LES CLAYPOOL - Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang – Four Foot Shack
Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang – Four Foot Shack (2014)
Les ClaypooL Last year, Les Claypool went through a huge Django Reinhardt phase and ”a lot of really, really old hillbilly stuff from the Thirties and Forties,” all of which served as the impetus for his latest project, Duo de Twang. The project is a rhythmic conglomeration of raw, old-country moonshine music and the group’s first album, Four Foot Shack, is set for release on February 4th. The 15 songs mix everything from traditionals and Primus classics to songs by the Bee Gees and Alice in Chains – all through Claypool’s unique twang filter.
Though the Duo was originally conceived as a one-off performance for San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, it’s more the product of Claypool’s early influences and a camping trip he took with his teenage son. Along with their typical fishing gear — rods, a bow and arrow, the dog — Claypool grabbed his twang bass and his son brought along his banjo. Sitting around the campfire playing Vernon Dalhart’s “Big Rock Candy Mountain,” Claypool had an epiphany, and decided to bring that intimate, campsite atmosphere to this project, fire included.
“I’ve called this my fuck-off vacation band,” Claypool told Rolling Stone. ”I’m getting a chance to bullshit with the audience. You’ve got two guys that have to hold down the rhythm and you can’t get too terribly melodic except with the vocals or whatnot.”
Four Foot Shack itself is all guitar and bass, save for a brief appearance by Claypool’s son on banjo and the “mini-tamobrine-doohicky” Claypool uses to supply a constant beat. Claypool’s partner in twang is guitarist Bryan Kehoe, a friend since high school, who fans may recognize from Claypool’s jamband mockumentary Electric Apricot: Quest for Festeroo.
Though there is one outtake from the road, the album was cut in a studio with very little altering done to the recording. “It’s as dry and as close to just sitting in front of a microphone as you can get,” Claypool said of the recording. “Every now and again I have to remind myself, when all is said and done, the thing I do best — besides being a dad — the thing that people want to see me do, is stand up there and wiggle my fingers on that four string piece of furniture.”
“Four Foot Shack” (Les Claypool’s Duo de Twang)
“Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver” (Primus)
“Amos Moses” (Jerry Reed)
“Red State Girl” (Les Claypool)
“The Bridge Came Tumblin’ Down” (Stompin’ Tom Connors)
“Boonville Stomp” (Les Claypool)
“Stayin’ Alive” (Bee Gees)
“Rumble of the Diesel” (Les Claypool)
“Pipe Line” (The Chantays)
“Buzzards of Greenhill” (Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade)
“Hendershot” (Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade)
“Man in the Box” (Alice in Chains)
“D’s Diner” (Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade)
“Battle of New Orleans” (Johnny Horton)
“Jerry Was a Race Car Driver” (Primus)

Mushroom - "Analog Hi-Fi Surprise"
(Remastered with Bonus Tracks) (Weed Records 2002, weed 7910)
From Aural Innovations #22 (January 2003)
When it came out in 1999, there wasn’t much else on the music scene that sounded anything like Mushroom’s Analog Hi-Fi Surprise. Utilizing the rhythmic structures of modern electronica, but playing music on vintage instruments that combined the groundbreaking jazz styles of Bitches Brew era Miles Davis and Head Hunters era Herbie Hancock with the German kosmische musik explorers like Can and Neu!, Mushroom created a masterwork of freaked out funky fusion and swirling psychedelic space jazz that has, in the few short years since its release, been highly influential in its own right. And although it may be a little bit premature for a re-issue with bonus tracks, I don’t think you’ll hear any Mushroom fans complaining. Certainly not this one!
The bonus tracks (all together totalling about 25-minutes of extra music) are all taken directly from the same sessions with the same players that gave birth to the original tracks on the album, so there’s no compromise to the overall experience. In fact, Jamming With Erik is as tasty a slice of space funk as you’re likely to hear, and gets things going right off the start now, before the classic, and more experimental sounding Magic of Michael, which opened the original album. I’d have to say, actually, that most of the bonus tracks are a little more on the composed and melodic side, with less of a jam session feel than the original material, giving the album a fuller, more complete array of sonic delights to sample from now. One of the best of the bonus tracks is lead guitarist Dan Olmstead’s twangy, groovin’ Theme from the Movie "Rock Bottom", which producer (and drummer) Patrick O’Hearn even says in the liner notes that if he’d been using his brain, he would have included on the original CD. Mother’s, Birmingham, 3:00 am is perhaps the most psychedelic addition to the album, with a cheerful, trippy Carnaby Street feel to it. Fitting, considering it’s named after the legendary British club that was host to numerous celebrated UK bands in the late 60’s and early 70’s (including Pink Floyd, who recorded part of their classic live Ummagumma album there). Mushroom adds to their collection of overly long but amusing song titles with the new closing track Women want many things from just one man, Men want just one thing from many different women. It’s an appealing little number with some more of Olmstead’s twangy guitar, gentle Rhodes, whooshing space sounds, and an eccentric rhythm that effectively utilizes some backwards recording techniques (as the album’s name implies, it was recorded using analog equipment for that special vintage sound). My only complaint about this last piece is not about the actual track itself, but its placement on the CD. While I definitely appreciate O’Hearn’s decision to scatter the bonus tracks amongst the original ones (instead of just lumping them together at the end as these things often go), I always thought, and still do, that the sublime Abbie Hoffman made a perfect end to the album. I would have preferred Women want... somewhere in the middle with the other tracks, leaving the original closing of the album intact. But it’s a minor quibble. The re-issue has new liner notes from O’Hearn with amusing anecdotes, such as the fact that A song of remembrance for a time when wife swapping was considered politically correct and The evolution of smells in an underground garage after an all night rave would have been one continuous piece if the tape hadn’t run out.
So the question is, if you already have the original Analog Hi-Fi Surprise, is it worth forking out the bucks for this version? Well, that’s a question you’d have to answer for yourself. I don’t think you need to be a Mushroom collector to find value in this CD though. The value is apparent in the quality of both the extra tracks and the original ones. http://fp.io/243b8eed/

This is the part of the stream of essential Traffic performances 1967-1974.
This recording was made while the band was taping shows for their soon-to-be-released On The Road double CD. For the tours and records made around this time ('72-'74), Traffic was augmented by three members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, a group that had provided backing on some of the greatest rock and R&B hits of the 1960s and '70s, including many classic Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield records. This same month, Traffic released Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory, which went gold and reached the American Top 10.
By adding David Hood on bass, Roger Hawkins on drums and Barry Beckett on keyboards, the group's core members -Winwood, percussionist/vocalist Jim Capaldi and sax player/flutist Chris Wood - found an enormous amount of freedom to play their respective instruments. Many Traffic classics are here, including "Empty Pages," "Evening Blue," "Forty Thousand Headman," "Glad" and "Freedom Rider," but there is still enough room for several, then-new tracks to be featured, including "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory," "Rock and Roll Stew," "Roll Right Stones," "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired" and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone."
For fans of Traffic, Winwood, or classic rock in general, it doesn't get much better than this.
