez, para utilizar num texto que há-de escrever um destes dias aqui para o kioske,  acabou por encontrar uma lista do que o  "Em Órbita" entendeu destacar do longínquo, e inesquecível, ano de 1968.

Os olhos caíram-lhe no 13º single que o "Em Órbita" escolheu:

Uma balada maravilhosa que fala de gente envelhecida, de gente marginal que não tem voz num mundo que os ultrapassou, de irreversibilidade terrível que representa a marcha do tempo. Um tema onde uma ternura incontida e um realismo sincero e brando, que conta verdades para não dar achegas aos desenganos.

E se ele disser que os olhos humedeceram, que foi de imediato pôr o "Greatest Hits" (edição portuguesa de 1972) a rodar, sim, porque o "Bookends" vinil foi à praia, pela mão de alguém, e não regressou.

Mas se quiserem olhar a capa, o João Pinheiro de Almeida já tratou disso e até acrescentou:

Esta é a edição comemorativa dos 40 anos de "Bridge Over Troubled Water", um dos melhores álbuns da música popular de expressão anglo-saxónica, do meu ponto de vista.

Além do álbum propriamente dito, a edição inclui um DVD com o histórico programa de TV, "Songs Of America", de 1969, e com novas entrevistas com Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel e outros.

Antes de Simon and Garfunkel, já havia história. Paul Simon e Art Garfunkel começaram como uma espécie de "Everly Brothers dos pobres". Eram Tom & Jerry, como os bonecos animados.

Depois, Paul Simon inventou um nickname e compôs e gravou como Jerry Landis, sem o compaire, mas em 1964 voltou a juntar-se a Art, como Simon and Garfunkel, com a ajuda de Miles Davis.

O duo gravou "Wednesday Morning, 3 AM" (1964), sem grande sucesso, na altura. Paul chateou-se e foi viver para Londres, onde gravou "The Paul Simon Songbook" (1965), também sem grande sucesso, e andou em composições com Bruce Woodley, dos Seekers ("Cloudy", por exemplo).

"The Paul Simon Songbook" contém canções que mais tarde viriam a ser sucesso com a assinatura vocal de Simon and Garfunkel ("I Am A Rock", "Leaves That Are Green", "April Come She Will", por exemplo).

Neste entretém, o produtor Tom Wilson, à revelia do duo, electrificou "The Sounds Of Silence" (plural) e editou a canção como "The Sound Of Silence" (singular), em single (anos mais tarde, Pedro Osório fez o mesmo ao álbum de estreia de José Almada).

E o resto é história....

Concedam-me uma nota pessoal: não sou tão radical como o Paulo, mas tenho Paul Simon como um dos enormes compositores de música popular dos nossos dias, designadamente como letrista.

Para não massacrar muito, deixem-me só citar dois ou três versos de Paul Simon, que ainda hoje estão na ponta dos meus lábios e nas profundezas do meu coração:

- if you need a friend, i'm sailing right behind ("Bridge Over Troubled Water")

- i've got nothing to do today but smile ("The Only Living Boy In New York")

- can a man and a woman live together in peace ("Congratulations")

- i've got a wall around me ("Something So Right")

- some people never say the words i love you ("Something So Right")

Finalmente, "Paul Simon" (1972) é um dos grandes álbuns da história da música popular. Bom, outros também...

7 O'CLOCK NEWS/SILENT NIGHT

Há belíssimas canções de Natal. Esta, gravada por Simon and Garfunkel para o álbum "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme", é das mais belas de entre as belíssimas.

Como Ralph J. Gleason escreveu na contracapa, também esta canção, mesmo passados tantos anos, me faz ainda "calafrios na espinha" e "lágrimas nos olhos". Continua a ser uma das mais "ásperas declarações sobre o nosso Mundo".

Como já tem sido anotado por aqui, este hino de Natal foi gravado no pino do Verão, no dia 22 de Agosto de 1966 (Lenny Bruce morreu no dia 03 de Agosto desse ano).

O locutor que lê as notícias trabalhadas é Charlie O'Donnell, hoje com 76 anos.

The recent fight in the House of Representatives was over the open housing section of the Civil Rights Bill. Brought traditional enemies together but it left the defenders of the measure without the votes of their strongest supporters. President Johnson originally proposed an outright ban covering discrimination by everyone for every type of housing, but it had no chance from the start and everyone in Congress knew it. A compromise was painfully worked out in the House Judiciary Committee.

In Los Angeles today comedian Lenny Bruce died of what was believed to be an overdose of narcotics. Bruce was 42 years old. (por acaso só tinha 40 anos).

Dr. Martin Luther King says he does not intend to cancel plans for an open housing march sunday into the Chicago suburb of Cicero. Cook county sheriff Richard Ogleby asked King to call off the march and the police in Cicero said they would ask the National Guard to be called out if it is held. King, now in Atlanta, Georgia, plans to return to Chicago tuesday.

In Chicago, Richard Speck, accused murderer of nine student nurses, was brought before a grand jury today for indictment. The nurses were found stabbed an strangled in their Chicago apartment.

In Washington the atmosphere was tense today as a special subcommittee of the House committee on un-american activities continued its probe into anti-Vietnam war protests. Demonstrators were forcibly evicted from the hearings when they began chanting anti-war slogans.

Former vice-president Richard Nixon says that unless there is a substantial increase in the present war effort in Vietnam, the U.S. should look forward to five more years of war. In a speech before the Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in New York, Nixon also said opposition to the war in this country is the greatest single weapon working against the U.S.

Lembro-me como se fosse hoje da primeira vez que ouvi este primeiro single espúrio de Simon and Garfunkel no "Em Órbita". Só anos mais tarde ouvi a versão pura.

Historicamente falando, é óbvio que Tom Wilson agiu correctamente ao electrificar o duo acústico. Não fora isso, seria que conheceríamos Simon and Garfunkel hoje em dia?

Musicalmente falando, a versão acústica é um hino à simplicidade.
