FREE Felt Tampongate Ornament Tutorial & Happy Tampon Embroidery Pattern

This Coronation-inspired project definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea but the idea popped into my head and I simply could not resist making it!! Sorry!! :)

Sew a very silly, VERY CHEEKY ornament to celebrate the Coronation, the classic Royal scandal that was Tampongate, and the relationship between our King and Queen* 

 

 

(*I think The Tampon Conversation is actually a very cute and funny example of how well suited they are for each other!) 

As well as templates and instructions for sewing a Tampongate ornament, I've also included an embroidery pattern version of the design which fits neatly in a 3 inch embroidery hoop.

There's also an embroidery pattern of a cute little tampon on its own, and of course you can leave off the felt crown and just make a felt tampon ornament for any occasion!

 

A little felt tampon ornament would be fun to stitch as a first period present, to fundraise to help women and girls in period poverty, or just to help promote more open and relaxed conversations around the topic of periods. 

And the happy tampon pattern would look very cute stitched on a pouch for storing your period supplies!

Felt Crown Ornament Tutorial for the Coronation of King Charles III (& Coronation Embroidery Patterns!)

Sew a sparkly felt crown ornament to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles III!

I've had so much fun sewing these little crowns, and I hope you guys will too. They'd be fun to sew over the Coronation weekend, or for your tree this Christmas as a memento of 2023.

The design is based on St Edward's Crown - part of the British Crown Jewels, and the crown which will be used at the exact moment of the King's coronation during the ceremony at Westminster Abbey. 

The printable PDF tutorial includes the templates and step-by-step instructions with lots of photos and helpful hints and tips.

It's now available as an instant download in my Etsy shop, and I've also added it to my Patreon pattern library.

If you don't want to sew your own crown but would love one as a keepsake you're in luck, as I'm selling the handmade ornaments too!

As well as the felt crowns tutorial I've shared some Coronation-themed embroidery patterns over on Patreon, which would also make great colouring pages (perfect for making some DIY decorations!). 

There's a Coronation Crown Embroidery Pattern - the full design with the lettering "The Coronation of King Charles III, 6th May 2023", designed to fit in a 7 inch embroidery hoop, and the crown on its own if you'd like to just stitch that or add your own custom lettering. 

I've also included a couple of pages with repeats of the crown design so you can easily print out lots of crowns for some group colouring-in sessions or to make a paper crown garland.

There's also a Cute Coronation Embroidery Pattern with a sweet little lion and unicorn. I've included the little union flag heart as a separate pattern, and repeated lots of times on the final page so you can easily print and make some DIY bunting. The heart would look fab stitched on felt to make a little ornament - just add the date of the Coronation on the back to turn it into a memento of the day.

A Portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, Felt Ornament Tutorial

Sew a felt portrait of the Queen, to commemorate her long life and reign!

 

This step by step project includes templates, instructions, and several text options for the embroidery - including "Thank you, Ma'am, for everything" for the Paddington fans among you. 

Don't want to make an ornament? Sew the finished portrait onto a larger piece of felt or fabric and frame it instead.

How To: Embroidered Heart Hoop

Time for one last heart-themed tutorial before Valentine's Day rolls round next week...

Today's project is a simple embroidery pattern (based on my felt heart brooch design from a couple of years ago) you can personalise with initials. Stitch it as a Valentine's or anniversary gift for the one you love, or as a wedding present for a special couple.

I've framed my heart inside one of the mini 3inch embroidery hoops (available from my shops) and I'll be adding a loop of red ribbon to the top so it can be hung as an ornament - it's actually going to be a house-warming gift for a couple who hopefully don't read my blog! But you can, of course, stitch your heart onto anything you fancy.

To make the embroidered felt hoop pictured...

1) Print the heart pattern at the bottom of this post, and draw on the initials you want. Then trace the pattern onto greaseproof/baking paper with a marker pen.

2) Stretch your felt in an embroidery hoop (I used a 5inch hoop for this step). Pin the baking paper in position in the centre of the hoop, tack it in place with long stitches and remove the pins.

3) Stitch the design. I used backstitch and half the number of strands in stranded white embroidery thread / floss.

4) Remove the tacking stitches and carefully tear away the paper from the stitched design, using a pin to remove any small or fiddly pieces. Then remove the felt from the hoop.

5) Carefully position the felt in a smaller (3inch) embroidery hoop, ensuring you get the heart as central as possible, then tighten the hoop

6) Trim the excess felt from around the edge of the hoop, leaving some to fold over in the next step.

7) Gradually fold and glue the felt into the back of the hoop. For extra neatness, cut out a circle the same size as the inner hoop and glue this to the back to hide your workings.

8) Place a small, clean jar inside the hoop to hold everything in place while the glue dries...

... and you're done!

Felt Ornament How-To #1: Stars and Hearts

I just couldn't wait to begin these tutorials, so here's the first one to get you started...

You will need...

A sewing needle
Some pins
Assorted colours of felt (at least 2 colours for this project)
Matching sewing thread
Co-ordinating narrow ribbon
Sewing/fabric scissors

1. First cut out your pattern. You can use my pattern sheet or draw your own simple shapes (cookie cutters make great templates).

2. Pick your colours. This ornament is based on simple contrasting colours: I chose red and white but you could pick any two to match your Christmas theme or make an assortment in lots of bright shades.

3. Pin the pattern to your first colour and cut it out.

 

4. Remove the pattern, put it to one side and pin the felt shape to the second colour - remember to leave space to cut a border round it! Then, using a contrasting colour sewing thread (I used red to match my background colour) sew the shape to the backing felt.

 

 This stitching will act as a decorative detail so try to get the stitches as even as possible. If you're worried about it you can always use a matching thread like I did here:

 

5. Now remove the pin and carefully cut round your shape, leaving a border of the backing colour to "frame" it: I cut mine quite narrow, but a wider border makes for a bigger bolder ornament. Remember: if you're not sure it's always best to cut a bit extra, as you can always trim some off if you're not happy with it at this stage.

 

6. You now have the front of your ornament. Use it as a template to cut out another piece of your backing felt the same size (this will be the back of the ornament).

7. Pick a piece of ribbon - I use simple narrow ribbons for my decorations but you could try wider pieces (the larger the ornament, the bigger the ribbon you can use) patterned ribbon, ricrac, or even knitting yarn or string: anything you're happy sewing with!

8. Cut a piece about 5 inches (12 cms) long. Fold it over to form a loop and sew the two cut ends to the inside of your backing piece of felt at the top like this:

 

When you put the front and back of your ornament together the messy ends of the ribbon should now be hidden between them. Use thread that matches your backing felt to help hide your stitches.

9. Now you're ready to sew your ornament together. Pin the front and the back so they're exactly how you want them, with the ribbon emerging from the top. Then, starting from the ribbon sew all around the outside "border" in matching thread, as close to the central shape as possible (again, this keeps your stitches hidden) ... and you've finished!

 

 VARIATIONS: As discussed above, you can use different colours and ribbons to great effect with this simple pattern. Any simple shape can be used - dig around in your cookie cutter drawer to see what you can find, or sketch your own patterns. I've added an 8 point star template to the pattern sheet for you to try. You could also make larger and more colourful ornaments by adding extra layers - repeat stages 4, 5 & 6 to create more elaborate layered designs.
