THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings

The Allman Brothers Band – The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings (2014)

Generally considered the career breakthrough, and some would even say pinnacle, of the Allman Brothers‘ career, the 1971 concert album At Fillmore East was a huge success for the band.
A landmark of classic rock, At Fillmore East, recorded over several nights in March 1971, captured the live intensity and almost psychic group interplay between the bandmembers, largely centered on the guitar tête-à-tête of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts. Also integral to the Georgia band’s sound were the bluesy, soul-inflected vocals and organ playing of Gregg Allman, on whose shoulders much of the band’s future would rest after the tragic death of his brother Duane in a motorcycle accident in October 1971, a mere four days after At Fillmore East was certified gold.
However, despite the group’s undeniably innovative mix of rock, country, blues, and jazz, it was producer Tom Dowd who helped craft the live sessions into a remarkably kinetic and timely album. Dowd, who had previously helmed the group’s second album, 1970's Idlewild South, skillfully edited the group’s various performances together, maximizing the best bits and, as in the case of “You Don’t Love Me,” combined the first section with the last section to form a concise, masterful take. The 2014 six-disc box set The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings brings together all of the unedited recordings the Allman Brothers made during their two-night, four-show stand at the Fillmore East. That means longtime fans get four versions of the band’s set opener, “Statesboro Blues,” as well as other cuts the group repeated each set. Thankfully, the Allman Brothers rarely played a song the same way twice, and every track here holds something surprising and unexpected to discover. Also included is the group’s June 1971 show closing out the Fillmore East for owner Bill Graham, who had decided to shut the venue down. Combine all of the music here, much previously unreleased, with John Lynskey’s heartfelt and informative liner notes detailing all of the concert drama, both on stage and off, and The 1971 Fillmore East Recordings ends up working as both a completist anthology and a joyful rock tribute.

ABOUT
Following years of modest regional success, the 1976 album Live Bullet, recorded live at Detroit's Cobo Hall, would catapult Bob Seger's career. It would also begin an astounding 5-year stretch where Seger and his Silver Bullet Band would dominate American radio and everything Seger touched seemingly turned to gold. The three studio albums to follow during this golden era, Night Moves, Stranger In Town and the number one Grammy Award wining Against The Wind, would each deliver numerous hits and many permanent staples of classic rock radio.

On Seger 's 1980 tour, he successfully made lightning strike twice by recording a sequel to Live Bullet. The result was Nine Tonight, originally released as a 2 LP set. This outstanding live album would truly capture Seger's special brand of heartland rock and the power and excitement of the Silver Bullet Band at its peak. Many consider this album the absolute best encapsulation of Seger's golden era (and that is not overlooking his Greatest Hits).

Decades later, journey back to the penultimate concert from the 1980 tour, when Seger and The Silver Bullet Band returned to their home stomping grounds at Detroit's Cobo Hall, presented here for the first time ever in it's unedited entirety! This recording is a terrific overview of Seger's peak era, from raunchy rockers to heartfelt ballads and everything in between, all performed with fire and passion. It all culminates in a second encore of "Rock And Roll Never Forgets" that smokes the studio recording before launching into an extended tribute to Chuck Berry and classic rock & roll, where the raw energy of this band and the chemistry between Seger and his audience is undeniable.

Note during the 1st set there are a couple of places in the first set between songs where it sounds like someone is sneezing into my microphones, but those were being played by someone onstage using a sampler.

S2T4(starting at 4:54)+S2T5+S2T6(up until 6:57) have additional EQ to boost the high end after my left mic was knocked out of proper placement by some yahoos who were partying it up and also yelling stupid stuff (some of it even slightly racist).  During the affected portions while those guys were being obnioxious I have pasted the right channel over the left and applied a 0.01 reverb to fill out the stereo imaging -- Unless you listen really closely it should be barely noticeable when the patches were made.

Additionally, I scrubbed some claps and whistles from the recording in S1T6(1 whistle), S1T8(1 yell, 2 whistles), S1T10(1 yell, 2 sections of talking), S1T14(1 whistle, 4 yells), S1T15(1 yell), S2T2(1 whistle), S2T8(1 whistle), S2T10(2 claps, 2 whistles), S2T17(1 clap, 2 whistles), S2T19(2 claps, 1 yell), S2T21(1 yell)

Following a successful premiere the night before, the band returns for their second and final warm-up gig before returning to England to headline the Knebworth Festival. The energy is high as the band hammers through the opening numbers. Page shreds frantically through the guitar solo during Celebration Day. Plant announces "very nice to have the lights back with us tonight" before Black Dog. Nobody's Fault But Mine features a blistering guitar solo from Page. The band races through a fast-paced Misty Mountain Hop. No Quarter is short and dynamic. Page blazes through an excellent guitar solo. The crowd's rhythmic clapping returns during the intro to Ten Years Gone. Page plays with incredible fluency during the guitar solos. The Rain Song is beautiful.

There is a slight cut during the transition from White Summer/Black Mountain Side to Kashmir. Plant delivers a powerful performance during the latter. The band hammers through an aggressive Trampled Underfoot, which is followed by the return of Sick Again. Plant introduces a frantic Achilles Last Stand as the best track on Presence. The walls of the theater quake under the power of Bonzo's thunderous pounding as Page tears through the frenzied guitar solos. A brutally heavy performance. In the Evening is explosive, a major highlight of the new setlist. Page blazes through an outstanding guitar solo during Stairway to Heaven, one of the best in recent memory. The band closes the show with a radical new arrangement of Whole Lotta Love. Another excellent performance

Two years after tragedy brought the 1977 North American tour to an abrupt end, the band has risen from the ashes to prepare for the biggest shows of their career with two warm-up gigs in Denmark. The setlist has undergone a few changes to make room for a couple new songs from the band's yet to be released final studio album In Through the Out Door, along with some old favorites. As the band takes the stage, Plant complains about the lights, telling the crowd "we must apologize... the lights keep going down, so we're gonna play with like half a light show, okay?" After a long pause, the show finally gets underway with the familiar opening chords of The Song Remains the Same. The band is full of energy as they hammer through the song with incredible intensity. Plant is still getting a feel for his mature voice, missing a few notes that used to come more easily. As the song ends, Page launches into the first appearance of Celebration Day since 7/29/1973.

Plant tells the crowd "it's been eight years since we were here last time, so there's not too much talkin' to do... quite a bit of playing" before introducing a bone-crushing Black Dog. Page is on fire, shredding wildly during the guitar solo. Plant walks away from the microphone to retrieve his harmonica before introducing Nobody's Fault But Mine, telling the crowd "this is from Blind Willie Johnson." Over the Hills and Far Away is immediately followed by a high-speed Misty Mountain Hop, its first appearance since the end of the 1973 North American tour. Page seems a bit lost during the guitar solo. Since I've Been Loving You is played in a jazzy new arrangement. Page blazes through a fantastic extended guitar solo. Plant's voice is still a bit rusty, he has trouble reaching some of the higher notes. No Quarter has been stripped down to basics, replacing the overindulgent marathons of the past with a much more efficient arrangement. The crowd begins clapping rhythmically during any lull in Jones's piano solo. Page tears through the guitar solo with amazing fluency and precision.

Plant mentions the new album before the first premiere of the night, Hot Dog. Someone in the crowd can be heard shouting a mispronounced "D'yer Mak'er!", to which Plant responds "never 'eard of it" before introducing a beautiful rendition of The Rain Song, performed for the first time since the final night at Earls Court. Kashmir is preceded by an abbreviated White Summer/Black Mountain Side. Plant hints at Back Door Man before a thunderous Achilles Last Stand, played at a more relaxed tempo than usual. The second premiere of the night comes with the first performance of In the Evening, which is preceded by a short bows solo from Page. Plant delivers a powerful performance, belting out each line with bravado. The crowd erupts as Page begins Stairway to Heaven. As the band leaves the stage following a raucous Rock and Roll, Plant announces "thank you very much, it was... okay, goodnight." An excellent first outing for a new, more professional Led Zeppelin. Must hear.

The tape is absolutely fantastic, one of the best audience recordings ever made.

These three tracks were not performed at the Tokyo show, but were performed on the other dates.

Atom Heart Mother (33:29)
Atom Heart Mother (reprise) (2:52)

Total running time approx 2 hours 31 minutes

NOTES FROM PETE:
The origins of this copy of the recording are as follows:
I went to University in Sheffield in October 1981. Sometime in my first year there (not sure if it was 81 or 82) I noticed an advert on a noticeboard in the University's Student Union building by a guy offering rare tapes of Pink Floyd and a number of other bands. I bought this recording on a TDK AD C60 and C120 Cassette (see the photos) from the guy who turned out to be a post-graduate. From my recollection (and it is 27 years ago!) the tapes I got were from his first gen copy from the masters. They are definitely not from vinyl (you can just tell!!!) and it predates the CD or CDR bootleg era. Ironically I think the cassettes have survived well because I only played them a few times as I was more into Stones and Clapton at the time. I guess it could be as little as four or five times prior to me finally capturing them as digital files. I was prompted to transfer it to digital format by two things:

1) I downloaded a couple of the bootlegs from the same date via the internet and I thought, "This is not half as good quality as I remember my tapes being"
2) A friend was clearing out his loft and offered me a little used NAD tapedeck, so now I had no excuse not to investigate my hunch that I had a better copy of this recording.

The finished item is superb. I have really enjoyed getting back into this whole 68-72 Floyd era. I think the desire to get the best version of Sheffield 1970 out to the fan-base has made me go back and take an even greater interest in the legitimate and (ever expanding) bootleg stuff from this era.

A final, but very important note. A big "thank you" to John Johnstone (a colleague from work) who suggested I offered up the raw WAVs of the tapes to the Harvested Team. What an excellent piece of advice!

NOTES FROM MOB:
Pete's tapes were in really good condition, despite their age. The original recording was done with mono equipment, and the music was well centered between the 2 channels of the tapes (generally, old tapes tend to have fluctuations between channels, even if the original recording is mono, but it was not the case here). The hiss was very stable throughout the tapes, with almost no sign of warble.

The main problem with the recording was the speed. The tapes ran too fast, and the speed was not constant throughout the show (this is a well known problem of old analogue tape recorders, very dependent on the battery level fluctuations during a concert). Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast was almost at correct speed, but the speed of the following tracks increased progressively during the songs. The real difficulties began with A Saucerful Of Secrets, because the batteries were probably unloading faster. The speed was different depending on the part of the song, so I had to apply speed correction on a case by case basis. Atom Heart Mother was even worse, the very end really too fast.

After dealing with the speed issues, I carefully applied slight EQ to enhance some particular frequencies that were buried in the original recording (probably due to the original recorder and mic characteristics). An important note is that I didn't try to dehiss the recording. As a result, this remaster still has a good amount of hiss. After all, this is a 2nd gen and you cannot have a significant reduction of hiss without degrading the music clarity. Moreover, I wanted to keep the sound as natural as possible, because the best sounding version of that concert until now was the highly processed "Disgusting Hardly Music", remastered from Pete's tapes too, but with a lot of NR applied. I wanted this new remaster to be a nice alternative to DHM: people who can't stand hiss and don't mind about digital NR artefacts can still enjoy DHM, while people who prefer unprocessed recordings should definitely adopt "Rise & Shine" (of course it's not striclty "unprocessed" because I corrected the speed, applied some EQ and carefully cleaned the drop-outs and tape flaws, but anyway this still sounds "natural", unlike the other versions I heard).

As usual with all my remasters, I also manually cleaned every tape flaw that I could detect (cuts, small drop-outs, pops, crackles ...).

Here are the comparisons we did with the other RoIOs from that concert:
- "Allen's Psychedelic Breakfast" (from Circus Sun APSB 1270 A/B LP): full of vinyl clicks and pops
- "A Psychedelic Night" (Triangle Records PYCD 038 & 039): this silver bootleg CD is muffled and denoised to death
- "Alan's Psychedelic Christmas": 3rd or 4th gen from VHS, too dehissed
- "Pink's Psychedelic Last Night" (Highland HL176): again, very processed (NR)
- "Alan's Psychedelic Master Tape" (Ayanami-227): certainly not from mastertape (Ayanami often claims to have the masters while it's wrong) and over-processed
- "1st Gen": this RoIO is the only other "unprocessed" version apparently circulating, but it sounds more distant than Pete's 2nd gen; I guess the title "1st gen" is not correct, it's more probably 2nd or 3rd gen.
- "Disgusting Hardly Music" (FOS-CDR-001 ): music is very clear but NR artifacts are obvious

To summarise, we think that this new release "Rise & Shine" has the following benefits:
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with "natural" sound (apart from the so-called "1st gen" which is sounding much more distant)
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with correct speed for all the tracks
- it's the only Sheffield RoIO with the drop-outs and tape flaws corrected (in particular, you can check the very beginning of Careful's scream: the abrupt cut in the master recording is magically fixed ;-) )

Thanks to Pete for approaching us with this project and supplying us with the great source material. And, of course, thanks to MOB, the James Guthrie of bootlegs!

This theater show was one of the few "An Evening with …" two-set shows of the summer, and the band made the most of this intimate, 100-year old venue. The first set is opens and closes with "Mountain Jam," with plenty of killer playing in between, including great versions of "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" and "High Cost of Low Living." The second set features such rarities as "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and "Into the Mystic," plus a rocking version of "Jessica," and special guest Susan Tedeschi sitting in on "Don’t Think Twice (It’s Alright)."
