THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - BEACON THEATRE, NEW YORK,NY. 03/24/2012

Allman Brothers Band
Beacon Theatre 3-24-12

It was another wild Saturday night at the Beacon Theatre with lots of special guest and a very good time was had by all!  For those of you that have missed the sound of the blues harp with the Brothers you got a double dose with Jimmy Hall and John Popper blowin' strong!  The Brothers pulled out the old Howlin Wolf song, Commit A Crime, that was recently played at the visit to the White House by Warren, Derek and Susan and did it proud.  They kept the Chicago Blues theme going with the famous Taj Mahal song, She Caught The Katy, and then went into a stellar Dreams with Warren playing the haunting guitar solos.
Afer a moving acoustic set the band reached back to the Duane Allman/Johnny Jenkins era and covered the Bob Dylan tune, Down Along The Cove.  A stellar performance of Franklin's Tower was a treat with Oteil singing lead and Popper adding his inventive harmonica sound.  The second set closed out with Liz Reed, featuring Rob Baranco on keys and Alvaro Benavides on bass.  Most of you are familiar with Baranco but if you have not heard Alvaro or the band he is in ( Pedrito Martinez) you will get another chance at Mtn Jam, don't miss it!  The encore was a rollickin' version of Southbound with Warren and Jimmy trading verses.  Yes indeed, it was a very fine Saturday night on the upper west side!  Gregg went M.I.A. the last 30mins. of the show due disc problems in his back.

TODD RUNDGREN'S - A Cappella / Nearly Human / 2nd Wind

Todd Rundgren – A Cappella / Nearly Human / 2nd Wind (2012)

Todd Rundgren‘s last three albums for Bearsville are rounded up on this double-disc set: the experimental A Cappella, the slick soul of Nearly Human, and the live-in-studio 2nd Wind. Apart from a dance mix of A Cappellas’ “Something to Fall Back On,” there are no bonus tracks, only new notes from Rundgren expert Paul Myers, and the audio is remastered, making this as an appealing package. Todd Rundgren’s best-known songs — the Carole King pastiche “I Saw the Light,” the ballads “Hello, It’s Me” and “Can We Still Be Friends,” and the goofy novelty “Bang on the Drum All Day” — suggest that he is a talented pop craftsman, but nothing more than that. On one level, that perception is true since he is undoubtedly a gifted pop songwriter, but at his…
…core, Rundgren is a rock & roll maverick. Once he had a taste of success with his 1972 masterwork Something/Anything?, Rundgren chose to abandon stardom and, with it, conventional pop music. He began a course through uncharted musical territory, becoming a pioneer not only in electronic music and prog rock, but in music video, computer software, and Internet music delivery as well. As his career wound into its third decade, Rundgren concentrated on behind-the-scenes innovations, but during the ’70s and ’80s he maintained a relentless work schedule. He released up to two albums a year either as a solo artist or with his band Utopia, while producing acclaimed, successful records for artists as diverse as Badfinger, Meat Loaf, Grand Funk Railroad, the New York Dolls, and XTC. Given such an extensive catalog, it’s not surprising that there’s a vast variety of styles within Rundgren’s music — which is either rewarding or frustrating, depending on the album. Also, more often than not, the singles from each record do not offer an accurate indication of what the remainder of the album sounds like. Such an approach severely curtailed his mass appeal, but it helped him cultivate a ferociously dedicated cult audience.
During the ’70s, his records were underground favorites, and his albums continued to chart until 1991, nearly 20 years after his commercial peak. In those 20 years, Rundgren may have existed largely on the fringes of pop music, but he produced a body of work that ranks as one of the most intriguing in rock & roll. A native of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania — a suburb of Philadelphia — Rundgren learned how to play guitar as a child, teaching himself after his initial round of lessons ceased. As a teenager, he absorbed pop music from Motown to Liverpool and formed Money, his first band, when he was 16. Following his high-school graduation, he moved to the resort town of Wildwood, NJ, where he regularly sat in with a number of bands. Eventually, he became a member of the blues group Woody’s Truck Stop, which soon became based in Philadelphia.

FRUMPY - LIVE NINTY-FIVE - 2003

BIOGRAPHY
by Andrew (Progarchives)
The four musicians who formed FRUMPY were all members of Irishman O' Brian-Docker's folkband The City Preachers, which he founded in Hamburg in 1965. The City Preachers played an excellent blend of American and British folk music and had, sometimes, over a dozen people on stage. Discontent with singer Dagmar Krause, drummer Carsten Bohn left the City Preachers in November 1969 and took singer Inga Rumpf, French keyboarder Jean-Jacques Kravetz and guitarist Karl-Heinz Schott with him to form FRUMPY. In spring of 1970, FRUMPY started a successful tour of France. The same year, they went on a 50 concert tour with SPOOKY TOOTH, and played with YES, HUMBLE PIE and RENAISSANCE. In autumn of 1970, FRUMPY released the first album "All Will Be Changed" which contained only own material with the exception of a Richie Havens cover. The Following year guitarist Rainer Baumann joined FRUMPY and played on the bands second LP "Frumpy 2", which was rapped in a round plastic bag. In Germany, the album was well received and proved that rock music from Germany could live up to international standard. Their music combines jazz, soul and eastern elements with the keyboards as the most important instrument. FRUMPY topped the Musik Express poll as the most popular German rock group of the year and the newspaper FAZ assisted singer Inga Rumpf to be "the country's biggest individual talent", but a tour of England with MOTT THE HOOPLE failed to attract popularity in Britain. Musical differences with keyboarder Kravetz caused him to leave FRUMPY, in spring 1972, to record a solo Lp with Inga Rumpf singing one song. But he returned for the recording sessions of FRUMPY's third LP "By The Way". But FRUMPY disbanded after a farewell concert on June 26, 1972. Inga Rumpf, Jean-Jacques Kravetz and Karl-Heinz Schott formed ATLANTIS. The year 1990 saw a FRUMPY reunion and a new LP "Now!".

FRUMPY - FRUMPY 2 - 1971

Frumpy - Frumpy 2 (1971)

Label: Frumpy

"Frumpy’s second album is fine example of early 70’s German progressive and hard rock mixture and excellent addition to prog collections. Four long tracks, with sound dominated by Jean-Jacques Kravetz’s keyboard chords and soloing, good bass playing and energetic and divers drumming, long jamming and obligatory changes of tempo and volume. Guitar is presented right on time to remember that there is a guitar player, while Inga Rumpf’s cracked hoarse loud and shouting voice is in perfect tune with keyboards and guitar sound and almost looks like keyboards or guitar originated. After two very good songs, there comes a third, “Take Care of Illusion”, the best to my criteria, while fourth is mostly wah- wah guitar based jam, with Bach-like part near the end. Recommended!" - cedo-ProgArchives

FRUMPY - ALL WILL BE CHANGED

"For those of you who were there when this album was released, FRUMPY was one of the classic rock bands with its distinctive vocalist Inga Rumpf. I was just 10 years old at that time and by the time I knew the band it was 5 years late already through their legendary hit “Singing Song”. From this song it was quite obvious that the unique quality of the band was basically at its lead singer, especially with her unique timbre. The story started when four musicians were all members of Irishman O' Brian-Docker's folkband The City Preachers, which was founded in Hamburg in 1965."
