GOLDEN EARRING - GOLDEN HITS [4CD SET]

Golden Earring – Golden Hits [4CD Boxset] (2011)
Best known in the U.S. for their hard rock material, Golden Earring have been the most popular homegrown band in the Netherlands since the mid-’60s, when they were primarily a pop group. The group was founded by guitarist/vocalist George Kooymans and bassist/vocalist Rinus Gerritsen, then schoolboys, in 1961; several years and personnel shifts later, they had their first Dutch hit, “Please Go,” and in 1968 hit the top of the Dutch charts for the first of many times with “Dong-Dong-Di-Ki-Di-Gi-Dong,” a song that broadened their European appeal. By 1969, the rest of the lineup had stabilized, with lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Barry Hay and drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk. They experimented with their style for several years before settling on…
straightforward hard rock initially much like that of the Who, who invited them to open their 1972 European tour. Golden Earring signed to the Who’s Track label, which released a compilation of Dutch singles, Hearing Earring, helping the group break through in England. Released in 1974, the Moontan LP spawned the single “Radar Love,” a Dutch number one, U.K. Top Ten, and U.S. number 13 hit.

LOS LOBOS - TIN CAN TRUST

The Grammy-winning East L.A. band Los Lobos is releasing Tin Can Trust, their first collection of new original material in four years. Featuring powerful rock 'n' roll, blistering blues, two Spanish-language tracks, and even a Grateful Dead cover, the album is classic Lobos through and through. One of the most remarkable strengths of Los Lobos over the past thirty-plus years has been its progressive penchant for successfully experimenting with different genres, instruments and production techniques in the studio. Tin Can Trust—a pleasing jaunt through slow, dark psychedelic blues-rock; upbeat cumbia and norteno  numbers, and even a rambling instrumental fuzz-guitar rave-up—features wildly different drum sounds on nearly every track, and a profound intensity that’s fluid through even the most drastic changes in tempo and instrumentation.

LOS LOBOS - El Cancionero Mas y Mas [4CD Box Set] (2000)

The Los Lobos fan might reasonably ask what--besides length and a wonderful accompanying booklet--Más y Más has over 1993's two-CD Just Another Band from East L.A.. The answer is longwinded: here are album tracks (anywhere from four to eight from each studio album), outtakes, demos, and live cuts, as well as selections from tribute albums, soundtracks, and side projects. Some highlights that weren't on the earlier collection include a 1983 rockabilly sizzler, "We're Gonna Rock," the similarly charged "Rip It Up" (an '87 outtake from La Bamba), Richard Thompson's "Down Where the Drunkards Roll" (from the '94 tribute Beat the Retreat), a live take on the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows" (from a '93 television tribute), "Route 90" (from the pristine Lobos children's collection, Papa's Dream), and a '97 live version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On" with Sheryl Crow guesting on vocals. This doesn't even take into account the songs from six soundtracks and a personal fave, "Alone in a Crowd" (from I Only Wrote This Song for You: A Tribute to Johnny Thunders) and a fab take on Doug Sahm's "She's About a Mover" from '96. This and more pushes Más y Más out of the group of multi-CD boxes devoted to defunct artists and into the camp of justly deserved career overviews created while the subjects are still in full flight. - amazon.com

The only 4-CD collection spanning the legendary East L.A. band’s entire quarter-century recording career! Includes the best sides from nine albums, plus previously unreleased recordings, live tracks, cuts from movie soundtracks, tribute and promo albums.

AFFINITY - Live Instrumentals 1969

Affinity - Live Instrumentals 1969

A magnificent piece of archive scouring, Live Instrumentals 1969 was recorded during the month or so that Affinity vocalist Linda Hoyle spent recuperating from an operation on her vocal chords, leaving bandmates Mo Foster, Mike Jupp, Lynton Naiff, and Grant Serpell to fill their time with a month-long residency at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London. Nine of the tracks here, including tumultuous jazz-rock versions of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" (a staple of the like-minded Brian Auger's repertoire around the same time), and "Fever" were recorded there; four more were taken from a period-radio broadcast, and the disc wraps up with the instrumental rampage "On Green Dolphin Street," recorded by the University of Sussex Jazz Trio, from which the original Affinity ultimately arose. A great-sounding album, Live Instrumentals is further distinguished by a sleeve that hangs perfectly alongside the band's own debut album.

THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS - Close Up the Honky Tonks [1974]

The Flying Burrito Brothers - Close Up the Honky Tonks [1974]

Close Up the Honky Tonks is a compilation double-LP by country rock artist The Flying Burrito Brothers, which was released in 1974. By this time, the Flying Burrito Brothers no longer existed, having been dissolved by Rick Roberts in 1973.

This compilation was released after Gram Parsons' death in 1973, presumably to capitalize on posthumous interest in Parsons' music, though the compilation does include cuts from the Chris Hillman-led post-Parsons era as well (on Side Four). This compilation still holds relevance into modern times as some of these songs have yet to be released anywhere else.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector [1963]

VA - A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector [1963]

A Christmas Gift for You from Philles Records (later re-released as A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector) is an album of Christmas songs, produced by Phil Spector, and originally released as Philles 4005 in 1963. Spector treated a series of mostly secular Christmas standards to his trademark "Wall of Sound" treatment, and the selections feature the vocal performances of Spector's regular artists during this period. It is one of only twelve long-playing records released on the Philles label, peaking at number 13 on Billboard magazine's special, year-end, weekly Christmas Albums sales chart in December 1963. The album was reissued by Apple Records in 1972, with different cover art and retitled Phil Spector's Christmas Album; this version went to number 6 on Billboard's special Christmas Albums sales chart in December of that year.

However, the album was a relative failure at the time and was released on 22 November 1963, the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Original pressings are now scarce and collectable, now selling for $400–$500 in excellent condition.
