Recycling the good stuff....
Just a little blurb about yesterday's Christmas card in my tree...well, actually.... the several cards in the tree...every year. Yesterday's was one from my sister one year ....
I hate to throw away pretty cards... especially those with a bit of bling and also some special meaning. They are perfect for that dark spot...or that wonky spot or ... well, anywhere in the tree actually, where you want a bit of "something" that the balls and other decorations just aren't providing....
This one I just cut around the edge of the gold trimmed centre of a lovely card.... it stays in the Christmas decorations box....been there about 6 years now.... love it...
Store bought cards are horribly expensive and some are perfect for this... and... those beautiful handmade cards? .. well, they 're just too special to chuck in the garbage.
With some, I save the whole front of a card...some, I just save the middles...or maybe only a particular piece. Yesterday's ... the whole front...cut with deckle edged scissors...and strategically placed in the tree.. lights shining just so onto it.
You can make labels or tags with the smaller pieces... or use them on your own handmade cards next year... or... well, I am sure you can think up other uses for them as well. I have a box full of them for when I think of other things to do with them. It doesn't take up any space at all in my big storage area... just stack it with my other 4 or 5 boxes of things. The origami papers (oh, yes...don't forget...save all the beautiful foil type wrapping papers too...for those!! (they only need 3 pieces of 3 X 3 inches each) If you don't want to make any...save it for me! Send me a few bits and pieces in a card envelope.... hey! I could make you a few and send them back to you next year.... hahahha... oh, yeh...what else?
There is a box of walnut mice....another box of whole cards for making boxes... some boxes of greenery for making some table centres and arrangements.. and, ... oh, alright, alright....... I admit it. I have several more boxes ...of all sorts of things for Christmas and other crafts. Sigh...
Must p.u.r.g.e. Maybe it's time to give away some of the stuff I just know I'm not going to use anymore.... wish I knew locals who want to do some crafting....
here are the links to last year's card posts...
Better get a move on... today I'm making soup from the tiny chicken carcass... foccaccia bread to go with soup for supper...another 'nog loaf....and oh, ... better do some treadmill. The Christmas goodies are beginning to show...around my middle.....

more cards...
I refuse to be done with Christmas already... I'm still playing with photos and cards...and little mice and... oh, origami ornies made from salvaged wrapping papers.....
Save the fronts of the cards... or even parts of them .......
They look great placed in various spots in your tree....
this Victorian montage from a great one my sister sent me years ago... hmmm... almost sounds like she sent it to me in Victorian times...hahahha.....yeh, I'm old...but not that ancient...
I cut just the center out of this one... leaving on the gold trim...
this one is silvered.... and looks amazing in front of a little light... almost like a little lit painting...
Oops... where'd this come from? ...oh.... I know...it's a bit of summer colour for a wintery day.....

Better late than never....
A pretty little box...
Made from a pretty card.
I hate throwing away the cards that I deem special... cards that I can recycle... or repurpose... or even just clip out a centre or a verse or pieces of trim.. to use in other little projects or just to save for who-knows-what.. or for some day... when I find a use for it.
They only take up a small box and I have storage room for that.. so I ain't tossin'.
If anybody is interested, and you haven't already turfed all the beautiful cards..here is the method.

Carefully tear or cut the card in two at the fold.
With a firm straight edge... line it up to corners diagonal from each other, and draw a light pencil line near the middle of the card ... about an inch long to make sure the other line finds it.
Line up the other two diagonal corners and draw the other little pencil line.
Fold the long sides up to the center of the X and make a nice crease..run your straight edge ruler along it if necessary. Some card stock is stiffer than others...and some is just too stiff to make a nice edge at all.
Then, fold over the short edges to the center of the X as well. Now, you will have folds on all four edges that meet ...
Cut, with scissors, in along the longest fold to where it meets the short fold...
hmmm... that was almost easier to see than to explain..but, I hope you get my drift...
Now, you have the two short ends to slot one over the other as you bring up the long sides..
The middle tongue of the short side becomes the outside piece and is a bit longer so that it actually folds over the two shorter pieces. You can tape or glue it down and they all stay together nicely.
If it is an especially nice card...and the writing is .. uhm... everywhere... you can always glue a light weight piece of coloured or patterned paper over the whole inside of the card before you begin cutting.. so it will become a very special box.
If there is no writing near the greeting... it is sometimes nice to see it on the inside of the bottom of the box. Again... you could always glue on some paper in a matching or complementary colour to cover the whole inside of the bottom of the box and make it look special. If you leave it... just erase the cross you made with the pencil.... and enjoy your simple but fun, little repurposed box. For today...I thought I would just show the folding part.... hopefully before you threw out all the cards.
It's like a little wrapped canvas painting.... and recipients always seem quite taken with them. The perfect size for a tiny needlefelted bear... or some handmade earrings..or a brooch... or.. well, ..sky is the limit for us crafters isn't it?....
Hope you try a few....
A Very Happy New Year to you all ... here's to more fun in 2010 !!!

It's Christmas Eve !!!
I'm hanging out, not doing much... a bit of shopping just to say I was there in the crazy last days... I got some 'jammies.... and we're enjoying some of the Christmas goodies I baked and some the neighbours brought for us... ...
The tree is lovely ...I don't do much decorating, but do love a beautiful, sparkly tree. We used to have a tiny, barely 5 foot tree ... but two years ago finally got a slightly taller one at nearly 7 feet. This year we had to put it in a different spot because we got a new chair and it usurped the old Christmas tree space... luckily it fits (barely) under the beam....
I've had fun taking pics of several ornaments and pretty lit areas ... ... almost wish I could leave it up all year..... but then I suppose it would get dusty...wouldn't look so sparkly... and, I wouldn't think it so lovely. I'll just have a look back on my blog instead .... at posts from this week.... and especially today.... here are a few for you.....
there are little birdies in my tree...
Santa is there too....
a little toy train....
miniature snowmen on tiny clothes pegs... I thought I might try making some myself.... a bit slow on the uptake....
more birdies....
lovely cards saved over the years...
a woodland sprite with his violin...
a baby hazelnut mouse in a walnut shell... these I do make...they are such fun..
This is a great Santa that I took a pic of at a large nursery that has a great Christmas display each year.... it's almost time..........

It isn't over yet !!
I am talking about Christmassy stuff when I say that. ....... and because of Kari and Kijsa.... I decided to do yet another post about cards.
There are just soooo many beautiful cards. No way I can throw them in the garbage. For years I threw some away but just saved others that I really liked, even if only to look at the following years. But .. now...I recycle them in many ways. These are the perfect few days to do it ... sort of some down time between Christmas and the New Year. Look at some of the great cards and decide how to save them instead of chucking them. Even if you don't want them... you may have a friend like me and you could always ask if they want your cards (along with all of the quality wrapping papers they will be tossing out..but that is another post!! ) arrgggh... just not enough typing and picture taking time, along with the "doing". LOL
I use them in my recipe/album binder. I also use portions of them.. embellish or not.. add ribbons, cords..etc..or just place them in the tree too. Or how about making some cute little boxes?

Making little Christmas card boxes has been a fun thing for kids and adults alike .... for such a long time ... that perhaps they will be new to you!
Here is one of my favourites. I display it each year in a sleigh with some of my stuffed bears. Each card yields a different size. They are a perfect size for my tiny needle felted bears.

Even the verse ends up in the proper place on the bottom of the box. If nobody wrote their names too close to it... use it. If they did scribble plenty and you don't want to see it... use a glue stick and place some lightweight paper (any colour you choose..) directly on top of it to hide it and make a pretty bottom half of the box.

Look....even the outside of the bottom looks kinda classy... Carlton card no less. lol
Place a straight edge or ruler from corner to corner lengthwise and make a little pencil mark near the center of the card. You can erase it later.
Then place straight edge on the width portion... corner to corner...and do the same.
In the center you then have a little X. Fold the length towards the center marked by the center of the X....press firmly and run your fingernail or the ruler along the folded edge to crease nicely
.
Do the same with the length. Then cut with scissors in as far as the corner made by both folds in all four corners. That will be the depth of the box.

Fold in the corner tabs to meet each other on one end of the box...then fold up the end flap and you will see that the end has a small overlap..just fold it over and crease it well. That holds the corner tabs in position. If it is stiff cardstock.. it will hold its position...but if not.. a bit of glue or double sided tape under it will work. If the picture in the center of fairly large card is all you want..cut off to that. Although there is a size at which it gets too small to be of much use. ...and awkward to work with. Once you have made a few...you will be pretty good at making everything look exactly as you like. Check where on the picture your folds will be so that you know what your finished box will look like. I am sure you will have several cards that are not worth saving... they can be the practice cards for your first efforts.
If the verse portion is messy with writing... but you want to have one. ..... clip one from another card to stick into position.

How I love red cardinals ... the perfect splash of festive colour in a scene of winter white.
This is a portion of a card that will now have some silver, red and other colours and textures added .... for use as a gift tag. Often I like to add a few gift tags or tree decorations in my gift boxes the following year.

This will make a beautiful card to use as a decoration for the tree.

Save all or a portion of any verse you like for use inside other cards you make ... to glue inside a tiny box.. or use on gift tags.... so many uses. glue it onto other card stock or beautiful paper and glue again onto any card or decoration.

My neighbour knows how I love hand made. Her husband works with a lady who makes cards and purchased some boxes of 5 that she had made this year. I was lucky enough to receive this one. The little tree actually has beads inserted into punched out holes for each size... then there is a second tree under the one you see....separated by tiny strips of foam.. to allow part of each bead to sit below the surface. On the surface it appears that each bead is flat and the back side of it inside the tree branches... ... til you check it out much closer.

What a wonderful day it was...
Sometimes I think I miss the antics of cats ... but only sometimes..... lol....naaahhhhh ....
But, in reality I love when the tree stays the same for the whole few weeks it is up. And, it even stays up! Bonus.
There are so many beautiful cards. Love to get them... hate to throw them away. I recycle cards in several ways. Sometimes, when I get a particularly beautiful one ... I save the best part of it to use in a dark area in the tree .... or just to tuck in behind some lights and sparkly decorations to add a whole new dimension to the overall beauty of the tree. It is yet another tradition I suppose. And...I always know who sent it... often there is even some handwriting on the reverse. It is fun to see them each year when I unpack the decorations. Reminisce about the sender.... marvel at the art work.
