Kabbalah: A Neurocognitive Approach to Mystical Experiences by Arzy Shahar and Moshe Idel (PDF)

In this original study, Moshe Idel, an eminent scholar of Jewish mysticism and thought, and the cognitive neuroscientist and neurologist Shahar Arzy combine their considerable expertise to explore the mysteries of the Kabbalah from an entirely new perspective: that of the human brain. In lieu of the theological, sociological, and psychoanalytic approaches that have generally dominated the study of ecstatic mystical experiences, the authors endeavor to decode the brain mechanisms underlying these phenomena. Arzy and Idel analyze first-person descriptions to explore the Kabbalistic techniques employed by most prominent Jewish mystics to effect bodily reduplications, dissociations, and other phenomena, and compare them with recent neurological observations and modern-day laboratory experiments. The resultant study offers readers a scientific, more brain-based understanding of how ecstatic Kabbalists achieved their most precious mystical experiences. The study further demonstrates how these Kabbalists have long functioned as pioneering investigators of the human self.

Kether : The Crown

Ain becomes Ain Soph, and even further becomes Ain Soph Aur ; which then by contraction (Which is known as Tizimtzum according the the Zohar) concentrated itself into the central formless point-Kether translates as Crown, which is the first sephirah on the tree of life. In Luranic Kabbalah, the explanation of Tizimtzum is a process of creation by God “contracting” his Ain Soph Aur in order to allow a “conceptual space” in which finite and independent realms could exist.

Kether is the one, whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere. Kether is the Monad which is a term used by Neo-Platonists to signify the One. Kether’s Egyptian equivalent is Ptah, the creator of the cosmic egg or Amun-Ra the king of the gods. The Greek equivalent is Zeus and Roman Jupiter, the lord of heaven. In Hinduism Kether is Brahma the creator aspect, from whom sprung the seven Prajapati that correlate with the last 7 Sephirot. It is the root of all things and the ultimate unit of consciousness, as a metaphysical point and centre of spiritual phenomena. This seperah is unextended and indivisible and is the prototype of everything spiritual and everything else in the cosmos. In a simple sense, It is the essence of being, the essence of Spirit coming into Matter, and the highest attribute of God.

Chokmah : Wisdom

Chokmah means wisdom and it is the second seperah on the tree of life. In Taoism, the active\positive Yang would correspond to this sphere. Chokmah is considered to be known as the “Abba”, the great father, because it is the emanation of expansive masculine energy. The masculine virile force of Chokmah is the impulse of manifestion and thus is prior to manifesting itself. Kether is the essence of being and Chokmah is the emanating influence of pure being rather than a thing in itself. Chokmah is concerned with the inflow of cosmic energy. It is formless and the pure impulse of dynamic creation; and being formless the creation it gives is the emanation of every form. In Genesis 1:1 it states: In the beginning(Be'Reshit in Hebrew) Elohim created.. The word Be'Reshit is the primitive nature of creativity that establishes Ain Soph as the unifying guidance of Kether in unity with its radiant wisdom nature that is Chokmah.

The archangel attributed to Chokmah is Raziel(the secret of God), its angelic host is Auphanium (Wheels). Microcosmically, Chokmah corresponds with the left logical male side of the brain. In Jungain psychology, it can be the sphere of the Animus which is the masculine archetype of ones personality. The consious thinking mind is analytical thus making Chokmah a correspondence of the conscious mind. The Qabalistic part of the soul is the Chiah. The Chiah is pure awareness and It is raw consciousness. The Chiah’s function is the spiritual will as the true Will uncorrupted by addictive habits, attachments, and base desires. The true Will is independent from ordinary material cares. The lower will comprises of ordinary mundane cares, the will and fulfillment that never lasts. The lower will is the will of your personality tastes. The true Will is what you incarnated here to do and you keep coming back to earth till you get it right. Chokmah’s astrological correspondence is the Zodiac itself. Your natal chart is an excellent tool to know yourself.

Binah : Understanding

Chokmah is a reflection of Kether and with Chokmah’s dynamic nature came Binah, the third seperah simultaneously. The Sephiroth are states not places, These two sates of being where born at the same time, because Chokmah is the impulse prior to manifestion and Binah is the manifestion. Chokmah represents the male\active and Binah is the feminine\passive. This is dealing with the positive and negative, force(Chokmah) and form (Binah). Chokmah is the bringer of form and Binah is the giver of form. In the Tao, Binah can represent the Ying energy. A Hindu could look at Binah as Shakti and her consort Shiva as Chokmah. This seperah is considered the great Imma which is mother in Hebrew. The gods Kronos, Saturn, and goddess Kali are very similar and this ties with the Saturnian archetype. One can understand the tree of life well with the archetypes of various gods, Greek in particular, and that’s what the Hermetic Qabalist does.

The energy of Binah is linked with Saturn. After all Binah’s planet in Assiah(material world) is Saturn. Astrologicallly Saturn is the planet of time, space, limitations, stability, responsibility, etc and with Saturn brings much understanding, but only with time and patience. There is much more on Saturn, but if Saturn spoke, it would say “what you sow, you reap”. With polarity, you grow and understand after going through some bad times as well. The Anima in Jungian terms is the feminine archetype of ones personality. In psychology, this seperah has to do with the subconsious and right side of the brain. Staying quiet and listening to your neshamah(intuition) with meditation is one way to keep your conscious mind quiet. With wisdom(Chokmah), one prays and to attain understanding(Binah) is to meditate and get the answer. Binah and Chokmah correspond with the third eye chakra. With an active third eye, both hemispheres of the brain function in unison.

The Supernal triad is complete; the triangle is a symbol of manifestion to which creation manifests. Genesis 1:2 metaphorically sums up Binah and Chokmah: the Ruach Elohim is the summation of the Supernal triad. The 6 days of creation have to do with the rest of the Sephiroth.

Da'at : Knowledge

Da'at or Daath is not considered a seperah. Some have called it the shadowy seperah or the false seperah. Daath is important to the tree though. It is rather a state of Gnosis or knowing. Da'at means knowledge in Hebrew. Chokmah is the masculine father and Binah is the feminine mother(see Chokmah and Binah). Daath is like the son, the end result, so the other realms can appear. Daath is the bridge to the real world and it is located in the abyss.

What lies after the Supernal triad between the next triad(Briah) is the abyss. The Supernal triad is the real and pure triad. The next triad of Briah or etheric triad is the mere reflection of the Supernal and then the third triad (astral triad) is a dense reflection of the etheric:eventually the physical state of matter is manifested. The abyss works kind of like a mirror. Think of it like this, in your bathroom the mirror is the abyss and you are looking through the mirror and you see the illusionary reflection of the real you.

Daath is shadowy and hidden. According to the Hebrew kabbalists, people who remain selfish cannot see it and for them Daath seems “hidden”. So then, egotism is like a blockage to the source and higher consciousness. Daath’s virtue is detachment. Dion Fortune writes “Perfection of Justice and the application of the Virtues untainted by considerations of the personality.” The virtue of Detachment indicates what is required to unify our mundane selves with our spiritual selves. Daath operates in two levels: the lower is the Daath(knowledge) you’ve attained with the lower seperoit which are the emotional and intellectual ones(Chesed to Yesod) used in the right action. The higher level is the Daath of Kether the Gnosis\enlightenment you’ve attained from Kether.

Chesed : Mercy

Chesed is the fourth sephirah of the tree of life. It is directly below Chokmah and as we see the yellow shadow line connects to Daath. Chesed is the expansive tendency of energy and creative force of the tree. This Sephirah is the symbolic first day of creation in the Bible, when light came into being. Its attributes are limitless love and energetic expansion. Chesed is the first of the emotive attributes within creation and it is associated in the soul with the desire to embrace all creation and bestow upon its goodness. As the expansive force which impels the soul to connect with outer reality, chesed inspires, and thus implicitly accompanies, all the other expressions of the emotive force which succeed it in the soul(Gal Einai, 2014). The alternate name of this Sephirah is Gedulah, which means greatness and magnificence. Chesed means mercy and love. Its correspondence in the microcosm is our memory in the intellectual Ruach. Chesed’s virtue is obedience, but not obedience to slavery of course. It has to do with obedience to your kindness: we sacrifice much of our independence and egotism for sharing in the service of our social life. With egotism in general how are you going to cross the abyss, enter into higher awareness, and access the God within you? Chesed’s vices are bigotry, hypocrisy, gluttony, and tyranny. Its planet in the physical is Jupiter, astrologically it is the planet of prosperity, optimism, luck, generosity, spirituality, high thinking, philosophy, faith, and more. Thus Jupiter belongs to Chesed, another key for crossing the abyss is faith and belief you are going to succeed its going through risks that are hard to take.

Geburah : Severity

Geburah or Gevurah is the 5th Sephirah on the tree of life and Geburah means severity, harsh, or judgement. Geburah is the 2nd day of creation with the constructive tendency of energy. The fourth sphere of Chesed is the expansive tendency of energy and Geburah is contractive. Gevurah is associated with the soul with the power to restrain ones innate urge to bestow goodness upon others, when the recipient of that good is judged to be unworthy and liable to misuse it. As the force which measures and assesses the worthiness of creation, gevurah is also referred to in the Kabbalah as midat hadin (“the attribute of judgment ”). It is the restraining might of gevurah which allows one to overcome his enemies, be they from without or from within (his evil inclination). Chesed and Gevurah act together to create an inner balance in the souls approach to the outside world(Gal Einai, 2014). Just like having to balance your masculine and feminine energy of Chokmah and Binah, you have to balance Chesed and Geburah. Geburah alone would create no peace and no kindness and Chesed alone would create pacifism ready to be walked on all the time. Geburah has to do with justice and its harsh masculine force has to be balanced with the feminine kindness. Someone balancing these attributes would defend themselves and their family from unjustified harm, for example. Within ones own self Geburah is the discipline, control, breaking habit, and standing up for ones self. Geburah virtue is justice and courage and its vice is cruelty and destruction. With the psyche, Geburah is the Will in Ruach. Its planet in the physical realm is Mars, the planet of energy, action, desire and more.

Tiphareth : Beauty

Tipareth is the 6th Sephirah and is associated with the 3rd day of creation. Tipareth’s attributes are beauty and harmonic equilibrium. This Sephirah expresses the cohesive energy: causation of unification. Tipareth is the continuous spectrum reconciling the expansive energy of Chesed and the contractive Geburah. Tipareth is the sun of the entire tree and it is right on the middle of it. It circulates the energy of the higher and lower Sephiroth as indicated as the Hexagram. Tipareth is where the Divine (Kether)sacrifices itself though Geburah the destroyer in order to enter into incarnation, thus the even more dense plane known as the Astral is manifested. The ethical or etheric triangle is complete and has no choice but to reflect itself in a slower vibration bringing the Astral triangle. Briah(ethical) needs a plane for formation of its creative tendencies which is Yetzirah(Astral). So then all the incarnated Gods that are sacrificed for the greater, the solar deities, and illuminating gods are placed in this spehere such as the solar logos of Jesus Christ, the solar deity Ra, Apollo, Adonis, Iaccus, Dionysus, Orpheus, and Hare Krishna, because Hare is a divine incarnation of whom spirit and matter were in complete equilibrium.

Considering this microcosmically, with the psyche it is the imagination of Ruach. In Transcendental Psychology, the mystic sacrifices his personality for attaining contact with his Soul in Tipareth. It is the heart center or higher self\higher genius center also known by some as The Holy Guardian Angel. Kether is the Divine Spark, the monad of consciousness rather than consciousness itself, Daath is the bridge to higher awareness, and Tipareth is the individual pure consciousness itself. The four lower Sephiroth below Tipareth are the personality and the lower self. Tipareth and those above it are the individuality or higher self and lastly with Kether being the Divine Spark and the God incarnation.
This Sephirah corresponds with the Anahata chakra. We also see symbolism of this chakra with the Hexagram. The chakra where the spiritual and material meet and like Tipareth it is usually the highest the average Joe has attained.

Netzach : Victory

Netzach is the seventh Sephirah corresponding to the forth day of creation. Netzach is a Sephirah of polarity like Chokmah, Binah, Chesed, and Geburah. This is force on a lower arch and this stage is where the light of Tipareth is broken up as a prism into many rayed manifestations ,but not fully individualized. So then, we really have forces not just force. The two Sephiroth Netzach and Hod are two levels of concrete force into form. In this level we are in a more illusionary projection of the higher states. This is the world of Yetzirah: Netzach is the male dynamic impulse, the bringer of formation; Yetzirah in its whole is the blueprint formation of what we see in the physical. The Astral is Spirit on a lower arch as with Matter being Astral on a lower arch. In the kabbalistic world of Yetzirah everything is thought forms.

In the microcosm, Netzach is our instincts and the emotions that give rise too. It represents the instinctive, emotional side of human nature. This is the lower Ruach, the basic functions of the psyche. It is also the desire in Ruach. The basic desires we would have and the emotional motivations of it. It is also about being attracted towards others and identifying with others: relationships in all forms.

Netzach’s virtues are unselfishness and vices are selfish love and lust. Its planet in the physical is Venus and it makes sense, because astrologically Venus is the planet of love, art, desire, emotion, friendships, and more. In mythology Venus is the Roman Goddess of love with the Greek name of Aphrodite. Your Venus describes what you love, how you love, and whom you love.

Hod : Glory

Hod is the eighth Sephirah corresponding to the fifth day of creation. As was said in the Netzach post, both Netzach and Hod are concrete force into form. Netzach being the male dynamic impulse and giver of concrete formation and Hod the female bringer of concrete form. The force of Netzach are free moving with fluidity and ever changing shapes. Hod is the stage of concentration where the energy is temporarily controlled and molded into forms. These two Sephiroth on the macrocosm are the force and form of the Astral.

Hod is associated with the soul in the power to continually advance, with the determination and perseverance born of deep inner commitment toward the realization of ones life goals. The acknowledgement of a supreme purpose in life, and the total submission of self which it inspires, serve to endow the source of one’s inspiration with an aura of splendor and majesty. Hence the word Hod connotes both “acknowledgement” and “splendor,” in the sense of an aura like “reverberation” (hed) of light (Gal Einai, 2014). With the soul or psyche, it is the intellect or reason in Ruach. It is the intellectual side of human nature as with Netzach being the instinctive and emotional nature in Ruach. You have to balance these two Sephiroth to be aligned with your inner scientist, inner artist, and the attributes of Hod and Netzach. Its planet is Mercury, therefore the gods Mercury, Hermes, Thoth, and many others can be placed here. Astrologically Mercury is the communication, intellect, language, etc planetary intelligence. In your natal chart your mercury determines how you use these. Hod’s virtues are truthfulness and vices are falsehood, dishonesty, and mental rigidity.

Hod and Netzach correspond to the solar plexus chakra. Even though the heart center of Tipareth plays a role in the solar plexus. Hod and Netzach are more in correspondence with this chakra due to the energies of this chakra of willpower, emotional drives, motivation, personality, self esteem, learning, and ego.

Yesod : Foundation

Yesod is the ninth Sephirah of the tree of life completing the triad of Yetzirah corresponding to the sixth day of creation. This stage is the integration point of energy and its contexts. The ninth stage of Yesod is where the emanations of the entire tree of life are adopted through the cosmic life force energy. The Sephiroth of the tree are charged with the life force of Yesod and with this, the tree has the power to influence Malkuth, the sensual and physical world that we experience. The life energy of Yesod linking the nature of mind and matter is known as the Akasha in the East, or the Astral Light in western esotericism. Everything that has form in the physical is evolved out of the Astral Light.

Yesod is associated with the Soul with the power to contact, and communicate with the outer reality (represented by the Sephirah of malkuth). The foundation (Yesod in Hebrew) of a building is its “grounding,” its Union with the earth (Malkuth)(Gal Einai, 2014). This Sephirah corresponds to the reproductive organ in the symbolism of the human body. The Nephesh: Animal Soul is placed on this seperah. The Nephesh is the part of the soul\mind that deals with sex drives, apatite, and survival. Its the animal nature of man that we share with the animal kingdom. Its planet in the physical world is the Moon: all Lunar deities can identify with Yesod. The lunar cycles and fazes play an important role on earth with tides and physiological functions of plants and animals. Yesod’s virtue is independence and vice is idleness.

Yesod equates with the sacral chakra, the chakra of sexual energy and creativity. The Astral Light is built from the same electro-magnetic current that runs through each person’s Etheric body. Its magnetisism is the dynamo of sexual energy also known as the Kundalini.

Malkuth : Kingdom

Malkuth is the last Sephirah on the tree of life. In the symbolic book of the bible, God rested on the 7th day: the day corresponding to Malkuth. This Sephirah is the final stage of complete manifestion, where the energy emanating through all upper Sephiroth rest. This is the world of Assiah, the plane of action, which is the physical world. Malkuth is the world of the four elements and matter in its entirety. The four colors are symbolic of the four elements that can also be described as the four states of matter: Solid(Earth), Gas(Air), Liquid(Water), and Plasma(Fire). The forms of Yetzirah are manifested in action in Malkuth bringing all forms we see in nature.

Malkuth is associated with the soul in the power of self expression, the power to express ones thoughts and emotions towards others. The soul, in its meditation of Divinity, can only perceive and ascend to the higher Sephiroth through the “pane” and portal of Malkuth. “This is the gate to God, the righteous shall enter through it” (Pslams 118:20) (Gal Einai, 2014). Spirituality is about revealing non empirical phenomena and the Qabbalists feel and know the spiritual worlds while still in their physical body. Qabala is a certain practice of spirituality.

Its vices are inertia, avarice, and its virtue is discrimination. This is not bigotry behavior but discrimination in the sense of letting go. Sacrificing the lesser for the greater. The planet assigned to Malkuth is the Earth. All nature and Earth deities can be placed here.

The root chakra corresponds to this spehere. It is the Earth chakra for grounding and Malkuth is placed between the feet of the Divine man. The Qabalistic name for the Divine man is Adam Kadmon with the feet grounded in the Earth and head in the heavens.

Stephen Skinner & David Rankine ::: Climbing The Tree Of Life (PDF)

Qabalah, or Kabballah or whichever way you choose to spell it continued to be a painful experience for me until I bought and read this book. Rankine's take on it shows that he has done his research, but not only through books and journals, through hard work in the system itself.

The book gives all the theory you could ever hope for. It gives practical examples and exercises and it gives insights that I could only vaguely glimpse in other books on the subject.

No doubt that there will be some who struggled through Mystical Qabalah by Dion Fortune and other books of that era on the subject of Western Mystery Qabalah who will pick up this book and scratch their heads in disbelief. This book is no-nonsense, no-fluff, ultra-practical, ultra-readable, ultra-excellent.

The author has been a practising magickian for many years and through the material made available in this book, I have no doubt that he must also be an excellent teacher.

If you have an interest in magickal qabalah you can do no wrong purchasing this book. It will in time, I believe, replace most books on the subject available today. No doubt it will ruffle some feathers with new informed and thought through takes on the Middle Pillar and other such rituals, but it makes perfect sense and gives perfect well thought through reasons for doing so.

Part of me felt like I should keep the knowledge of this book to myself. It is a real insight into the mysteries, but this book should be shared. You will save yourself years of struggle and gain great insights if you work through the exercises and visualisations in this book.

The Tree of Life Projected in the Third Dimension by Andrew Catero and Darcy Küntz

Copyright © 1996 by Andrew Catero and Darcy Küntz

The Tree of Life is a religious and geometrical glyph of the Universe. The Tree is described in several texts such as the Sepher Yetzirah1 and Sepher Bahir.2 The Tree was the result of the thirty-two Paths of Wisdom which relate to the number of times that God’s name ALHIM (El ohim) was mentioned in the first chapter of Genesis. The Kabbalists formed this concept about God and the creation of the Universe from their research. They did not state the concept of God as fact, but rather they understood that one cannot truly prove the mysteries of life. Through combining elements of religion and mathematics, they formulated and developed this path. A path which uses meditation and magic to apply Kabbalistic concepts and techniques as a aid to knowing oneself and understanding the laws and forces of the Universe.

The Tree of Life is formed from ten Sephiroth or spheres and twenty-two Paths or Foundation letters. The twenty-two Paths are the letters of the Hebrew alphabet and the ten Sephiroth are the points which connect the Paths. The twenty-two Hebrew letters are divided into the three Mother letters, the seven Double letters and the twelve Elemental or Single letters. The letter arrangements express several concepts of equilibrium. Each Sephiroth and Path expresses a religious principle and a number.

The Hebrew letters (Mother, Double, and the Elemental letters)3

Aryeh Kaplan suggests, “If we draw ten points in three columns in the simplest manner, we see that they are automatically linked by 22 lines. Of these, three arc horizontal, seven are vertical, and twelve are diagonal.”4 In other words, the three Mother letters form the three horizontal paths in the Tree of Life. The seven Double letters form the seven vertical paths and the twelve Elemental letters form The the twelve diagonal paths.

The three Mother letters conceptualize the triune nature of God and form an equilibrious triangle. The Mother letters also symbolize the three Pillars of the Tree. The Middle Pillar represents the Pillar of Mildness (or the personal self) with the two outer Pillars being the Pillar of Mercy (right) and the Pillar of Severity (left). These two Outer Pillars are also seen as positive (active) and negative (passive) forces of nature. The seven Double letters have two possible sounds creating opposition. The Double letters model equilibrium with six spheres forming a circle around one sphere. The outer six spheres central points are equidistant from the one sphere’s centre point. The twelve Elemental letters have only one sound with no opposites. The last principle of equilibrium is to enclose a sphere three-dimensionally using other equally sized spheres. It takes twelve spheres to enclose one.

In the Sepher Yetzirah we read in Chapter 1: Section 4, “Ten Sefirot of Nothingness, ten and not nine, ten and not eleven. Understand with Wisdom. Be wise with Understanding. Examine with them and probe from them. Make [each] thing stand on it essence and make the Creator sit on His Base.”5 J.F.C, Fuller also wrote, “Thus from the Ain Soph Aur flow out the ten Sephiroth or Principles; hence the decad is considered the perfect number by the Qabalah, the all-embracing unit emerging from the No-Thing (0-1), and the unity which ultimately is to be radiated back into No-Thingness (1-0).”6

In order to express these principles, the Kabbalists have built several different Trees of Life. The Tree of Life with its twenty-two Paths are traditionally placed on the Tree as shown in diagram A) and in the diagram “The Traditional Golden Dawn Tree of Life.”7 The diagram below, from Robert Wang’s The Qabalistic Tarot, shows the development of the Tree of Life. He writes, “A) Form of the Tree in Kircher’s Oedipus Aegvpticus, 1652. B) Adapted from Robert Fludd’s Complete Works, 1617. C) Illustration from Porta Lucis, Ausburg, 1517. D) Illustration from Pa’amon ve Rimmon, 1708.”8

The Developmet of the Tree of Life

Aryeh Kaplan also illustrated the development of the Tree of Life in his Sefer Yetzirah. (pp. 22-32). Diagram A) he termed “According to the older Kabbalists.” Diagram C) “According to the Safed School, based on the Zohar (1:59b). Cf. Pardes Rimonim 7:3” and “The 32 paths as defined by the Ari.” Below is a diagram of a Tree which Kaplan termed the “Natural Array” of the Tree of Life and “The 32 paths as defined by the Gra.”9

The Natural Array of the Tree of Life

In the Sefer Yetzirah, the natural array of the Tree of Life is built following the arrangement of the numbers three, seven and twelve. Triangles arc formed by the connections of the Sephiroth and Paths. The Kabbalists used this Tree as a starting point. They changed the arrangement of several Paths to express particular ideas. One of them is the idea that life is three dimensional if not more dimensional. How is the Tree of Life formed in three dimensional space? In other words what is the minimum shape used to separate the inside of itself from the outside. What gives everybody their uniqueness is that they are physically separate from others yet are still able to relate and share their experiences with others. The Kabbalists tried to understand these feelings and express them through the Tree of Life.

To build a three dimensional Tree, what shapes having a total of ten Sephiroth (vertexes) could be formed. The Tree of Life’s ten Sephiroth become vertexes which are points at which the lines (paths) of an angle intersect. The six upper Sephiroth form an Octahedron. The Octahedron consists of six vertexes and twelve paths. The next shape would have to be four vertexes or less. As Buckminster Fuller has proven, it takes a minimum of four vertexes to enclose space. The shape formed is the Tetrahedron. The Tetrahedron contains six paths. These two shapes total eighteen paths. If one places these two shapes together at a certain angle, they will resemble the Tree of Life. The four remaining paths are vertical paths. The first two Paths are from Kether to Tiphareth and Tiphareth to Yesod. These Paths are part of the Middle Pillar. The last two Paths connect Chesed to Netzach and Geburah to Hod. The Tree of Life is now built three dimensionally as shown:

The Three Dimensional Tree of Life in Geometric Form

In building the three dimensional Tree, one reason for using the Tetrahedron and Octahedron is contained in The Complete Golden Dawn Cipher Manuscript. We read in Cipher Folio number 47 (4○=7□ Admission, Part 4), “H[e]g[emonl shows tetrad [four] & hexad [six] of Yetz[iratic] & G(e)omantic Tree of Life.”10 The Octahedron and especially the Tetrahedron are shapes that appear throughout the Golden Dawn’s ceremonies and teachings. The Octahedron compressed from its three dimensional form into two dimensions looks identical to the Tree of Life from Kether to Tiphareth except for the two Paths that go from Chesed to Kether and Geburah to Kether. The Octahedron now becomes a Hexagram which is the shape of the Banner of the East. The Tetrahedron compressed into two dimensional form exactly matches the lower four Sephiroth and their Paths. The Banner of the West also expresses the concepts of four and six. The Banner is a triangle with a cross in the centre which becomes the fourth point thus forming a Tetrahedron.

The Banners of the East (white) and West (black)11

In conclusion, the ancient Greeks and today’s current mathematical system is based on the square with its ninety degree coordinate system. As previously explained, the Tree of Life which represents the Universe is structured with triangles and not squares. The Pillars in the Golden Dawn ceremonies pose an interesting question for aspiring Kabbalists as well as mathematicians. The tops of the Pillars are red Tetrahedrons symbolic of the path of light. The bottom of the Pillars are black square cubes symbolizing the path of darkness. By building the three dimensional Tree, the Kabbalah offers a way out of the state of darkness.

Aiwass, Maat and the New Aeon by Simon Hinton

Aiwass, Maat and the New Aeon

by Simon Hinton

We live in very strange times. The technological advances of the world are outpacing our evolution as the rate of their manifestation grows exponentially. Our consciousness exists within a spacetime curve that appears to be turning in on itself, and as we surge through its super permutated world the configurations of our starry heavens and the subtle influences on our being transform, and we witness: a new pattern has been forged. This is the New Aeon, a new dimension of possibilities, a new age of enlightenment, of Leo the Kingly Man and his Aquarian bride the Queen of Space. For those perceptive enough to tune in to these ever changing patterns a realization and sense of purpose may be perceived. This purpose is sometimes referred to as the Great Work and although it is of a magickal formulation (because it involves action) it is ultimately of mystical essence because it is a realization of a return to the Mother of all. Five hundred years before the birth of Christ the Egyptian Prince Priest Ankh-af-na-Khonsu of the 26th dynasty sensing this purpose and recognising Man's divergence from it wrote on the Stélé of Revealing the following words, which have been translated into English from their hieroglyphic form,

I am the Lord of Thebes, and I
The inspired forth speaker of Mentu
For me unveils the veiled sky
The self slain Ankh-af-na-Khonsu
Whose words are truth. I invoke, I greet
Thy presence, o Ra-Hoor-Khuit!

Unity uttermost showed!
I adore the might of thy breath,
Supreme and terrible God,
Who makest the gods and death
To tremble before Thee:-
I, I adore thee!

Appear on the throne of Ra!
Open the ways of Khu!
Lighten the ways of Ka!
The ways of the Khabs run through
To stir me or still me!
Aum! let it fill me.

There are many different belief systems which have evolved over the ages, most of which contain, to some degree or other, remnants of a wisdom of antiquity, the essence of which, if truly captured and invoked, will deliver essential universal truths empowering the initiate. Unfortunately however, history is replete with those who have taken the allegory literally, or have attached a false reality to the parable. The misinterpretation of spiritual experience has caused enormous imbalance and suffering throughout the centuries, which is why in the course of enquiry we should always do ourselves the justice of keeping an open mind. When filling in a cryptic crossword one needs to apply a little ingenuity, and similarly when dealing with the symbolisms of ancient religions there are rarely straightforward answers. During this discourse I may at times speak in terms that are couched in a language with which you may not be familiar, and in such cases I would ask you to kindly bear with me and to exercise fully your intuitive capabilities in order to capture the spirit of the information imparted. The word occult literally means hidden and occultism is about identifying the source of the power or energy that imbues a system; the power behind the power which may remain hidden to the casual observer. This pattern of energy is what is meant when we talk about a current. The Typhonian/Stellar current is of ancient antiquity and predates the solar, masculine cults by thousands of years. This is the current which Ankh-af-na-Khonsu, the O.T.O. and every 'true' pagan wishes to revive. Although the Draconian current to which I am referring, may manifest in different forms, its central essence remains the same: the light burns within; the Khu is in the Khabs.

In April 1904 the magician Aleister Crowley received a powerful grimoire from a spirit named Aiwass called The Book of The Law. It later became known as Liber Al and was an extremely pure earthing of the Typhonian current and a reflection of the beginning of powerful changes in human consciousness, which tallied with astronomical changes in our starry heavens. The Prince Priest Ankh-af-na-Khonsu attempted to revive the worship of Set-Typhon the 'terrible' God or man's true initiator. ;Furthermore Crowley believed he was an avatar of Ankh-af-na-Khonsu and the magickal memories he invoked of his many incarnations reflected his central role in the Great Work. The three verses that I quoted in my introduction from the Stélé of Revealing also formed part of the third chapter of Liber Al and were interpreted by Crowley along the lines suggested by the following Rosicrucian Benediction:

May thy Mind be open unto the Higher!
May thy Heart be the Centre of Light!
May thy Body be the Temple of the Rosy Cross!

In the material world Liber Al's prophesies were fulfilled with great accuracy as the earth became bathed in the blood of the birth pangs of the new Aeon. The horrors of two world wars and the breakdown in the fabric of society has proven to be an inevitable byproduct of an incomparable period of great transition in human history. These changes were foretold in Liber Al and Crowley further noted the odd fact that every time he published the book a major war would seem to break out nine months he nce. The madness, suffering and general world mayhem that has escalated since 1904 has been the inevitable short term result of a consciousness revolution where the build up of hidden forces and latent energies have been dramatically released. But the pain and difficulty that accompanies such changes can be minimised, and is very much dependent on the rate at which we can accept certain principles and adapt our lives in harmony with them. These expansions of consciousness have triggered, and are triggering, great effects on the material plane as humankind grapples with new modes of perception that are often radically different to conditioned response. As a simple analogy we could think of someone born with a 'silver spoon' in their mouth and eternally reliant on others, only to find a sudden change in circumstance resulting in them having to take full responsibility for themselves - there are bound to be a few teething problems.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law, one of Liber Al's central axioms, may appear on the surface to give complete behaviourial license, but this is not the case. In actuality the requirement is for us to take absolute responsibility for our actions by self-imposed discipline. Our love and behaviour should be natural and spontaneous while at the same time subject to our true will, our dharma or essential pattern of being, which brings us to another of the Liber Al's central axi Love is the law, love under will. This further requires the recognition that the only ones that can save us are ourselves. This realization brings an end to the myth that one can only reach spiritual fulfilment through a mediator or saviour. The concept of original sin is therefore a fallacy. The new law states categorically that we can reach the God Head directly. The results of New Aeon thinking are radical: goodbye confessional boxes, goodbye atonement for sins: the onl in is restriction. Aleister 'says', Welcome then my children to the age of the Anti-Christ - the Beast has arisen from the sea. Small wonder then that dear Mr Crowley had all and sundry, superstitiously scurrying for their garlic: the message was bloody scary - there ain't no God but Man!

The Egyptian Goddess Typhon and her son Set were demonised by the latter Egyptian dynasties who were beginning to adopt a paternalistic religious culture which resulted in the male God Osiris at the head of the trinity. This Osirian cult was then plagiarised and worked into the Christian' scriptures completing with powerful effect the hatchet job on the 'real' paganism. The true pagans from different cultures with their initiated gnosis and their great god Pan were targeted as evil heathen worshippers and persecuted. Pan/Set and Satan are but different names that correspond to the same type of idea, that of creative, enlightening energy, which is by its very nature chaotic and difficult to deal with. But it is not evil. A useful analogy might be the force of electricity, which if utilized by a balanced individual can be used to give warmth and protection but if used unwisely can maim or kill.

Shaitan-Aiwass is a form of Set recognized by Crowley as his Holy Guardian Angel but Crowley only truly recognised this fact when he had 'crossed the Abyss' and substituted 'Adonai' meaning Lord with Aiwass. Crossing the Abyss is a technical term which means transcending fully all personal identity by 'dying' to the world. (The death here is not physical but a metaphor for complete dis-identification with the ego, a process which is necessary to enjoy the highest mystical states, as these transcend duality.) In the light of my researches into the Book of the Law Crowley's relationship with Aiwass makes particular sense if we consider the spirit of Aiwass to be the Holy Guardian Angel of all Mankind, or put another way, if we consider Mankind to be an organic sentient entity, there is a force/a current/a being/a pattern which represents that entity's true will. One of the numbers of Aiwass generated by gemetria is 418, which is also the number of the Great Work and results from multiplying 19 by 22. This I believe lends further credence to my suggestion that the special relationship Aiwass has with Mankind is that he represents our true will. The number 22 represents the Universe, being the number of paths on the Tree of Life and the number 19 represents manifestation, being the number of paths that have some existence below the Abyss (in the phenomenal world). When Crowley took the 'jump' from personal initiation, to the full realization that consciousness is a continuum by taking the Oath of the Abyss (which means interpreting all events as a direct and significant dealing with a Unity called God) a fuller connection was made with Aiwass. The New Aeon is an age of direct recognition of this incredible creative, chaotic potential. It is the age of genius. Saturn is the planet that corresponds with Set and as such represents both initiation and the stricture of us facing our karma. It equates on the Tree of Life with Binah the sephiroth of Understanding which rests above the duality of human consciousness (and above the Abyss of the difference) in the Supernal Triad. We have entered an age when the shackles of suppression will be blasted physically, magickally and mystically. The discipline normally associated with Saturn is required to guide us through these chaotic times. Considering the difficulties he was to face in his lifetime, Crowley at the beginning of his magickal career, picked what proved to be a very aptly chosen magickal motto, Perdurabo, meaning 'I will endure till the end', and when the chaos of Set/Horus, so symptomatic of the New Age, was invoked, it is hardly surprising that he was labelled the wickedest man in the world by a world that didn't realize how wicked it had been.

Aleister Crowley had received rigorous training from the Golden Dawn organization both in mental discipline and in magickal and mystical practice. He was also the most learned of Qabalists and possessed a brilliant mind of extraordinary capability, and yet in spite of these exceptional qualities he was not able to discover all of the meanings that lay hidden in Liber Al. Crowley, for all his radical thinking was still a child of the Old Aeon, because he was born before April 1904, and some of his understandings were slanted by personal bias i.e. his subjective conditioning. Although he was the world's most advanced mystic his understandings of the 'big picture' were in many ways limited, that is to say there were certain aspects of the Book which were to remain occult or hidden. But this was how it was intended, for Liber Al clearly states that its message would be revealed over time, and that there were some mysteries contained within that no Beast would divine.

One of the most curious incidents connected with Liber Al, and one often used as evidence that the Book derived from a praetor-human source, concerns Charles Stansfield-Jones or Frater Achad as he is more commonly known. Liber Al stated specifically that the central qabalistic key of the book would be discovered by Crowley's 'child' a One that would follow him. Crowley was a highly accomplished magician and used sex magick techniques constantly through his life. This prophesy in Liber Al had set his mind working and he was eager to produce a magickal heir. To do this he engaged in several workings with his 'Scarlet Woman' of the time, Soror Hilarion (Jane Foster) around the Autumn Equinox of 1915, believing he would achieve a manifestation on the physical plane. But it didn't quite work out that way. Fortunately he kept a magickal journal and exactly nine months after performing an act of sex magick with Hilarion, Frater Achad, who was at that time a Neophyte in Crowley's mystical organization the A.A., became a 'Babe of the Abyss' taking the grade 8° 3 or Magister Templi. The magick had worked and within eighteen months Achad had discovered the main key to Liber Al, 31 which equals both 'God' and 'Not', AL and LA forming one third of the Thelemic Trinity 93 which equates to Agape-Love and Thelema-Will. When the words 'God' and 'Not' are interchanged in the Book the sense of certain obscure passages becomes apparent. Another curious aspect is that Jones took the name 'Achad' which means Unity or One, at the beginning of his magickal career, supplying further proof that he was the 'One' prophesied. Another interesting point is that the numeration of Achad in Hebrew is 13, being 31 reversed, which represents the lunar current or principle, and one in which Crowley and his obsession with the Beast couldn't fully capture, other than through chosen feminine vessels which manifested the current: his Scarlet Women. The Unity of 13 is represented on the Tree of Life when one takes the ten sephiroth and three veils of negative existence. There are 13 full moons in a year.

It is a well recorded fact that Achad went completely 'off the rails' for a good while becoming totally obsessed with his role as Crowley's 'magickal son' and discoverer of Liber Al's key. His imbalance or magickal obsession undoubtedly occurred as a direct result of him taking the Oath of the Abyss without working through the earlier grades of initiation. His ordeal was a long one and he suffered temporary madness resulting in such acts of lunacy as, cavorting around Vancouver clad in nothing more than a raincoat (which he then cast off to demonstrate the removal of all restrictions) and joining the Roman Catholic Church. However, despite this period of insanity, Achad did provide valuable insights into Liber Al that have proven to be creatively viable and which shed important light on some of the mysteries contained therein. Most notably he heralded in the Aeon of Maat on April 2nd 1948, his 62nd birthday and 44 years after the inception of the bloody Aeon of Horus .

Among occultists Achad's announcement certainly caused controversy with most dismissing his claims as the words of a fool. The purists consider an Aeon to refer only to a vast period of time, in fact 2166 years or the length of time it takes our Sun to pass through the Vernal Equinox. There have been others however who have not dismissed Achad's claims so lightly and subsequent events have occurred that suggest he may well have been on the right track. But for those that do take such a fun damentalist stance I would firstly ask, what reason the necessity to always view time in such a strict linear fashion, and secondly, is the astrological technique of dividing the heavens into twelve equal segments, which is the mark of the post-Typhonian Solar cults, the most favourable method of concatenating patterns? Throughout human history there are certainly instances where individuals can be said to have been ahead of their time. A case in point with regards to receiving occult vibrations from future Aeons, has to be that of Dr John Dee and Sir Edward Kelly, who in the 16th century received the Enochian magickal system, although admittedly they did not fully understand it. Rather than viewing time and the succession of Aeons through such a reductionist lens, a more fruitful attitude to take might be to recognize that we live in the Aeon which we project around us. As an example of this variance one only has to look at Christendom - decaying yes - but still very much in existence, and still very much a reality to hundreds of millions of individuals, existing as it does as an Osirian, old Aeon patriarchal structure. From a purely scientific point of view the concept of receiving information from a future time was hypothesized by the American Nobel Laureate and physicist Richard Feynmann who proposed that the atomic particles known as positrons are electrons travelling backwards in time, which by non-physical means impinge on the percipient's consciousness making precognition possible. This theory is one that would most certainly tie in with the idea of an Aeon coming 'before' its time.

So far we have briefly discussed the inception of Liber Al dictated by Aiwass, a form of the God Set, the initiator or bringer of light. In the Egyptian mythos, Set, and Horus his brother, are engaged in a perpetual warfare. Symbolically therefore, we can see Aiwass (as a form of Set) taking on the warlike role where necessary, by initiating, so as to break down old fashion superstitions and restrictions which have in some form or other prevented the light of truth reaching our consciousne ss. Aiwass manifested through Crowley for this general task, and Crowley recognizing this stated quite clearly that he considered one of his chief roles was to restore and present a purer form of paganism to the human inhabitants of this planet. When I speak of a purer form I refer again to the earlier Typhonian current which the Prince Priest Ankh-af-na-Khonsu tried to revive in the 26th Dynasty, and which was suppressed by the later Osirian, solar cults. But the true current of initiation has always survived and after its Egyptian suppression it surfaced again in various Far Eastern traditions, as it also did in Jacques de Molay's Order of the Knights Templar, and other Western groups, right up until the present day.

Aiwass as a form of Set, manifested as the Beast or chaotic, creative force through Crowley. This could be described as the masculine principle corresponding with Hadit the omnipresent point, and one of the two infinities represented in Liber Al. Here it should be remembered that the great initiator Aiwass is the minister of Hoor-pa-Kraat which is the silent or concealed result of the meeting of thesetwo infinities. As such Aiwass must naturally have the pot ential to manifest as the Scarlet Woman Typhon, or the goddess-Nuit principle, the circle whose circumference is infinite and the other infinity represented in Liber Al. The first letter of His name Aleph conceals the mystery of the Double Current, for its numeration is One representing the male principle while corresponding to Nought in the Tarot which represents the female principle. The associated tarot card is the Fool which is the pure Fool of Act 1 in Parsival. As an interesting aside an old name for this card is Mat from the Italian Matto meaning fool and whose earliest derivation is surely the Egyptian Goddess Maat. Maat can quite clearly be seen then as a form of Nuit and these potentialities exist in all human beings regardless of gender. This potentialized state is symbolised by Harpocrates God of silence 'the Babe in the Egg of Blue.' In the truly initiated human being these qualities will manifest side by side in balanced equilibrium. This stat e of natural unfettered balance is that which all initiates should aspire to irrespective of which tradition they choose to align themselves with: the true emancipation of realized potential in total harmony and ease with itself. The meeting of the two infinities Nuit and Hadit results therefore in the microcosmic human being, The Kingdom of Ra-Hoor-Khuit. For those who visualize Liber Al solely as a book of the Age of Horus the occultist Kenneth Grant highlights a very valid point for what may be considered a possible imbalance of perspective. Crowley was instructed to change not so much as a single letter of the law as there were mysteries contained therein which would be discovered later. The nature of such transmissions were known as Class A. However the book was originally known as Liber L which Crowley changed after Achad discovered the qabalistic key. L it should be noted is the sacred letter in the Holy Twelvefold Table that stabilizes the Universe. L is the letter which corresponds with Libra, Balance and 'Adjustment' in the Tarot. In the Crowley/Harris Deck this card is represented by the Goddess Maat. This is the true understanding of the Book of the Law: a journey to Universal Harmony.

At this juncture in our enquiry we shall examine the goddess Maat in a little more detail. Maat is the Egyptian Goddess of Truth, Justice, Righteousness, Measurement and Balance. She is depicted as a beautiful young woman wearing a blue feather her symbol, in a headband. She is the daughter of Ra the Sun God and the wife of Thoth the Ibis headed scribe of the Gods. Maat is an ideal, a principle, and the principle is that of perfection and balance. The Maat principle then is that which should naturally follow the enlightenment that the initiator Set brings. This perfection is for that of the whole human race. The martial Horus destroys the remnants of past philosophies while Maat invokes the future. The planet we live on is in a terrible state and is being destroyed on the Outer. Ecological disasters present themselves to us on the news every day as we poison our Mother Earth. The key to change ultimately lies not in political structure however, but in our minds or rather our consciousness. Self-realization is the key and the internal battle which results in initiation manifests as the Double Current in Liber Al. There is much about the human race that needs to be purged. Swift as a trodden serpent turn and strike! Be thou yet deadlier than he. Liber Al III:42. By our very existing we destroy the past and invoke the future; our past, our future. But the war is in the present, the and Now! The present is Ra-Hoor-Khuit which corresponds to the third chapter of Liber Al and is the most difficult to understand. Above the Abyss there are no contradictions because the inner conflicts of the personality complex have been transcended. Understanding shines and the balancing aspect of Saturn can enact. Set only causes chaos where it is 'needed' and dualistic thinking always requires some degree of chaos. This should not be misconstrued as a carefree license to mess with the Gods: Set is a powerful deity and we must be prepared for upheaval if we invoke Him, in the same that no one in their right mind would allow a completely untrained pilot to fly a Jumbo Jet. When Ordeal X (the crossing of the Abyss) has been successfully accomplished the harmonising features of Maat will greet us and the Unity of Thought resulting from our initiation can de-reflect upon itself and become no-thing. This is the secret of the Mother and her name is Nuit!

The following working has been conceived as a method of visualising in very simple terms how the current of Shaitan-Aiwass operates in a Horus' Aeon sense and how the 93 Thelemic current and its effects, may be moulded and developed in a balanced form so as to tally with the Maatian current/Aeon. It should be understood that these forces represent different polarisations in the consciousness continuum and may be further visualised as a twisting helix which has a corresponding organic representation on the molecular level, our D.N.A.-the very building blocks of life, because when the two infinities Nuit and Hadit meet they spiral and curl. On a larger scale Human Beings possess 46 separate chromosomes and 46 is the number of Maat.

You may wish to shut you eyes for the duration.

Working

Imagine you are standing in the middle of a dark and densely filled forest. The trees around you are all diseased and rotten and the air is filled with millions of bugs that have come to feed on the decaying carcasses of dead animals that lay strewn at your feet. All around you is death and the symbols of death; the putrid smell of rotting flesh fills the air. You cannot move and you cannot see, and just liked the Hanged Man of the Tarot you stand petrified, glued to the spot with no way out. You are restricted, caught up in a guilt ridden world repressed and helpless. Everything is contaminated and there seems to be no hope. So you open your heart and scream out to the God of All My Lord why have you forsaken me? Is there no light left in the world? But the great God Pan laughs at your tragic grimace- You have forsaken yourself. is nature's reply. All experience occurs within, so you must will your destiny.

Instinctively you recognize the truth in Pan's words and pray further to save yourself by enacting your magickal will which means invoking the Angel of mankind to enlighten the dark tunnels and byways of Set.

Your power I plead to crystallise in form
And our true Stardom weave
Its Universal orbit Born-
Less One strayed god perchance should fall
Yes I shall die my Love
Reborn to blaze this path my call!

I summon thee Aiwass!
From all the Gods and energies and powers of the Universe!
Let no obstacle of mind, matter, space or time
E'er come between us!

Aiwass Aiwass as I was
I bid thee come forth!
Shine the light of initiation upon I!

And from the overhead clearing a single spark descends, illuminating the night with a faint glimmer of possibility. You have made the jump of self connection and in response you hear a faint whisper from the God of All If you want the light you must will the light.

So you take heed and will the light causing the spark to catch on a small piece of dry wood which ignites, shedding a river of brightness. And with this light you witness that the gloom and death around you are but a section of the cycle of transition: the netherside of beauty. And then the fire comes - burning, destroying and laying waste to the old, tearing down the lying spectres of the centuries. With the force and fire of creative opposition you have inadvertently invoked the Hawk headed God which succumbs and answers to your Angel's direction. It burns and burns again swift as the trodden serpent in the Kingdom of Ra-Hoor-Khuit Now!

This is the initiation of enlightenment destruction.

And you pray further to the Angel of mankind as the horrors of your mind melt away.

Restore the feather of Maat's beauteous balance!
For I to suck the nectar
Flowing bountifully copiously!
A shimmering cosmic orgasm
Of rapturous liaison!
I plead with you my Angel
Come again! Come again! Come again!

IAF SABAF!

Such are the words!

......................................................has spoken!

So mote it be!

The earth has now been purged of its atrocities while Saturn has eaten your sick children: the demons of your mind which had been feeding all their lives on your prana. And now you sit on sweet smelling grass while the sun shines kindly upon thee and there next to you is single blue feather lying on the ground. Ahh..... so this is the truth of Maat: existence is pure joy and all sorrows are but shadows. Initiation is being let into the joke by degrees which is why we'll double up in laughter when the truth unfolds. And from the seed of your consciousness a tree begins to grow and resting in its tallest boughs the honeybee builds its home in hexagonal style. Without a lust of result it tirelessly works, providing warmth, nutrition, security and happiness for its offspring. You are the bee and Shaitan is your nectar, the Unity of consciousness manifests a reflection of itself through you - a mechanism of neurological structure, wired to receive.
This is the initiation of enlightenment creation. This is the initiation of Maat.

The working is completed. Relax and allow your consciousness to fully return to the room.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Since the reception of Liber Al there have been other Typhonian Transmissions that have helped to enlighten initiates further. Of particular interest with regards to this discussion, is the transmission received by Soror Andahadna in 1974 known as Liber Pennae Praenumbra delivered by a spirit calling itself Na'ton. This was a powerful transmission which very much embodied the Maatian current. Rather than supersede Liber Al, which is probably the purest and most potent Typhonian trans mission extant, Liber Pennae Praenumbra succeeds in complimenting it, while delivering fresh impetus to both the Current and its development. The world we live in is not static and new understandings will always evolve. It is important to remember that the manifestation of the twin current is dependent on the neurological structures through which it earths. At the time of the reception of Liber Al for example there was a tremendous world interest in Egyptology and Aleister Crowley was in Cairo. The beauty of the Egyptian mythos as an infrastructure for transmitting thought process is the wide pantheon of the gods it embodies, which can be used very efficiently to explain or isolate certain types of ideas or energies. In a similar way a study of the Jewish Qabalah enables a mystical filing cabinet to be created in the mind of the student in which ideas of all classes can be ordered. Gerald Massey the 19th Century Scholar whose monumental works have provided the pillars of ou r Typhonia, made a perceptive observation when he noted that external currents, forces and phenomena are explained and communicated in the sign language of the day. Today that sign language may embody the terms of quantum physics, special relativity or digitalized computer language, but the sun still shines and the seasons continue unerringly which by way of illustration demonstrates that the Current exists which ever model is used to earth it.

The Double Current which traces its way through Liber Al must be recognized as two strands of the same force. Liber Al 1: 45 states:
The Perfect and the Perfect are one Perfect and not two; nay are none! To the truly initiated mind therefore this will be perceived not as a conflict, but as the division which comes with dualistic thought process and when we transcend duality we will recognize this clearly as a harmonious Unity . This is the vision of Maat. At this point I would like to quote from Liber Pennae Praenumbra.

The hidden One of the Abyss now gives the two wherein is wrought the higher alchemy: supporting Earth is Chthonos - learn it well, and all bonds shall be loosed for the Will's Working. Surmounting Spirit, there is Ychronos, whose nature is duration and the passing-away thereof.

The two are one and form the Kingdom's essence. Who master's them is the Master of the World. They are the utter keys of transmutation, and the keys of the power of other elements.

Nema the book's transmitter describes in the commentary Chthonos as spacetime, matter energy, and Ychronos as the chart of changes through the time dimension. Both are fractal complexities.

In the next verse the Double Current is identified as being the substance of man. The Kingdom corresponds to Malkulth on the Tree of Life which represents Earth. This is described in Liber Al as The Kingdom of Ra Hoor-Khuit, which as I have already mentioned is formed from the two infinities Nuit and Hadit. The meaning is clarified in the following verse.

Of old ye knew the key of two in one conjoined. Ye have lived and loved
the full measure as NU and HAD, as PAN and BABALON. The mystery of mine own image do ye also know, for such a Truth was for the ancient Orders of the East and the West.

This image is Baphomet, the Goat-headed human figure with an erect phallus and female breasts. This androgynous figure represents the Unity that is achieved when duality is transcended. On the material plane we can see this spirit manifesting when males recognize unashamedly, qualities within themselves that have traditionally been conditioned as feminine, and conversely when females recognize traditionally conditioned male qualities, as part of a balanced whole within themselves. Yes, all of us, both male and female can adopt the symbolism of the Beast and the Scarlet Woman personally, just as we can both give and receive, think and feel. True peace and long lasting happiness is an attainable reality if we truly capture the spirit of the Double Current and mould our realizations into a hamonious Unity.

In conclusion I would like to quote from a small reception that I received from a spirit identifying itself as my Holy Guardian Angel in July of last year. The reception was dictated by an inner voice in what proved to be an unrehearsed and completely natural, free following communication. It formed a small book which I named Liber Omonoia 311 which means Unity in Greek - its numeration totaling 311 which I later discovered. The book's contents have played a pivotal role in my personal initiation and are imbued with the Maatian current, although in no way do I consider the book to be either a new dispensation or even a postscript to Liber Al. What its reception provided was vital additional information that acted as a catalyst for a deeper understanding of The Book of the Law and the Double Current contained therein.

6. One is the key.
Chosen for those that free.
And in the day of balance it shall be three for ye.
7. Thus ye have One and three
Three and One.
Had Unity
Let not one well know the other.
8. In the day of Maat the justified will gain by losing that which they chose to explain.
Negating the effects of pain.
9. And only then shall your Unity be found
And only then Not again shall my children breathe the light without breath. The dark without death.

The Ladder of Lights Paperback by William G. Gray (PDF)

Hands down, this is one of the best books on modern Qabala ever written! Gray takes a step-by-step look at the Ten Sephiroth and their traditional attributions in each of the Four Qabalistic Worlds. A relatively simple, no-nonsense approach to modern Qabalism.

In some ways, I view this book as a companion piece to Dion Fortune's much better-known work, "The Mystical Qabalah," since both books provide the reader with a fairly straightforward approach to this challenging subject. Where Fortune starts at the top of the Tree of Life and works her downward, however, Gray starts at the bottom of the Tree and works his way to the top. Although Grey's interpretation of the Tree is similar to Fortune's, by approaching the material from a completely different perspective he is also able to provide new insight.

This book's greatest strength is that it analyzes each of the ten Sephiroth from each of the Four Qabalistic worlds, providing the reader with something sorely missed in Dion Fortune's classic book on the subject. This book's greatest weakness is that, unlike Fortune, Gray pays almost no attention to the organization of the Sephiroth upon the Tree, or to the relationships between them. Without a word of explanation Gray also reverses the traditional Yetziratic attributions of Malkuth and Yesod, assigning them to the angelic choirs of Cherubim and Ashim respectively, although I do see the logic and consistency of this attribution.

Overall, this is a good, solid title for somebody interested in approaching modern (non-rabbinical) Qabalism for the first time. I'd recommend reading Dion Fortune's book first, if you haven't already, and then tackling this book immediately afterwards for a different take on the same material.

XXXI Hymns To the Star Goddess Who is Not by XIII: which is ACHAD (Charles Stansfeld Jones)

XXXI HYMNS

TO THE STAR GODDESS

Who is Not

BY XIII: which is ACHAD

I. Invocation

Mother of the Sun, Whose Body is White with the Milk of the Stars, bend upon Thy servant and impart unto him Thy Secret Kiss!
Enkindle within him the Holy Ecstasy Thou hast promised unto them that love Thee; the Ecstasy which redeemeth from all pain.
Hast thou not proclaimed: All the sorrows are but shadows, they pass and are done, but there is that which remains? That the Universe is Pure Joy-that Thou givest unimaginable Joys on Earth--that Thou demandest naught in sacrifice?
Let me then rejoice, for therein may I serve Thee most fully. Let it be Thy Joy to see my joy; even as Thou hast promised in Thy Holy Book!
Now, therefore, am I Joyful in Thy Love.
AUMN

II. The Brook

I wandered beside the running stream, and mine eyes caught the glint of Thy Starry Orbs in the swirling waters.
So is it with my mind; it flows on towards the Great Sea of Understanding wherein I may come to know Thee more fully.
Sometimes, as it journeys, it threatens to overflow its banks in its eagerness to reflect a wider image of Thine Infinite Body.
Ah! How the very stones, over which flow the life of my being, thrill at the tender caress of Thy reflected Image.
Thou, too, art Matter; it is I -- Thy Complement -- who am motion! Therefore these very stones are of Thee, but the Spirit -- the Life -- is the very Self of me; mine Inmost Being.
Flow on, O Stream! Flow on, O Life! Towards the Great Sea of Understanding, the Great Mother.

III. The Rose Garden

Long have I lain and waited for Thee in the Rose Garden of Life; yet ever Thou withholdest Thyself from mine Understanding.
As I lay I contemplated Thy nature as that of an Infinite Rose.
Petals, petals, petals.. but where, O Beauteous One, is Thy Heart?
Hast Thou no Heart? Are Thy petals Infinite so that I may never reach the Core of Thy Being?
Yet, Thou hast said: "I love you! I yearn to you! Pale or purple, veiled or voluptuous, I who am all pleasure and purple, and drunkeness of the innermost sense, desire you: Come unto me!"
Yea! Mine innermost sense is drunken; it is intoxicated upon the Dew of the Rose. Thy Heart is my Heart; there is no difference, O Beloved.
When I shall have penetrated to the Heart of Thine Infinite Rose, there shall I find Myself.
But I shall never come to myself---only to Thee.

IV. The Fox Glove

Tall and straight as a Fox Glove do I stand before Thee, Mother of Heaven.
The flower of my being is given over to a strange conceit; I grow up towards the Stars and not towards the Sun.
Art Thou not Mother of the Sun?
Thus have I blasphemed the Lord and Giver of Life for Thy sake. Yet am I not ashamed, for in forgetting the Sun I am become the Sun--Thy Son--yet a thousand times more Thy Lover.
The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but now I have nowhere to lay my head; for tall and straight as a Fox Glove do I stand before Thee. My resting place is the Womb of the Stars.
Yet all that I may comprehend of Thine Infinite Body is but as the Glove upon one of Thy soft sweet hands, touching the Earth, not hurting the little flowers.

V. The Storm

A Dark Night and the Storm. The lightening flashes between Thee and me. I am dazzled so that I see Thee not.
So in the depths of my being flash the fires of life; they blind me to the Understanding of Thee and Thine Infinite Body of Stars.
Yet I see Thee reflected in the body of her I love, as we lie with quivering limbs awaiting the coming of the sound of thunder.
She fears the thunder, and turns within herself for consolation.
But even there the Lightning flameth, for I have loosed the fires of my being within the dark recess---in honour of the Storm and of Thine Infinite Body which I see not.

VI. The Hole in The Roof

Once I knew an ancient serpent. He delighted to bask in the Sunshine which penetrated through a tiny hole in the roof of the cave.
He was old and very wise.
He said: "Upon me is concentrated the Light of the whole Universe."
But a little brown beetle, who had long lived in the cave with him, looked up, and spreading his wings passed out through the hole in roof---into the Infinite Beyond.
Thus, forsaking wisdom, would I come to Thee, Beloved Lady of the Starry Heavens.

VII. The Design

Strange curves: and every Curve a Number woven into a Musical and Harmonious Pattern.
Such was the design showed me by my friend when first we met.
It was like an exchange of greetings by means of an inward recognition.
Oh! Could I but grasp the Ever-changing Design of Thy Star Body, Mother of Heaven!
Yet, it is written: "Every man and every woman is a star. Every number is infinite, there is no difference."
Such then is Life, for those who love Thee: Strange Curves, and every Curve a Number woven into a Musical and Harmonious Design.

VIII. The Snow Drift

My body was blue as Thine, O Beloved, when they found me. I was stiff as if held in a close embrace. Nor was I conscious of aught but Thee, till the small fires of Earth brought me back with an agony of tingling pain.
How came I to be lost in the snow-drift?
I remember how I had taken shelter from the blinding storm. The snow fell about me, and I waited, turning my thought to Thee.
Then did I realize how every snow-flake is built as a tiny star. I looked closer, burying my face in the white pile, as in Thy Bosom.
Mine arms embraced the snow-drift; I clung to it in a mad ecstacy.
Thus would I have pressed Thy Body to mine, wert Thou not Infinite and I but as tiny as a star-flake.
So was my body frozen---as by the utmost cold of inter-stellar space.
It was blue as Thine when they found me locked in Thine embrace.

IX. Daylight

In the Daylight I see not Thy Body of Stars, O Beloved.
The little light of the Sun veils the Great Light of the Stars, for to-day Thou seemest distant.
The Sun burns like a great Torch, and Earth seems as one of His little Spheres, filled with life.
I am but a tiny spermatozoon, but within me is the fiery and concentrated essence of Life.
Draw me up into Thyself, O Sun! Project me into the Body of Our Lady Nuit!
Thus shall a new Star be born, and I shall see Thee even in the Daylight, O Beloved.

X. The Bird

Once I bought a little bird; his cage was very small; it had only one perch. He was so young he had not even learned to sing, but he chirped gladly when I brought him home.
Then I raised the bars of his cage, and without a moment's hesitation he flew out into the room, and spying the cage of the love-birds, perched upon it and examined it carefully.
Not long afterwards another and stronger cage was obtained for the love-birds, for they had pecked through some of the frail bars. When the little bird was offered the discarded cage, he quickly hopped from his tiny one to theirs.
Now he has three perches and room for his tail, and when we open the door of his cage he refuses to come out. Perhaps he fears to lose what he had once coveted and then obtained.
Herein lies the secret of Government. Give the people what will make them reasonably comfortable; let them have three perches and room for their tails; and forgetting their slavery and restrictions, they will be content.
Hast Thou not said "The slaves shall serve." Lady of the Starry Heaven?

XI. The Moral

There is another moral to the story of the little bird. Having gained his desire for a larger cage, he forgot his longing for Freedom.
The door remained open; the room was before him, wherein he could stretch his wings and fly.
Yet he preferred his cage.
The wide world might have been his had he known how to use it, but he was not ready for that; he would have perished of cold had I let him out into the wintry snow.
Let those who would travel the Mystic Path remember this: Earth Consciousness is an illusion and limitation. When it frets us, like a little cage, our chance for greater freedom comes.
But when a larger cage is offered---when we obtain Dhyana---let us not rest there thinking ourselves free. The door is open, Samadhi lies beyond, and beyond that, when we are ready for it, the Real Freedom, Nirvana.
O Lady of the Stars, let me not content till I penetrate the ultimate bars and am Free---One with the Infinitely Great as with the Infinitely Small.

XII. The Invisible Foot Prints

Long have I roamed the Earth delighting in the Good, the Beautiful and the True; ever seeking the spots where these seem to be most Perfect.
There is joy in this wandering among the flowers of life, but Thy Joy, O Beloved, is to be desired above all.
Now I seek a resting place, I am set upon a new Quest, to Worship at Thy feet.
For it is written of Thee: "Bending down, a lambent flame of blue, all touching, all penetrant, her lovely hands upon the black earth, and her lithe body arched for love, and her soft feet not hurting the little flowers."
Oh! That I might discover Thine Invisible Footprints upon the Earth and there come to the Understanding of Thy Being, O Beloved.

XIII. The Finger Tips

Or, it may be, O Beloved, I shall discover the imprints of Thy finger tips amid the flowers or upon the Black Earth.
Hath not Nemo a Garden that he tendeth? Doth he not also labour in the Black Earth?
Who knoweth when Thy hands may grasp me and draw me up into Thine arms, there to nestle at Thy breast, to feed upon the Milk of the Stars?
Beloved, verily this tending of the Garden of the World---although the labor may seem heavy---leadeth to a Great Reward. As Thou hast said: "Certainty, not faith, while in life upon death, rest, ecstasy." Nor dost Thou demand aught in sacrifice.
What do the Bhaktis know of Love? They see the Beloved everywhere.
But when I am one with Thee, O Beloved, I shall not see Thee, for I shall know Theee as Thou art.

XIV. The Well of Stars

I know a hidden well of clearest water. Naught but the coping of delicate pink onyx is visible until the secret spring be touched.
Then beware! For above the entrance hangs a fiery sword.
Few find this Well or know its Secret; there are but two roads leading thereto.
From the broad Mountain summit we may search the slopes for a vision of the Woodland Delta where grow the Trees of Eternity, or we may journey through the Valley between the Ivory Hills---if we fear not the purple shadows and the black pit-fall.
From Thee we came; to Thee may we return, O Well of Living Stars!

XV. The Icicles of Isis

It hath been written how the Old King dreamed of his banished peacock, entombed in a palace of ice, who cried: "The Icicles of Isis are falling on my head."
Thus it is with those who are banished to the Palace of the Moon---for the Word of Sin is Restriction.
Oh! Lady of the Starry Heavens, let me not become frozen at the touch of the cold Veil of Isis. For the Moon is but the dead reflector of the Sun, and He but the youngest of Thy Children of Light.
Let me lift Thy Peacock Veil of a Million Starry Eyes, O Beloved!
Show Thy Star Splendour, O Nuit; bid me within Thine house to dwell!

XVI. Purple Mill

The delicate purple mist streams up from the hills: I watch and wait for the meaning of it all.
Sometimes it seems like the incense smoke of Aspiration ascending towards the Sun---giver of Light, Life, Love and Liberty to the Children of Earth.
But the Sun is going down behind the Mountains, and Thy Starry Lamps glow in the Sky.
Is not the Lamp above the Altar a symbol of the Desire of the Higher to draw up the lower to Itself?
So, O Lady of Heaven, I liken the Mist to the life-breath of Souls who pant for Thee here below.
And I remember Thy words:
Above, the gemmed azure is
The naked splendour of Nuit;
She bends in ecstacy to kiss
The secret ardours of Hadit.
The winged globe, the starry blue,
Are mine, O Ankh-af-na-khonsu!
I, too, would ascend as a delicate purple mist that steams up from the Hills. Art Thou not all Pleasure and Purple?

XVII. The Infinite Within

I would that I were as the feminine counterpart of Thee, O Beloved; then would I draw the Infinite within.
Yet since Thy Pure Being must ever be more refined than this body of mine I should interpenetrate every part of Thee with my living flesh.
Thus, O Beloved, should we enter into a new and more complete embrace: not as of earth wherein the male uniteth with the female by means of the physical organs of love, but with every atom of my being close pressed to every atom of Thine---within and without.
Then, O beloved, would I cry unto the Lord of the Primum Mobile to teach me the Art of the Whirling Motion of Eternity.
Thus, whirling within Thee, our never-ending nuptial feast shall be celebrated, and a new System of Revolving Orbs be brought to birth.
Ah! the shrill cry of Ecstacy of that Refined Rapture---the Orgasm of the Infinite Within.

XVIII. The Rainbow

As I sat in the shelter of the forest glade, my eye caught the multi-coloured gleam of diamonds. I looked again; the Sun rays were playing upon the dew which clung to a little curved twig.
It seemed like a tiny rainbow of promise.
Then, while I watched in wonder, a small grey spider bridged the arch of the bow with his silken thread.
Ah! My Beloved, thus, too, hath the Spider of Destiny woven his silken rope from extreme to extreme of the Great Rainbow of Promise.
Fate hath fitted me as an Arrow to the String of Destiny in the bow of the Sun.
But Whose Hand shall draw that Mighty Bow, O Beloved, and send me upon fleet wings to my resting place within Thine Heart?

XIX. Dropped Dew

As I came from tending the Rose Garden and was about to return to my humble shelter, my eyes caught the gleam of dropped dew like a tiny trail along the path.
It was very early; the Sun had not yet re-arisen; the Stars still twinkled faintly in the sky.
Who could have come before me to the Garden?
I followed the trail of dew, stooping down so that I saw in each crystal drop the reflection of a tiny star.
Thus came I to my lady's chamber; she it was who carrying roses had left this silvery thread as a clue to her hiding place.
When I found her, her eyes were closed, as she pressed the fragrant the pink blossoms to her white breast.
Then did I bury my face in the blossoms and I saw not her eyes when she opened them in wonder.
Thus, too, would I follow the Star-trail of Dropped Dew, ere the re-arisen Sun hides Thee from me, O My Beloved!
Thus would I come to Thee and bury my face in Thy Breast amid the Roses of Heaven.
Nor should I dare to look into Thine eyes, having discovered Thy secret---the Dew of Love---the Elixir of Life.

XX. Twilight

Twilight... and in a few brief moments the Stars will begin to peep. I will await Thee, here amid the heather, O Beloved.
I wait... no stars appear for a mist has stolen up from the foot of the mountains.
Thus I waited for a sight of Thy Star Body till the cold damp mist of suppresed emotion chilled my being and my reason returned.
The woman stood girt with a sword before me. Emotion was overcome by clarity of perception. Then did I remember Thy words: "The Khabs is in the Khu not the Khu in the Khabs. Worship then the Khabs and behold my light shed over ye."
Thus turned I my thoughts within, so that I became concentrated upon the Khabs---the Star of mine inmost being. Then did Thy Light arise as a halo of rapture, and I came a little to lie in Thy bosom.
But I offered one particle of dust---and I lost all in that hour.
Such is the Mystery of Her who demandest naught in sacrifice.
The twilight is returned.

XXI. The Dog Star

Wisdom hath said: "Be not animal; refine thy rapture! The canst thou bear more joy!"
I have been like an unleashed hound before Thee, O Beloved. I have striven towards Thee and Thou seest in me only the Dog Star.
Yet will I not fall into the Pit called Because, there to perish with the dogs of reason. There is no reason in me; I seek Understanding, O Mother of Heaven.
Thus, with my face buried in the black earth, do I turn my back upon Thee. I will refine my rapture.
So Thou mayest behold me as I am, and so Thou shalt Understand at last, O Beloved; for in reverse Thou readest this DOG aright.
Hast Thou not said: "There is none other?"

XXII. Pot-pouri

The roses are falling. This is the night of the full moon whereon the children of Sin attend the Sacred Circle.
Therein they will sit divided---but not for love's sake---for they know Thee not---O Beloved. Into the Elements, the fiery, the watery, the airy and the earthly Signs are they divided when they gather at the Full Moon within the forest.
I wandered down the deep shadowy glade, there I espied a tiny sachet of pot-pouri, dropped---maybe---from the streaming girdle of one of the maidens.
Tenderly I raised it. Its perfume is like unto the perfume of her I love. She, too, perhaps, has heard the call of the moon and is even now on her way to the secret tryst.
But hast Thou not said: "Let there be no difference made among you between any one thing and any other thing; for thereby cometh hurt."
What matter then the name of the maiden? What matter the flowers of which it is composed?
Yet dare I not burn this incense unto Thee, O Beloved, because of Thine hair, the Trees of Eternity.
Oh! Little sachet of pot-pouri, thou hast reminded me of her I love, for the roses are falling, it is the night of the Full Moon and the children of Sin gather to attend the Sacred Circle.

XXIII. Red Swansdown

It hath been told how Parzival shot and brought down the Swan of Ecstacy as it winged over the Mountain of the Grail.
But there is within the archives another story, unheard by the ears of men.
From the breast of the Eternal Swan floated one downy feather, steeped in blood. This did the youngest and least worthy of the Knights hide tenderly in his bosom till he concealed it within the hard pillow of his lonely couch.
Night after night that holy pillow became softer; sweeter and sweeter were his dreams. And one night---the night of the crowning of Parzival---he was granted the Great Vision wherein the Stars became like flecks of Swansdown upon the Breast of Heaven, each living and throbbing, for they were steeped in Blood.
Then did every atom of his being become a Star racing joyfully through the Great Body of the Lady of Heaven. Thus in sweet sleep came he into the Great Beyond.
Grant unto me Thy Pillow of Blood and Ecstacy, O Beloved!

XXIV. Passing Clouds

A dark night: Not a star is visible, but presently the moon shines out through a rift in the clouds. And I remember, "The sorrows are but shadows, they pass and are done, but there is that which remains."
Yet is the moon but illusion.
A dull day: but presently the Sun is seen as the clouds are dispelled by His light.
Is He that which remains?
Night once more: the Sun is lost to sight, only the moon reminds me of His presence. The clouds scud swiftly across the Sky and disappear.
Thy Star Body is visible, O Beloved; all the sorrows and shadows have passed and there is that which remains.
When clouds gather, let me never forget Thee, O Beloved!

XXV. The Coiled Serpent

Thus have I heard:
The ostrich goeth swiftly; with ease could he outstrip those who covet his tail-feathers, yet when danger cometh he burieth his head in the sand.
The tortoise moveth slowly and when embarrased he stoppeth, withdrawing into his own shell; yet he passeth the hare.
The hare sleepeth when he should be swiftly moving; he runneth in his dreams thinking himself at the goal.
But the Coiled Serpent hath wisdom, for he hideth his tail and it is not coveted; he raiseth his head and fears not; he moveth slowly like the tortoise, yet withdraweth not; he nestles close to the hare, darting his tongue with swiftness, yet falleth not asleep by the wayside.
Would that I had the Wisdom of the Coiled Serpent, O Beloved, for Thou hast said: "Put on the wings, arouse the coiled splendour within you: come unto me!"

XXVI. Love and Unity

Twenty-six is the numeration of the Inneffable Name, but It concealeth Love and Unity.
The Four-lettered Name implieth Law, yet it may be divided for love's sake; for Love is the law.
The Four-lettered Name is that of the elements, but it may be divided for the chance of Union; for there is Unity therein.
There is but One Substance and One Love and while these be twenty-six they One through thirteen which is but a half thereof.
Thus do I play with numbers who would rather play with One and that One Love.
For Thou hast said: "There is naught that can unite the divided but love!"
And is not Achad Ahebah?

XXVII. The Riddle

What is that which cometh to a point yet goeth in a circle?
This, O Beloved, is a dark saying, but Thou hast said: "My colour is black to the blind, but the blue and gold are seem of the seeing. Also I have a secret glory for them that love me."
And Hadit hath declared: "There is a veil; that veil is black."
I would that I could tear aside the veil, O Beloved, for seeing Thee as Thou art, I might see Thee everywhere, even in the darkness that cometh to a point yet goeth in a circle.
For Hadit, the core of every star, says "It is I that go," and Thou, Mother of the Stars, criest "To me! To me!"
Resolve me the Riddle of Life, O Beloved, for loving Thee I would behold Thy Secret Glory.

XXVIII. Sayings

Isis hath said: "I am all that was and that is and that shall be, and no mortal hath lifted my veil."
Who cares what is back of the moon?
Jehovah showed his back unto Moses, saying: "No man hath seen my face at any time."
Who cares to face the elements?
Hadit hath said: "I am life and the giver of life; therefore is the knowledge of me the knowledge of death."
Who cares to know death?
But Thou, O Beloved, hath said: "I give unimaginable joys on earth, certainty, not faith, while in life upon death, peace unutterable, rest, ecstacy; nor do I demand aught in sacrifice."
Who would not long to invoke Thee under Thy Stars, O Beloved?

XXIX. The Falling Star

Falling, falling, falling! Thus fall the Rays from Thy Body of Stars upon this tiny planet, O Beloved! Innumerable streams of Light like Star-rain upon the black earth.
Since every man and every woman is a star, their lives are like unto streams of light concentrated upon every point in Space.
As I lay with arms out-stretched, my bare body shining like ivory in the darkness. my scarlet abbai flung wide, mine eyes fixed upon the star-lit Heaven; I felt that I, too, was falling, falling, falling, in an ecstacy of fear and love into the void abyss of space.
Then did I remember that Thou art continuous. Beneath, above, around me art Thou. And lo, from a falling star I became as a comet wheeling in infinite Circles, each at a different angle, till my course traced out the Infinite Sphere that is the Symbol of Thee, O Beloved.
Then did I aspire to find the Centre of All.
And even now I am falling, falling, falling.

XXX. Justice

I am a Fool, O Beloved, and therefore am I One or Nought as the fancy takes me.
Now am I come to Justice, so that I may be All or Naught according to the direction of vision.
No Breath may stir the Feather of Truth, therefore is Justice ALone in L. Yet the Ox-goad is Motion and Breath Matter if it be called the Ox which is also A.
How foolish are these thoughts, which are but as the Sword in the hand of Justice. They are as unbalanced as the Scales that stir not, being fixed in the figure of Law above the Court House of a great City.
But Thou hast said: "Love is the law, love under will."
And Love is the Will to Change and Change is the Will to Love.
Even in the stern outline of the Scales of Justice do I perceive the Instrument of Love, and in the Life Sentence, the Mystery of Imprisonment in Thy Being, O Beloved!

XXXI. Not

Three Eternities are passed... I have outstripped a million Stars in my race across Thy Breast---The Milky Way.
When shall I come to the Secret Centre of Thy Being?
Time, thou thief, why dost thou rob the hungry babe? Space, thou hadst almost deceived me.
O Lady Nuit, let me not confound the space-marks!
Then, O Beloved, Thy Word came unto me, as it is written: "All touching; All penetrant."
Thus left I Time and Space and Circumstance, and every Star became as an atom in my Body, when it became Thy Body. Now never shall I be known, for it is I that go.
But Thou, O Beloved, though Thou art infinitely Great, art Thou not energized by the Invisible Point---the Infinitely Small?
A Million Eternities are Present, Deem not of Change; This is the Here and Now, and I am
