This recording is from April 7 and not April 12 as many people are circulating. The song "Let Me Go, Rock And Roll"
had not yet been released on an album (it would be on Hotter Than Hell later in the year) and so the title as it was
used early on was "Baby, Let Me Go."

Comments:

Sammy's "Four Decades of Rock" tour came through Chicago last weekend, and I felt compelled to see the show via discounted "obstructed view" seats which (like the previous week's Black Crowes/Tedeschi Trucks Band show) weren't obstructed at all.  Altogether, definitely got my money's worth relative to the people two seats over who paid three times as much for tickets.  Sammy put on a very entertaining show which exceeded my expectations and whipped the crowd into a frenzy on a beautiful night in a beautiful setting.

The setlist roughly followed his discography, with an introductory medley of Montrose tunes, followed by a batch of his hits from the 1980s.  A six-pack of Van Hagar songs followed, five of which featured a very animated (and possibly overserved) Michael Anthony on bass and backing vocals.  The last section of the show featured his recent solo material with the Wabos, including (I think) a couple of yet-to-be-released tracks.  The band was animated and very tight; Sammy didn't seem to have spent a lot of time rehearsing, but his flubs were forgiven by the adoring crowd who partied as hard as they could during his 105-minute set.  His voice has lost a little edge over the years, but he still delivers (and has much better range than the former/current VH vocalist, Diamond Dave).  Really fun show.

In terms of sound quality, this was the loudest show I've seen in awhile, and I could feel every bass drum kick thudding in my chest.  You can pick this up on the recording; the low end is really powerful and crisp.  Vocals and guitar kind of go in and out in the mix; they're not as prominent as they should be, but good enough.  Sound quality is a lot better than I expected being close up.  There may be yet another source released that was recorded in the back; this one lacks some of the "ambience" of the setting, but there's a great immediacy to the recording where you feel like everything is happening right in front of you.  If you're a Sammy Hagar fan at all, you'll find this worth the download.  A couple of random comments:
*  Jim Peterik (formerly of Ides of March and Survivor) makes a 30-second cameo at the end of "Heavy Metal" singing backing vocals and high-fiving the band.  Sammy introduces him and mentions they wrote the song together.  Who knew?
*  Michael Anthony's backing vocals are too high in the mix, and shall we say, "tough" -- he really should stick to bass, IMO.  He's singing in the wrong key most of the time; perhaps due to his level of excitement (which was very high).  He was really animated during his brief appearance and his bass parts sounded great. His off-key vocals were apparently managed better during the reunion tour in '04 than they are here.
*  There are periodic bursts of static and distortion in the VH mini-set, I think because there may have been a short in Anthony's vocal mic (or perhaps it was overloaded).  I don't think this is the fault of the taping gear or the sound system, and you can get used to it (though it's annoying).
*  I've never seen anyone sign merchandise during a show before, and it was funny that people were passing t-shirts and vinyl albums up to the stage for him to sign throughout the show.  The most fan-friendly thing I think I've ever seen during a show; at one point, you can hear him direct audience members to pass a signed Blackhawks jersey back to the right audience member (he pointed to the fan and said, "It's his").

The show was a fun party, and I think the atmosphere translates well on the recording.  If you like his music (with and/or without VH), you'll probably find this well worth the download.  For my part, it was 105 minutes well spent.

wasted on the way, change partners, you don't have to cry, long time gone, guinnevere, suite: judy blue eyes, teach your children,

Over Halloween weekend of 1986, Bill Graham presented two monumental nights of music at Madison Square Garden. Promoted as "Crack Down" these special concerts featured a stellar roster of musicians with profits benefiting New York City's ongoing fight against crack addiction, which had become a serious problem over the course of the 1980s. The November 1st concert featured Santana and Ruben Blades headlining a night devoted to the cream of the crop of Latin artists, but Halloween night was the most memorable night, as not only did Santana and Blades perform, but this evening would see the Allman Brothers Band reunited for the first time, joined by a long list of notable guests and include an acoustic performance by Crosby, Stills and Nash. The King Biscuit Flower Hour was also on hand, capturing the night for posterity, with highlights of these concerts broadcast nationwide over the weeks to come.

This segment of the Crosby, Stills and Nash performance from Halloween night finds the group in good spirits and surprisingly harmonious form. Crosby's well-publicized battles with drug addiction and his subsequent incarceration on drugs and weapons charges had him locked up since December of 1985, which likely saved his life. He was finally paroled and after several weeks in a halfway house, regained his freedom at the tail end of August 1986. With this concert occurring just two months later, Crosby was a welcome sight indeed. Not surprisingly, being forced to kick his addictions had done him a world of good. He was now healthier than he'd been in many years and his velvety voice had returned along with his motivation to sing and perform. With just their acoustic guitars, the trio had joined forces again, much to the delight of the New York City audience.

The recording begins with a monologue, in which Crosby and Stills humorously condense the history of the band as an introduction to Graham Nash's "Wasted On The Way." With lyrics that now resonate stronger than they ever did in 1982, when the song was originally released, this immediately shows the three voices harmonizing better than they had in well over a decade. Prefaced by David Crosby advising the audience to "treasure your loved ones because you never know how long you'll have them," a truly passionate reading of "Guinnevere" follows. This is a wonderful performance that proves, despite all the turmoil and self-abuse of recent years, the blend of Crosby and Nash's voices remained extraordinary.

The remaining two numbers are both Stephen Stills songs from the group's debut album. Stripped down to just acoustic guitar and voices, both serve to emphasize what brought the trio together in the first place. "You Don't Have To Cry" is followed by "Helplessly Hoping" which quite literally serves this purpose, being the very first song the three of them ever sang together. Featuring lovely acoustic guitar work from Stills, both of these songs showcase the special vocal chemistry between these three musicians.    http://fp.io/2b77e495/

This Allman Brothers performance is not only notable for the special guests that joined them onstage for this special event, but for the fact that they played at all. The group had retired as a live act during this time period, and the Gregg Allman Band and Dickey Betts Band were two separate entities. Here the two bands collaborate for a set of Allman Brothers favorites, followed by a second set of jam sessions featuring many great musicians.

Following Bill Graham's introduction of the band members, they warm up with Gregg's "Midnight Rider" followed by Betts' "Blue Sky," two classic older originals. Following these opening numbers, they bring out Paul Butterfield to add his extraordinary harp blowing skills to an extended version of "One Way Out" followed by "Statesboro Blues." They end this initial set with a double dose of classic's from the "Brothers And Sisters" album; "Southbound" and the ever popular instrumental "Jessica."

The jam set begins with Bill Graham introducing Felix Cavaliere, the great lead singer and organist from The Rascals to the stage. He replaces Gregg in the organ seat and the group kicks into a high energy take on "Good Lovin'." Felix is a master at engaging a crowd and he gets everyone moving while improvising a little jam in the middle that features bits of Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" as well as "Who Do You Love," before reprising "Good Lovin'" proper.

With the excitement level raised considerably, Bill Graham returns to the stage to introduce a plethora of other guests for an open jam session. Gregg Allman returns to the organ seat and is joined once again by Paul Butterfield, but now they add three additional guitarists, Carlos Santana, Mick Taylor, and Stephen Stills, as well as percussionists Buddy Miles and Baba Olatunji to the massive ensemble.

What transpires is approximately half an hour of jamming that begins with the rockin' blues of "Key to the Highway" and "I Got My Mojo Workin'" before transitioning into a Latin-flavored "Jingo" jam that dissolves into a percussion extravaganza led by Olatunji. All in all, this is a very unusual set and another example of Bill Graham bringing fascinating combinations of musicians together on stage.                                                     http://fp.io/d6mfdf4m/

Normally bands pre-record their appearance on this radio program, but Tin Machine played live on the air glitches and all. This is evident when Hunt Sales has to grab for a new stick at the begining of Stateside. Nice clean and crisp recording, a must for David Bowie & Tin Machine collectors!

justdave's notes:
When I got this it had a lot of sector boundary errors. I decoded the flac files with Traders Little Helper, then re-encoded aligning all sector boundaries and packed it up for sharing I didn't remix, remaster or mess with the recording at all.

History:
Tin Machine was a hard rock band formed in 1988, famous for being fronted by singer David Bowie. The group recorded two studio albums before dissolving in 1992, when Bowie returned to his solo career. Drummer Hunt Sales said that the group's name "reflects the sound of the band," and Bowie stated that he and his bandmates joined up "to make the kind of music that we enjoyed listening to."

The Never Let Me Down album and subsequent Glass Spider Tour had been savaged by critics, and Bowie was aware of his low standing. Eager to return to making music for himself rather than the mainstream audience he had acquired following the Let's Dance album, Bowie began collaborating with Reeves Gabrels (who pushed the singer to rediscover his experimental side) and multi-instrumentalist Erdal Kizilcay on new material in 1988. The first fruits of this came with a new version of Bowie’s 1979 song "Look Back in Anger", performed at the Intruders At The Palace benefit concert on 1 July 1988. They then began to plan a concept album based on Steven Berkoff's play East as a Bowie solo album, but this idea was scrapped. Bowie and Gabrels began working with producer Tim Palmer on new material. Bowie then recruited brothers Hunt and Tony Sales (the sons of comedian Soupy Sales) as a rhythm section. Bowie had worked with them on Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life album and ran into them at a party in Los Angeles around this time.

The Sales brothers moved the tone of the sessions at Compass Point Studios in Nassau away from art-rock and more towards hard rock, and Bowie looked to one of his favorite bands at the time, The Pixies, for inspiration. The Sales brothers heckled Bowie into greater spontaneity, with most songs recorded in one take, and lyrics left unpolished, thus giving the band a ragged, punk rock edge similar to the Pixies.

The band claimed their musical influences were Gene Krupa, Charlie Mingus, Jimi Hendrix, Glenn Branca and Mountain.

The group chose the name Tin Machine after one of the songs they had written (Gabrels would later credit the Sales brothers with this choice). The group set up allowed Bowie a certain level of anonymity, much needed after his 1980s overexposure, and he was happy to let the rest of the band (notably Hunt Sales) take the lead in interviews.

The band’s self-titled first album produced mixed but generally positive reviews on release in May 1989, picking up favourable comparisons with Bowie’s three more recent solo albums. However, many critics were scornful of Bowie’s latest attempt to reinvent himself as a bearded band-member. Commercially, the album initially sold well, reaching #3 in the UK Albums Chart, but sales quickly tailed off. The band undertook a low-key tour in small venues between 14 June and 3 July 1989, before further recording sessions in Sydney, Australia. During these sessions Tin Machine contributed to a surfing compilation album, Beyond the Beach, with a new instrumental song titled "Needles on the Beach".

The group then went on hiatus while Bowie conducted his solo Sound+Vision Tour. In December 1990, Bowie split from EMI. Both parties stated that the split was amicable, although it is believed EMI refused to release another Tin Machine album in an exasperated attempt to secure another album similar to Let's Dance. In March 1991, the group signed to Victory Music, a new label launched by JVC and distributed worldwide by London Records and Polygram, and recorded more new material. This was combined with tracks from the Sydney sessions to form Tin Machine II album. This time the commercial success was even more fleeting, and Bowie was already tired of being shackled to a group set-up.From 5 October 1991 to 17 February 1992, the group undertook a larger tour, known as the It's My Life Tour. The band was joined on this tour by guitarist Eric Schermerhorn, who would go on to play with Bowie's friend Iggy Pop.

Tracks from this tour were released on the July 1992 album Tin Machine Live: Oy Vey, Baby. Shortly afterwards, Bowie returned to solo recording with his single “Real Cool World” and the band dissolved.

Bowie promised Tin Machine III or at the very least a boxed-set of unreleased material in the mid-1990s, but his solo career had taken precedence, making him reluctant to dedicate energy to an old project. He continued to work with Gabrels, spanning four albums after Tin Machine: Black Tie White Noise (Gabrels contributed to only one track), Outside, Earthling, and 'hours...' After the last album, Gabrels felt that Bowie was moving in a softer, gentler direction that he did not want to travel in, so the two parted ways professionally. In some interviews he has also indicated his disappointment in the retrospective projects Bowie was planning at the time (the Toy album as well as the Ziggy 2002 project) played a part in his parting with Bowie.
