9:30 FLY - 9:30 FLY
9:30 Fly - 9:30 Fly [1972]
UK group with the curious name recorded at the beginning in 1972 a disc folk-rock namesake of a psico-progressive packing, 9:30 Fly. All the songs are dominated from the harmony of the voices of Michael and his wife Barbara Wainwright.
In November the group act together with Velvet Underground in Malver Winter Gardens. Shortly after the Fly vanished without any trace. So this record on the highly collectable Ember label is nowadays a dificult to find rarity.

CHIC COREA – The Continents: Concerto for Jazz Quintet & Chamber Orchestra
Chick Corea – The Continents: Concerto for Jazz Quintet & Chamber Orchestra [2CD] (2012)
The Continents Concerto for Jazz Quintet and Chamber Orchestra features pianist Chick Corea performing with his combo and orchestra. The first disc features Corea’s six-part composition conceptualized around Africa, the Americas, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, and Europe. While Corea’s small group features such players as trombonist Steve Davis, saxophonist Tim Garland, bassist Hans Glawischnig, and drummer Marcus Gilmore, Corea is also backed by a handpicked orchestra conducted by Steve Mercurio and including members of the Harlem String Quartet and Imani Winds. This is truly a forward-thinking ensemble that can deftly fuse intricately arranged orchestral passages with more improvisatory jazz sections. The second disc features an extende solo piano series as well as several standards featuring Corea and his small group.

Southpaw guitarist Otis Rush made his debut in 1956 with a cover of Willie Dixon’s "I Can’t Quit You Baby", charting his first Top Ten R&B hit. Over the course of his 50-year career, Rush has established himself as one of the premiere bluesmen on the Chicago circuit.
Often credited with being one of the architects of the West side guitar style, Rush’s esteemed status as a prime Chicago innovator is eternally assured by his trademark sound. Blues fans have said that his combination of ringing, vibrato-enhanced guitar work with an intense vocal delivery is powerful enough to force the hair on the backs of their necks upwards in silent salute.
Otis Rush Live At Montreux 1986 features the Chicago blues legend at his spine-tingling best. For his first appearance at the Montreux Festival, Rush is joined on stage by fellow blues stars Eric Clapton and Luther Allison for a truly special show. The CD features nearly an hour-and-a-half of performances of Rush classics, including "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)", "Double Trouble" and many more.

WIDESPREAD PANIC / PORCH SONGS VOL # 9 - Two Rivers Auditorium, Grand Junction, CO - 06/10/1996
6/10/96 Two Rivers Auditorium, Grand Junction, CO
Another visit to 1996 brings us the 9th volume of Porch Songs….and another amazing performance in the process.
Widespread Panic made Colorado their second home a long time ago. They’ve probably played every town and venue in the state…..from the true hole in the walls to the likes of Red Rocks and Denver’s Pepsi Center. No matter the season of the year or how remote the venue, the boys always came ready to play. On a Monday night in June of 1996, Grand Junction was the place….and a seamless performance was in the making.
Pretty much Old School defined, this show is all about the connective tissue between the tunes and the magic of improvisation. Some of the segues turn on a dime while some evolve from nowhere. Right out of the gate we get a taste of what’s in store with the Glory Fishwater opener…..the jam out of Glory charges into Fishwater and it’s game on. With a smooth rhythmic buildup from L.a. into Weight of the World, the band is locked in and scorching the set. From the start of The Last Straw, the band skillfully takes us on a non-stop ride….with Dirty Business effortlessly sandwiched into Stop Go and then closing the set with Pigeons right on into Bowlegged Woman.
The second set was no different in how it set up and played out. Opening with Tall Boy, the segue afterward finds JoJo playing out a backwards Hatfield intro before the rest of the band joins him for the real deal. From there, Radio Child and Pilgrims bring us to a turn on a dime beginning to Blight and then a rager through and through with B of D, Airplane and then a crazy Pusherman jam into the Drums. Of course, Pusherman came back around before Conrad closed this set. The Postcard encore said it all…”I don’t ever want to leave!”….and they didn’t as they stuck around for a great rendition of Stag-O-Lee.
This show just brings it all together….musicianship, intent, patience and that unending love between the stage and those lucky enough to have found themselves in Grand Junction on that Monday night…..and once again, the boys proved a point… don’t miss a Colorado show…no matter what day of the week it might be!!!

THE STEEL WHEELS – Lay Down, Lay Low
The Steel Wheels – Lay Down, Lay Low (2012)
With a sound sitting comfortably between Old Crow Medicine Show and newer forms of bluegrass, The Steel Wheels of Harrisonburg, VA provide a unique listening experience. Comprised of four guys with backgrounds ranging from Mennonite Gospel quartets to concert bands and orchestras, the members of this group (Trent Wagler, Jay Lapp, Eric Brubaker, and Brian Dickel) are joined by Oliver Craven to create a distinctive sound. On this, their fourth album as a group, The Steel Wheels have included a wide array of material. While all of their songs are rooted in traditional music of some sort, they seem to draw from every aspect of American music. Fast-paced bluegrassy instrumentals like Lapp’s tune Fridley’s Gap, lay alongside powerful-sounding harmonies and Gospel influences on…
Rain in the Valley. Hints of blues and jazz show up throughout the album, making several songs feel soulful and smooth. Spider Wings is extremely interesting, with a percussive rhythm that at times sounds almost like a rap beat. Other songs are more subdued, featuring clawhammer banjo, peaceful melodies and a bowed bass line. Despite the wide array of approaches, Lay Down Lay Low is still a cohesive album; the Wheels make jazzy beats fit in right beside mandolin-led instrumentals.
