The night after The Who recorded the performance that would become Live at Leeds, a document of the ferocity and raw energy they were applying to their stage show in 1970, they drove down to neighboring town of Hull and gave a second concert to a considerably more subdued audience. Over the years since it's release, Live at Leeds was recognized as the definitive moment of The Who coming into their own as a live performance machine, and has been revered as one of the top live recordings of it's time, capturing the band at their most fiery peak. Most of the material on Live at Hull 1970 has been released commercially before as part of one of the countless expanded repackagings of Live at Leeds. Standing on it's own, the set is a bit of a redundant curiosity more than an essential piece of the band's discography. The set lists for both shows were identical, with the only exception being Live at Leeds' transcendent encore of "Magic Bus" being swapped out for an equally jammy 15+ minute "My Generation". The second set of both nights found the band playing Tommy in it's entirety. While Who aficionados could debate the finer points of the two gigs, casual listeners will have a hard time differentiating between the performances. Many of the differences come in the technicalities of the recordings, which are both raw on-site multi-track recordings with the Live at Hull recordings suffering initially from so many pops, glitches and even instrumental drop outs that the reels were shelved for decades. Digital editing cleaned up most blaring errors of the set, but it remains a "warts-and-all" sort of experience. Live at Hull is every bit as charged and volcanic as Live at Leeds, and the moments of shaky fidelity just add to the rough, exciting sound and feel of the album. While either set would stand well on it's own without the other, the forty-some years that made Live at Leeds a near-legendary album negate some of the power of the recordings made the next night. Live at Hull is great and powerful, but gratingly inconsequential when held up against it's predecessor. As a testament to the interchangeability of the two nights, it can be noted that the bass wasn't recorded on the original reels of the Hull concert on the first four songs. For this reissue, bass tracks from the night before were edited and manipulated to the a passable degree, almost as if to suggest the two sets were more or less identical.

REVIEW
by Edward White
Progressive rock at its best: avant-garde, chaotic and yet tensely atmospheric. X, the most recent album from Dutch art-rock supremos Focus, has a song for every occasion. From flute jazz-metal to organ ballad, the latest installment in their musical chronology is a masterpiece of cinematic soundscapes.

As is common in this fascinating genre of music, the album begins with a track that showcases the catalogue of rhythm and melody that Focus are capable of. From pulsing guitar-riff driven passages to jazzy breakdowns that introduce the flute , ‘Father Bachus’ is a proper introduction to this prolific band and demonstrates this band’s expansive repertoire of instruments.

The jazz influences are rife. Tracks such as ‘Amok in Kindergarten’ and ‘X Roads’ provide a slightly slower yet more intricate dose of chaotic melody. Listening to these tracks gives one the impression of being in a silent film from the early 20th century, simply by the sheer variety of moods and shifts of atmosphere. The vocals on the latter track acting to amp up this cinematic feel, its skiffle rhythm beautifully conducted by drumming hero Pierre Van Der Linden.

Frontman Thijs Van Leer typifies the pure musicality of Focus, swapping between keys and flute at will. The highlight of the album is his vocal contribution on ‘Le Tango’, a minimalist hispanic-styled track that manages to be so moody yet so uplifting, leaving listeners wishing for more vocals elsewhere on the album.

The track ‘Focus 10’ is one such track that is crying out for vocals. However, this does not detract praise from this track; it is a possible favourite amongst the album. With shades of the Dire Straits’ more jazzy passages, this song has a lovely eighties feel with an excellent piano-driven ballad rock core.

‘Hoeratio’, with a name that sounds like a mathematical method for differentiating ladies of loose undergarments, is one of the most familiar sounds on the album. Heavily reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s ‘Speak to me/Breathe’, this track combines the best of Focus’ melody and their dark, moody reverb.

If you are new to Focus, despite their 40 year history in the manufacture of such intriguing art, then this album is an excellent chance to experience their brand of masterful composition.

NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS - Live in the Hills II

North Mississippi Allstars – Live in the Hills II (2012)

North Mississippi Allstars ‘Live in the Hills II’ is the second release in their Bootleg Series.
The live recording was taken at the annual North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic in Potts Camp, MS on June 24, 2011.
Moving into much rootsier territory than their former punk band DDT, brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson formed the North Mississippi Allstars in ’96 with bassist Chris Chew. The sons of legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson were born in Fayette County, TN, and their family later moved to northern Mississippi, where the boys soaked up the country blues sound of the region from artists like Mississippi Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside. That became the chief inspiration for NMA, but the group also mixes in a rock edge, an alternative aesthetic (comparable to outfits like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the Black Keys), and a road-ready rock & roll sensibility akin to jam bands like Phish.
