Gatha - Gatha LP

On the heels of Popol Vuh, here comes Gatha, consisting of Haare mastermind Ilkka Vekka, and Teemu Markkula of Aum Xul (Ilkka also plays in that). Heavy, meditative, and levitating. 2025 LP on Heavy Meditation.

The Mickey Guitar Band ‎– From The Beaches

Continuing where the album with Gerogerigegege left off, Mickey Guitar Band offer yet another hazy and zoned-out piece of acid-drenched psychedelic and kosmische rock. Yeah! 2019 cd on Bam Balam.

Nimh + Maurizio Bianchi ‎– Secluded Truths CD

Not as haunting and apocalyptic as most MB releases, this one is closer to a more esoteric ambient approach with nods to space and kosmische music and very slightly new age, albeit with a few pinches of noise. 2005 cd on Silentes Minimal.

St James Infirmary - A Sound Is A Sound cdr

I thought St James Infirmary, the project of G.W. Lang played mostly in looped ambient styles, but this is a real change, and an excellent one at that. On this superb cdr you get lysergic 1970s psychedelic/kosmische rock, with equal parts Can (the voice kind of reminds me of Damo Suzuki at times, and insistent motorik rhythms prevail) and Pink Floyd-Meddle era, with a touch of post-punk and garage. On this one, it seems that St James Infirmary has turned into a quartet and it all seems to have been recorded live. I hope that SJI continue making music in that vein, although I've already expressed my fondness for other recordings of his. Oh, and the cover kind of reminds me of Andy Warhol's "Mao." 2019 cdr on Wormhole World, whose bandcamp is always a place to find new exciting releases to spend money on and support.

The Mickey Guitar Band ‎– Mickey Guitar tape

Their other release (minus Gerogerigegege, who, however, is the recording engineer here) is even more heavily focused on the guitar; side 1 is 27 minutes of ambient guitar effects of ambient nature and even similar to 1980s science documentaries. Again I find a Frippertronics element here. Side 2 is a live recording of the full band with a much grittier sound than in the LP; I get a jam/improvisation/noise feeling over the guitar solos that kinda akin to Les Rallizes Denudes and Taj-Mahal Travellers and slightly Can. Good shit. 2017 tape on Captain Trip Records.

The Mickey Guitar Band Feat. The Gerogerigegege ‎– From The Deep LP

From the moment I learned of the existence of this, I was wavering on whether I should buy it due to the price, but eventually I did. Second kind-of-mass outing of Gerogerigegege after the amazing out-of-nowhere return of Moenai Hai is this collaboration lp with Japanese psych rock band The Mickey Guitar Band. Gero is listed as playing percussion, which is not that audible actually, as well as handling the production. So what we got here is psychedelic rock heavily focused on guitar solos combined with fizzy, levitating ambient pieces generated mainly by guitar effects akin to 1970s Robert Fripp. I'd say this sounds like a mix between Hawkwind and Popol Vuh, but don't take my word. It ain't that Gero-weird, but it's a good psychedelic record with a nightly sound ideal for night drives and such. 2017 LP on Psych.KG.

Flamingo Creatures ‎– Flauschi tape

One of the absolutely best psychedelic bands at work at the moment, the German duo of Flaming Creatures construct a hazy world of amazing sonic experimentation based on violins, guitars and loops, mixing kosmische psychedelia, gamelan type bliss and the best and most nightmarish elements of early Throbbing Gristle. Must listen. 2017 tape on Beartown.

Silvester Anfang ‎– Spontane Opnames 1: Anti-Metal Politie-Interventie tape

The most glorious goat caressers of Flanders offer another set of ritual psych, with a drone-space-bell-clanging levitating hymn on the first side, and a bass-heavy rhythmic evil bootsy-dancing anthem that degenerates in random cymbal smashing, wah doodling and high-pitched screaming. 2007 tape on Meudiamorte.

Coil - Queens of the Circulating Library cd

I remember having bought this cd during the summer after I had finished high school, trying to calm down after my college entry exams and waiting to see if I would go to the university. I already loved Coil, they were one of the very very first experimental/noise/ambient groups I had discovered, as I mainly listened to hardcore punk and grindcore at the time. So when I bought this my parents had gone on holiday and I was home alone and it was scorching hot outside. So I started listening to this and turned on the air-conditioning machine at full blast. The feeling of machine-produced cold and the psychedelic trance-like ambient music just made me so blissful. This cd totally belongs in 1970's Germany, Florian Fricke or Klaus Schulze would have been totally proud to release this. Sleazy isn't playing on this one, just John Balance and Thighpaulsandra, plus sandra's mother reciting. 2000 cd on Eskaton.

Raising Holy Sparks - Old Times & End Times tape (Sloow Tapes)

Another great tape by Sloow Tapes, this one is an Irish project headed by multi-instrumentalist David Collohan, and features among others Alison O'Donnell of the legendary 1960s-1970s folk band Mellow Candle. The tape presents predominantly dreamy psychedelic material close to floating kosmische music, mainly Popol Vuh, as well as modern-day masters like Natural Slow Buildings and Eternal Tapestry, as well as mournful acoustic folk numbers played on the guitar and accordion. Truly heartbreaking music for the cold sunrises of winter.

Nackt Insecten - Quantum Odyssey LP & Quantum Odyssey II: Corridor Voyager CD

The sadly defunct Nackt Insecten was the ideal mix of noisy drone and kosmische bliss. Imagine flying stoned over Aztec temples not on carpets but on slowed-down F-16. Here's the 2008 lp Quantum Odyssey on Blackest Rainbow, and its companion cd Quantum Odyssey II: Corridor Voyager, released in 2009 on Memoirs of An Aesthete.
