Lahti Pride´14

Hello good people!
Another week has passed, it seems that Winter (definetly maybe) caught up with us, which is a nice thing. You can remind me that I said that in march when the snow seems never-ending... :)
Usually the Pride-festivities are organized in the Summer but the city of Lahti makes a nice exception of the "rule"having it in February! Me, Lola Vanilla and (at least some part of) The Finnish Blonde Burlesque Troupe are happy -and pround! to be a part of their ending party on Saturday the 1st of Feb at Tivoli in Lahti-city! So if you are around, come support a good cause and say hello! Information here and they also have a facebook page for the party.
Tomorrow it´s a roadtrip to Turku for a fantastic wedding, I hope ya´ll have a great weekend <3

Pin Up Boys and Gender Rant

A few posts down I talked about gender roles (the spoof video of "Blurred lines" in which the roles were swapped, half-naked men and fully clothed women, to show the sexism in Thicke´s original video) and how we often take somehow for granted that it´s the female role to be objects and the male role to be the "viewer". Yes, yes I´m aware of the fact that we actually have more genders than just these two but let me cut some corners here.
You also, my dear reader, by this time must know that I have absolutely nothing against the naked body (male, female or something other) or that a pair of naked breasts won´t upset me. That´s not the point here. The point is how *it´s done* and how we keep up old, dusty gender roles if we never question them. Norms, those unwritten rules about what is ok behavior and looks. What´s wrong with the old models? you ask. Well, they are a bit unequal, would you not say? They keep up the image of only one kind of masculinity and only one kind of femininity and I dare to say that most of us won´t fit into those categories. And to not-fit-in makes one feel of less value, to feel ugly and to have low self-esteem.
To keep showing women as objects is something that lessens the value of feminine. To use "feminine" words to describe negative things (e.g when someone is a "pussy" or "a twat", not to mention the "bitches", "ho´s" and "sluts") and masculine ones for positive attributes (to "have balls/be ballsy", be "a man" or "dude"). Surely I have been on the subject before but as it never seems to become old (since there´s no change to be seen) I´ll keep yapping ´til you all just tire of me ;)
Feminism does not mean that feminine should be treated with more value than masculine. Feminism does not mean "men-hating lesbians" as one so often hears. I know a lot of men who are feminists. It´s simply because it´s about equality DESPITE gender. We are more than our sex or gender, unfortunately culture and history has gone the way that things OTHER than masculine are often perceived as "less" or "wrong" or silly, stupid, girly, whimsical, soft, emotional, gay or pick-any-given-word-you´ve-heard-to-describe-something-non-masculine.
There are as many ways of being "a man" as there are ways of being "a woman" and everything in between. Not all of us "naturally tend" towards playing with Barbies or truck-toys. I do believe that we are brought up  in a way that we notice a positive re-inforcement when we do something that society deems appropriate behavior for our gender. Most of us do this without even thinking about it. I´m totally fighting the urge to always compliment girls´dresses and try to compliment them on something they´ve done well instead, as well as trying to find something else to say to boys then just asking about how well they did in ice hockey :)  It´s not easy but it is doable. Society´s norms change slowly but one has to believe that at some point, small step by small step, we will get there. As girls has earned the right to wear pants without judgement, boys still are snickered upon if they wear a skirt. I hope this will change, soon.
Ok, rant over! But to pick your brain a bit further: go check out this fantastic site that shows "the feminine in men" here! I will leave you with some pictures of men posing as pin up girls do. I have posted these before but they are just too good NOT to post again ;)
Have a splendid Saturday!

What a wonderful excuse!

The gorgeous Marilyn

OH Bettie <3

Yes, the Holiday season gives the purrfect excuse (if you need one) to look at some lovely seasonal pin up girls! My job is done for the year, it´s time for warm glögg and preparing -yes, you guessed it! lots and lots of FOOD :)
But before that there will be the birthday party of our own mr. Frank Doggenstein tonight! Let me tell you it will be an evening full of surprises .... I´m quite desperate that I´ve thrown away all of my punk-era clothes (probably grown out of them, too) now that the theme of tonight is "PUNX NOT DEAD!". I have to see what I can manage to pull together, I might even surprise myself! Have a good Friday folks!

Sailorettes at Porispere 2012

Thank you everyone who made last weekend at Porispere so fun! Me and Sandy had a blast, - some sore feet for sure but that comes with the territory.
Friday was music-wise more up my alley with Marky Ramone and Turbonegro but I was positively surprised my Amorphis on Saturday. Fast metal music has never been my thing, more into the hard core (Helmet, Unsane, Crowbar...) and even found a Henry Rollins-look-a-like strolling around :) Also noticed some cute mohawks, corsets that must have been held up by the Holy Ghost (or tape) and just a pretty cool ambience of a summer festival. We had our little rum kiosk just by the main stage and Lord fatty kept us entertained in between the sets on stage, very cool.

As usual, there was a lot going on at the same time so hope some of you found your way to Ship Ahoy! at Tampere where my girl Pepper Sparkles among others (The Magician Christopher Wonder! Nooo! I missed it!) were performing. Next thing coming up is the Velvet Tea Room at Wäiski (Hellsinki) the 25th of August, come see us there! And if you are from Pori keep your eyes peeled for some burlesque action this Fall! I´ll post further info here as soon as I get it. I have one more week of holidays before I´ll start my new job... looking forward to teenage riot again :)
Have a good start of the week everyone!!!

Pin Up´s

Hello again!

I´m in the middle of packing and putting things together, this time I´m off to Helsinki for two days with my partner to spend some well-deserved "two-time"! We have booked a hotel and plan to go to see Helsingin Ylioppilasteatteri´s summer-play at Mustikkamaa tonight...unless it´s raining cats & dogs. Check out tickets and shows here. Tomorrow off to Forum Box gallery -since I missed the opening of the show "Art Is So Gay" we´re going to see that. There will be 40 artists´ display of art (inspired) of sexuality and gender, amongst them my friends Tapani Kokko, Reima Juhani Hirvonen, Marko Suomi and Petra Innanen. That info one finds here. So if you re in Helsinki in the near future go check these out!!! Other than that there will be some second-hand shopping and hopefully a pedicure and of course tomorrow some drinks with good friends. Hooyah.

Anyhoo, a lot of people ask me what got me started in burlesque, the "how"-question. Truth be told, I´m not really sure. I know how the kickball went: lessons with Bettie, but what got me interested to look into burlesque remains a bit of a mystery even to myself. What I do know there is some blame in pin up-girls :) There was a point when I realized that my home is starting to overflow with all kinds of pin up-things, from calendars, pictures and statuettes to matchboxes and soap. I bought them and soon enough I started getting them as gifts from my well-observing friends. There is just something very wonderful about those old images. The innocence, the cheesecake, the eroticism has always been very appealing to me. And yes, I know that the paintings are perfected images of he models (maybe you have seen the photos of some original models? If not, you can see them e.g here ) but they still intrigue me. I haven´t got a favorite artist, there are many, but I seem to end up with a lot of Gil Elvgren-stuff. And of course, I mostly use redheaded girls when posting something ;)
Thought I would cheer your Sunday up with a couple of pretty girls, so here you go!

Photoshoot with Kaylin

I did a photoshoot with the wonderful, funny and very talented Kaylin Idora while she was in Finland during the Helsinki Burlesque Festival in Febuary. I got the first picture from her today and thought I´d share it with you. Have a great Thursday! <3

Ahoy!

Last night,in the midst of a *very* cold season, me, Sandy and Milova were working as "resident pin up girls" at the Grand Opening of Navy Jerry´s Rum Bar in town. If you like tiki-style, 50´s sailors and just a good, relaxed ambience this is your place! You should check out their facebook site here. The lads were strapping, the ladies were sizzling and the drinks were delish! Try the mango margharita, I dare you! Or anything with the Sailor Jerry´s rum, if for nothing else so the cool etiquette :) I think I have found my new fave hangout!
Other than that it´s been the same old manic panic-y running around, trying to get dis´n´dat done...Tomorrow we have the first rehearsals with the crew for the Vagina monologues, looking forward to meeting all the Ladies!

Me & Sandy, ready for boarding!

Men-up, gear up!

It´s been a really looong day! Lots to do at work but the day ended in a really nice thing: a meeting at our new rehearsing studio! There´s The Itty Bitty Tease Cabaret, us Dizzies, a poledance group called Lumea and Bollywood-dancer Katri who all rented a space together! I think it will work out really good; a lot of creative, crazy people sharing and practicing - and even the idea of learning from eachother came up tonight <3

The other thing that made me smile today (well, I also got some workout done AND sushi, so xtra bonus there) were these manly pin-up´s aka "men-up´s" that have been cirkulating Facebook. The photographer Rion Sabean quite nailed it down to the facial expressions and extended toes :)
Check it out, I´m sure you´ll enjoy them as much as I have!

PinUp´s and beefcakes

I´ve been lying at home, sick with a cold and sinuses aching for days now so you can imagine the pleasure when I opened my e-mail and found these pictures! They were taken a few weeks back by the PinUpHelsinki-team ( Mentioned here ) and turned out fabulous!!! Not going to post *all* of them yet, have to have something to look forward to ;)
Really nice to see oneself looking pretty, since well- the last days "pretty" hasn´t been used in other contexts than "pretty awful cough" or "pretty bad fever". So thank you again Fiona, Miia and Saara!!!! <3

I hope I get all my juju back before the weekend since there´s a bachlorette-party of a dear friend coming up and also because I am a bit bored. As much as I love True Blood - watching season 4 in one sitting really ain´t that good for ya ...I´m driving my baby up the walls!

On that note I guess I have to post my new fave Ware here as well - enjoy!

Manic Monday

My Monday just got a lot better when I got this pic from Saara! We did our first pictures with the Dizzies a while back and took the opportunity to have some single shots as well. Thanks Saara once again and cheers to my girl Pepper for lending the sailor hat <3

Other than that this Monday has been...well, I guess the best way to summarize it is manic. It started with a burning bus and it´s been raining *all* day long. Autumn is here, folks. No way to to escape that now! I love this time of the year...the smells, the coolness...and this season I even got a pair of new glittery Hunter-boots to wear ;)
