Said to be taken from the late Jerry Moore’s copy (veteran Grateful Dead taper), this very good FM broadcast brings out the best in Dave Mason’s clean and biting guitar. Like many rockers who gained prominence in the ’60s, Mason’s resume is impressive and long - Traffic, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac, The Rolling Stones, Mama Cass Elliot and even Michael Jackson, to name a few.
Having just released the Split Coconut album in September 1975, Mason played only the title track from the album for this New Year’s Eve show and filled the set with some “golden oldies” such as Feelin’ Alright, All Along The Watchtower, Only You Know And I Know and Gimme Some Lovin’, a song whose riffs kind of foreshadow those on The Eagles’ Life In The Fast Lane.
Listening to this show, one realises that Mason did not receive as much recognition as a guitarist as he deserves and it’s good to know that Mason received his Outstanding Career Achievement Honor at the Media Interactive Conference in Hollywood on November 21. But that’s like a bonus. Guitar rock fans should check out Mason’s show if and when the man comes to town. Visit www.dave-mason.com for tour updates.
