NORTH Mississippi All-Stars – World Boogie Is Coming (2013)
North Mississippi All-StarsAcclaimed roots band North Mississippi Allstars pay homage to legendary songwriters like RL Burnside and Junior Kimbrough on their new album World Boogie Is Coming. The self-produced album is said to be a “return to the band’s blues-infused rock & roll roots” and was recorded at the band’s own Zebra Ranch Studios in Hernando, Mississippi. Sitting in on the sessions are longtime friends Duwayne and Gary Burnside, Kenny Brown, Alvin Youngblood Hart, Chris Chew, Sharde Thomas (Otha Turner’s granddaughter), Steve Selvidge and Lightnin’ Malcolm.
“The whole concept of the album is almost like a soundtrack,” says Allstar Luther Dickinson. “We have four videos and the trailer, and that is what inspires the record more than anything.

HOT TUNA - Electric Celestial Blues at Fillmore 1994

Electric Hot Tuna recorded live at the Fillmore, San Francisco, in December 1994.
Hot Tuna remains one of America's Underground Music Buried Treasures which is very unfortunate since the DVD of their electric 1994 performance does nothing to help show what a unique band this really is. Anyone who has followed the careers of these music icons from the demise of the Jefferson Airplane through the current Further Festival Grateful Dead revival relationships will tell you stories of late night jams taking them all the way to the morning sun-rise. They are as American as apple pie yet the producers of this video felt compelled to not let this concert performance stand on its own merit. Instead each song is annoyingly cut into interviews of band members ruining the overall effect of this video. From a technical standpoint, the music is true. It has some analog PA Board hiss instead of being a slick digital studio production. However, this is they way they really sound live. The video looks like it was remastered from video tape, not film. Probably the high-light of this DVD is the bonus audio tracks which are only available on this DVD and not on CD. That is the only reason I gave this DVD a three star rating instead of a two star rating. In summary, this Video suffers from the same production flaws and format as their 1992 Acoustic Sweet Water release. In other words, if you have been waiting for a good 'unedited' concert release of Hot Tuna then you'll probably still have a long while to wait.
Born out of the Delta blues sound, Jefferson Airplane spin-off Hot Tuna has been bringing music fans the blues for over 30 years. Join Hot Tuna in its final electric performance from the legendary Fillmore with this exciting release from Ryko Distribution. Presented in standard 1.33:1 full-screen and featuring an English Dolby Digital Stereo soundtrack, experience the sounds of electric Hot Tuna one last time with tunes such as "Candyman," "Wavy Gravy Blues," and "My AK47." In addition to the 14 live tracks, enjoy an additional six-track audio program and the bonus video tracks "Reminiscing With Jorma and Jack Backstage at the Fillmore" and a "Jorma Kaukonen -- Too Many Years" promo.

THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - Darien Center, NY - 08/23/2013
The Allman Brothers Band.
Darien Center, NY 08/23/2013
A gorgeous Friday evening out at the Darien Lake Performing Arts Center was capped off with
a double bill featuring The Allman Brothers Band and special guest Steve Winwood. It was a
brilliant night for the two hall of fame acts who have received many accolades to justify
their longevity in the world of music. The Allmans had just finished playing two shows each
in Scranton, PA and Chicago over the past week to warm up. This show marked the first of six
in which Winwood will open for The Allmans during this short run of ten dates. The Allman
Brothers got things started with a blistering version of “Statesboro Blues”. The combination
of guitarists Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks was amazing. It was good to hear singer Gregg
Allman sound strong following all his recent health issues. The three drum attack of Butch
Trucks, “Jaimoe” Johanson and Marc Quinones made the sound so much fuller. Bassist Oteil
Burbridge rounded out the band who seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere despite a smaller
than usual crowd for a Darien show.
The band played some covers as well as some of their own gems during the two hour plus show.
Once the band ripped into “Midnight Rider” the show took an upswing that never really ended
until the closing notes of the final song of the night “Southbound”. In between we were
treated to great renditions of “Melissa”, a sweltering “Revival” and the main set closer
“One Way Out”. Fittingly, a very enjoyable “Blue Sky” was what the band returned to the
stage with for the first song of the encore, following a slight delay.
