BETH HART, JOE BONAMASSA - LIVE IN AMSTERDAM

The collaboration between soulful singer Beth Hart and popular blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa has been both critically-acclaimed and commercially successful. While their 2011 album Don't Explain laid a foundation and flitted on and off the blues chart for a couple years, their 2013 album Seesaw earned the pair a Grammy® nomination and still sits in the Top Ten. So, what do Beth and Joe do for an encore?

How about a live album? Better yet, a live album and a live DVD! No one has ever accused Joey Bones of not delivering for his fans, and on March 25, 2014 his J&R Adventures label will release the dynamic duo's Live In Amsterdam in three different formats. A live concert documentary featuring 22 songs, including such fan favorites from the two albums like "Sinner's Prayer," Etta James' classic "I'd Rather Go Blind," "Strange Fruit," "Nutbush City Limits," and the title track from Seesaw.

Against the backdrop of the beautiful, historic Koninklijk Theater Carre in Amsterdam, the performance wows with scorching soul covers from the duo's 2011 debut album Don't Explain and 2013 follow-up Seesaw, originally made famous by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Tom Waits, Ray Charles, Donnie Hathaway, Lucinda Williams, Bill Withers, Delaney & Bonnie, Buddy Miles, Tina Turner, Slackwax, Melody Gardot, Nina Simone, and more.

This project was born from what Hart, Bonamassa, and Bonamassa's long-time producer Kevin Shirley call a "crazy idea" to record a catalog of songs in a way that recalls the days when a band recorded live in the studio with little or no overdubs; the days when the vocalist was happy when a take was done regardless of personal performance.

"What we're trying to capture is an era of reaction and spontaneity – something that was a great inspiration for me as a budding musician," explained Bonamassa. "It's a bygone era in lieu of modern times and digital studio manipulation. We wanted to do the exact opposite of that for this live concert. There were no nets and what you hear is what was sung and played that night."

Track 7 was recorded live at The Generation Club , 52 West 8th Street, New York City, April 15, 1968. The Cafe Au Go Go show also included Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles, Herbie
Rich, James Tatum and Philip Wilson. The Generation Club show also included B.B. King, Elvin Bishop, Buzzy Feiten, Al Kooper, and Philip Wilson.

I grabbed this gem at a shop in New York City back in the mid 90's with my best friend,
'Rich G'. Tracks 1-6 were recorded live at the Cafe Au Go Go on March 17th 1968, 152
Bleeker Street, Greenwich Village, New York City. Track 7 was recorded live at The
Generation Club on April 15th 1968, 52 West 8th Street, New York City. The Cafe Au Go Go
show also included Paul Butterfield, Elvin Bishop, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles, Herbie
Rich, James Tatum, and Philip Wilson. The Generation Club also included B.B. King, Elvin
Bishop, Buzzy Feiten, Al Kooper, and Philip Wilson.

If you're not familiar with this recording, it can best be described as a bunch of
structured 'jams'.  If you're into lyrics, this one's NOT for you!!!  If you're into great
instrumentals, particularly electric guitar, JUMP ON THIS!!  The sound quality is very nice.
I'd rate the SQ as a solid EX, in my humble opinion.  Crowd noise can be heard at times, but
it's faint at most.  There are also a few fade-in/fade-outs, but almost hardly worth mentioning.

This is definitely one of the better sounding live performances with Jimi Hendrix I've heard.

Lastly- I normally wouldn't include a scan of the actual disc, but this one's too cool looking
to omit.  Hope you guys agree.  Thanks again to 'Alex D.' for the artwork scans.
