Notes:
Download Series Vol. 7 came about while working on the new "Dead Ahead" DVD. We found ourselves immersed in 1980, one of the Grateful Dead's most under-appreciated years. Although some of the many great shows of the year are missing from the vault (including the bookends of Download Vol. 7, 9/2/80 in Rochester and 9/6/80 in Lewiston), we were thrilled to find the master soundboard tapes for the entirety of the 9/3 show from Springfield and the second set of the Providence show from 9/4. Unfortunately, there’s no sign of the missing first set from 9/4.

Download Series Vol. 6 is a rare treasure from March 1968 at the Carousel Ballroom in San Francisco. This 1 disc release includes all of the second set and a Lovelight which was the only song salvageable from the first set.
While working on the "Fillmore West 1969-The Complete Recordings" box set, we searched every nook and cranny of the vault for interesting contextual items for the release, as well as for material to include on the bonus CD offered with the box set and the 3-CD compilation. The greatest find amongst our many discoveries was this gem of a show, 3/17/68 at the Carousel Ballroom (the Carousel, of course, later became the Fillmore West). If you like Anthem of the Sun and Dick's Picks Vol. 22 (Lake Tahoe 1968), you will positively LOVE this new release. The sound quality is remarkable for its age, with a nice full mix; it has a song list that is exceptional even for this era of preposterously stunning song lists; and the performances match up with, and at times surpass, the much-lauded Tahoe '68 release.
Starting out with the first-set-closing "Lovelight" (the rest of the first set was marred by technical problems wrought in part by sound experiments conducted on the master tapes during production of Anthem of the Sun late in 1968), Download Vol. 6 then proceeds into a 60+ minute non-stop jam, featuring all of the staples of the era ("That's It For The Other One," "New Potato Caboose," "China Cat Sunflower," and the "The Eleven") culminating with a powerful, intense and dynamic "Caution" that will drop your jaw. To cap it all off, a way-out "Feedback" jam ends this outstanding one-disc wonder.

From the Spring Tour of 1988, Download Series Vol. 5 is a 3 disc performance featuring the middle night of a 3-night run at the famed Hampton Coliseum in Virginia in its entirety.
Every year in the Grateful Dead’s touring history contained shows that were justifiably considered to be the best of the year. Cornell comes to mind for 1977, Harpur or 2/13 at the Fillmore East in 1970, Augusta, ME, in 1984, and for 1988, the show most widely remembered as the best of the year is the middle night in Hampton, VA, on the Spring Tour: March 27, 1988. Those who were present agree that there was magic in the air that night. We are pleased to announce that Grateful Dead Download Series Vol. 5 is this incredibly dynamic concert, in its entirety. For those who have heard the “Ultra-Matrix” tape of this concert, Download Vol. 5 will be a revelation: an impeccably clean, crispy pure soundboard recording, which reveals every nuance of this amazing concert.*
Highlights are many, with some rarities mixed in the fold on this special night alongside stellar versions of several Grateful Dead classics. Early in the first set, we are treated to the first and one of only two performances of Bob Dylan’s “Ballad Of A Thin Man,” followed by the country one-two punch of “Cumberland Blues” and “Me and My Uncle.” Next up is the return to the rotation of “To Lay Me Down,” its first appearance in almost five years, although you wouldn’t know it by this performance. The second set features the most powerful version of the trio of “Sugar Magnolia>Scarlet Begonias>Fire On The Mountain” since the Closing Of Winterland, preceded by the only version ever played of Miles Davis’ “So What.” Later, the second set includes terrific renditions of “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” and “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” all capped by the expected “Sunshine Daydream.” Finally, 1988 is represented with an official release, and what a show it is!
* please note that due to technical issues on the master soundboard digital tapes, the first two songs of Download Series Vol. 5 are from the “Ultra-Matrix” soundboard/audience tape hybrid. The rest of the concert, however, is from the soundboard master.

Download Series Vol. 4 is a 3 CD set featuring virtually all of the 6/18/76 show from the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. "Tennessee Jed" was omitted because the master tape was plagued with technical problems that could not be fixed in mastering. The third disc in this series contains highlights from concerts later that month in Philadelphia and Chicago.
June of 1976 is an essential month in the history of the Grateful Dead, as it marked the return to their prolific touring schedule that would continue virtually non-stop for almost 20 years. Starting in Portland, OR, on June 3 and running to the East Coast and Midwest through the end of the month, the reinvigorated Grateful Dead, with Mickey back in the fold, returned to the road and immediately let it be known that they were back with a vengeance. As the tour gained steam through Boston and New York, the band landed for a three night run at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ. The middle night of this run, 6/18/76, is a typically hot, and surprisingly exploratory show.
New songs recently added to the repertoire, such as "The Music Never Stopped," "Crazy Fingers," "Samson and Delilah" and "The Wheel" are all present on Download Volume 4, and sound as though they've been a part of the band's song book for years, along with the revitalized "St. Stephen," "Cassidy," and one of only five Grateful Dead performances of Jerry's "Mission In The Rain." The highlight of the big second set jam is a wonderful "Eyes Of The World" that begins with a very long instrumental passage reminiscent of the 1974 jazz-influenced version of this song.
To round out Download Volume 4, highlights from the next run of shows in Philadelphia are included, featuring stellar versions of "Candyman," the new "Lazy Ligtnin'> Supplication," an incredibly jammed-out performance of "Scarlet Begonias" and a 23 minute "Playing In The Band" featuring a very distinct "Fire On The Mountain" jam in the middle, led by Phil. To cap it all off, a sweet reading of the newly-returned-to-action "High Time" from the tour's penultimate show in Chicago ends the release.

Although recorded only two short months after the recently unearthed music contained on Dick’s Picks 35 (aka "The Houseboat Tapes"), Download Series Vol. 3 presents a remarkably different, but equally-inspired, version of the Grateful Dead. This 2 disc, complete show gem recorded in Western New York state in the Fall of 1971 is just the fifth show with Keith Godchaux as the keyboard player, a personnel move motivated by Pigpen's failing health.
