Popular success eluded Graham Bond but his influence on the creation of British Rock was subtle but profound. Brian Auger, Jon Lord and Keith Emerson are just some who claimed to be influenced by his aggressive organ playing.
Graham Bond was born in October 1937 and dumped in an orphanage. Adopted by caring parents, his love for music received great support with the hope he would become a concert pianist but instead he fell in love with Jazz and the sound of Charlie Parker.
Graham Bond died in May of 1974 and it seemed the world of music forgot about one of the most interesting and legendary artists to come out of the early 60's music scene. Graham was multi-talented, mastering the alto sax, piano and the organ. His vocals and phrasing are truely one of a kind. Graham experimented with various forms of R & B but these particular albums are totally spiritual and mystical.
Holy Magick was his strangest album, recorded at the peak of his interest in magick and Crowley, this was also a time when the man was already deteriorating under the influence of heavy drug use. It remains certainly one of the most original albums ever recorded. Long lost into obscurity, here is your chance to listen to it.
Bond's demise was more tragic than most: he developed serious drug
and alcohol problems and an obsession with the occult, he also told anyone who would
listen that he was the son of Aleister Crowley. He committed
suicide by throwing himself into the path of a London underground train
in 1974.
