BOB DYLAN & GEORGE HARRISON - Almost Went To See Elvis (1997)
This is an afternoon studio session between George Harrison, Bob Dylan and some friends at Columbia Studio B (NYC) on May 1, 1970 while Bob was drumming up material for his New Morning project. The sound quality is absolutely perfect in every respect. There are a few remarkable performances here, particularly Da-Doo-Run Run (Bob & George duet), the Everly Brothers' classic All I Have To Do Is Dream, Song To Woody, and the Beatles' Yesterday (which is hard to believe he actually sang!) Overall, it's a very enjoyable way to spend an hour. ”
All of the material here is from two consecutive sessions with George Harrison, with the master tapes reportedly missing from the Columbia archives. They are clearly the source of this recording (contrary to Possum Belly Overalls), and the music is very laidback but wonderful. Listen to Dylan mumbling his way through Cupid, while his rendition of Song to Woody is pretty mesmerising. One too many mornings and Your true love (the only song on which George Harrison's voice is actually audible) are the highlights of this set. George acted as a sideplayer rather than as a collaborator on these sessions, and it's the entertaining genius of Dylan that's mostly on display here.
