Born to Sing: No Plan B marks Van Morrison's 35th album and his return to Blue Note Records. Morrison released What's Wrong with This Picture? for Blue Note back in 2003. He re-signed to legendary jazz label in large part because musician and producer Don Was signed on to head it. Featuring ten new songs, Morrison plays guitar, alto saxophone, and occasional keyboards. Employing his trademark Celtic soul, the album also showcases incursions into jazz and blues -- and sometimes all three within the same tune. Morrison recorded the sessions in Belfast, and produced them. He used his road band augmented by guest musicians.

Grateful Dead - 1988-09-24 - Madison Square Garden, NY (FM)

As promised earlier, here’s the Grateful Dead from September 24, 1988, 24 years ago today, performing a benefit show at Madison Square Garden to help save the rainforest. It was only fitting for MSG to be the site of this benefit since the venue had a long tradition of hosting concerts for social change. For example, the "The World' Greatest Arena" was the site of what is considered the first large scale rock benefit show, The Concert For Bangladesh in 1971. The Garden also hosted The MUSE concerts in 1979, The ARMS Concerts in 1983 and would be the site of the Concert For New York in 2001 in the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy. For the rain forest benefit, The Dead were joined by an unusual assortment of special guests, making this one of the most unique concerts they ever played. Former Stones guitarist Mick Taylor sat in with the band during West LA Fadeway and Little Red Rooster. Suzanne Vega, famous for the tune Luka, sang Chinese Bones and Neighborhood Girls. Daryl Hall and John Oats joined the Dead to perform Every Time She Goes Away and What's Going On. Opening act Bruce Hornsby sat in during Not Fade Away, while old pal Jack Cassady from the Jefferson Airplane joined in on Good Lovin' and Knockin' On Heaven’s Door. Download this FM broadcast to hear the Dead and friends do their part for the rainforest, then go here to make your own contribution.

The recordings that made up the original Live at Keystone albums by Jerry Garcia, Merl Saunders, John Kahn, and Bill Vitt took place over two nights in July of 1973. The band had been playing a regular gig at the famed San Francisco venue for some time, but it was here that it gelled. Their program was a wide range of covers from Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come" to Motown numbers, Bob Dylan songs, jazz standards, and even a wholly improvised jam. Recorded by the Grateful Dead's sound engineers Betty Cantor and Rex Jackson, the first release was issued in late 1973, compiled from the "best" of both nights. In 1988, two volumes called Keystone Encores were released on three discs. This deluxe four-disc package contains remastered versions of all the material from both those concerts presented in original running order. In restores the three-and-a-half-minute jam "Space" with the full, nearly 14-minute version, now entitled "Merl's Tune." In addition, there are six more previously unreleased selections. All are different takes of songs that were featured on the earlier sets, including "The Harder They Come," "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry," "My Funny Valentine," "Merl's Tune," "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)," and "Someday Baby." Taking it all in, it's fascinating to hear how complementary Garcia and Saunders were, and the degree to which they trusted one another in moving a set arrangement in another direction on the spot. Contrast the two versions of "My Funny Valentine." On the latter one, Saunders shifts tonalities from a straight, subdued reading toward a more modal and exploratory one. Garcia responds by extending the tune's entire harmonic reach. The rhythm section, too, is unshakable -- check their astonishing interplay and shifting time signatures on the first version of "Merl's Tune." There are many surprises to be found here, not the least of which is the remastered sound by Paul Blakemore, who retained the atmosphere that made the original recordings so appealing. His attention to detail in dynamics, textures, and presence is noteworthy. This box also includes a poster, a pin, a coaster, and a "scratch book" -- it seems matchbooks are no longer allowed. The definitive presentation of these recordings underscores what a historic -- if low-key -- partnership this was. The music, by any standard, is simply excellent.

WILCO - Roadcase 008

Wilco – Roadcase 008 (2012)

As Wilco’s studio output remains constant in release, there is a widening gap between their earlier works and the last couple albums.
Thankfully, they have remained as voracious as ever on the road and consistently put on one of the best live shows in rock and roll.
Taking a cue from other bands that generate a live cult following because of their ability to stay ‘fresh’ on the road by playing varying set lists while maintaining a deep familiarity with their back catalogue, Wilco has released high quality recordings of many of their Summer concerts for public consumption.
Wilco, unlike Pearl Jam and Phish, are releasing random shows in a series called Roadcase, which at the time of writing, has eight volumes.

Recorded live at Highland Bowl in Rochester, NY on August 3, 2012.

Comment: Drums And Tuba opened. Trey wore Fishman's signature dress,
Les wore a pig mask for the first two songs, then a wore a black hat.
Stewart's face was painted

%Trey quotes much of "Stash" in jam
*The Kinks cover (Trey sang)
**The Police cover (Les sang 1 verse)
# Trey was very chatty. He played his "musical costume" and sang lyrics to several
Jon Fishman classics including "Love You," "Bike," and "Cracklin' Rosie."
Trey then mentioned that "you too can own the entire Jon Fishman catalogue for only $19.95!"
Trey then introduced Les as "someone who really sucks" and then introduced Stewart and said
"When I was 15 my biggest dream was to be in a band with Stewart Copeland. He was my cream dream.
Stewart 'The guy who has sold way more recordings than Les or I' Copeland."
Show had a very special vibe to it. The band was visibly animated and festive.
