This is the part of the stream of essential Traffic performances 1967-1974.
This recording was made while the band was taping shows for their soon-to-be-released On The Road double CD. For the tours and records made around this time ('72-'74), Traffic was augmented by three members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, a group that had provided backing on some of the greatest rock and R&B hits of the 1960s and '70s, including many classic Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield records. This same month, Traffic released Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory, which went gold and reached the American Top 10.
By adding David Hood on bass, Roger Hawkins on drums and Barry Beckett on keyboards, the group's core members -Winwood, percussionist/vocalist Jim Capaldi and sax player/flutist Chris Wood - found an enormous amount of freedom to play their respective instruments. Many Traffic classics are here, including "Empty Pages," "Evening Blue," "Forty Thousand Headman," "Glad" and "Freedom Rider," but there is still enough room for several, then-new tracks to be featured, including "Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory," "Rock and Roll Stew," "Roll Right Stones," "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired" and "Light Up Or Leave Me Alone."
For fans of Traffic, Winwood, or classic rock in general, it doesn't get much better than this.

This is the part of the stream of essential Traffic performances 1967-1974.
This is written about a GD concert thouht for years to be Anderson Theater, 11-23-1970 with Winwood as a guest.
This is the concert formerly thought to have taken place on 11/23/70 at the Anderson Theater in New York City. This show has been shrouded in mystery and confusion over the last 30 years ever since it first entered circulation in 1973. However, fresh research has unveiled what is most likely the true story behind this classic Grateful Dead show.
There are several pieces of evidence which now point directly to the
"11/23/70 Anderson Theater" show being correctly identified as Fillmore East 11/16/70. 1) Traffic has been confirmed, in a letter written by the Kleinhans Music Hall, as having played at the Kleinhans Music Hall, Buffalo, NY on 11/23/70. This firmly places them out of New York City on that date. Thanks to Greg Shaw for this help. 2) Bill Graham introduces the Dead. The identification of his voice is clear, as never before, on this new transfer. Bill Graham and the owner of the Anderson Theater were not friendly with each other and Bill Graham would never have introduced the Grateful Dead in the Anderson Theater. 3) A 1:55 snippet of Hot Tuna playing Hesitation Blues precedes the Dead's show on the first generation 10" reel. 4) After Bob Weir sings the Frozen Logger off-mic, several people on stage can be heard attempting to get Jack Casady to join in saying, "Hey Casady, why don't you play" and "Hey Jack, hey Jack, c'mon up". Hot Tuna played on 11/16/70 at the Fillmore and they are not known to have played at the Anderson Theater. 5) An eyewitness who attended the 11/16/70 Fillmore show clearly recalls Steve Winwood and Jorma Kaukonen sitting in with the Dead. 6) Music was commonly played over the P.A. between sets at the Fillmore to promote upcoming shows. Elton John played at the Fillmore East the following weekend, November 20th and 21st as the warm up for Leon Russell. This was his first New York City appearance. 7) On page 382 in his book Long Strange Trip, Dennis McNally mentions this show as being from the Fillmore East, 11/16/70.
According to Corry Arnold on 11/14/70 at the Fillmore East after Frank Zappa's performance Grace Slick came on stage and announced on behalf of Bill Graham that the Dead and the Airplane would be playing a surprise concert at the Fillmore East on Monday, November 16th. On the 16th the very pregnant Slick was unable to make the gig but Hot Tuna substituted for the Airplane. This is why this show does not appear in ads and playbills etc." http://www.filefactory.com/file/72igb2ig7ctd/Trffc_11-16-1970%20%28SBD%29.rar

Traffic - Stockholm, Sweden, 1967
We go a few years back to find another show at the Konserthuset in Stockholm. This was on September 12, 1967 and some months earlier Traffic had released an excellent first album, Mr. Fantasy.
This concert is also known as Traffic Jam, a name certainly given due to the car traffic switch, from driving on the left-hand side of the road to the right, that occurred in Sweden only 9 days before the concert.

After Blind Faith ran out of steam, Steve Winwood reassembled Traffic. But with Dave Mason already working on his solo career, the band reconvened as a three-piece with Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood. Right after recording the fourth Traffic studio LP John Barleycorn Must Die, the band debuted the new songs on the BBC “In Concert” program hosted by John Peel.
Recorded live before an audience at the Paris Theatre in London on April 30th, several sources have been in circulation. A Westwood One “Superstars Of Rock” transcription disc has excellent sound but is missing “Stranger To Himself” and the John Peel commentary between numbers.
Another source is a BBC transcription LP containing the complete broadcast including the song and Peel’s commentary. The sound is a bit more dull than the Westwood One disc, however. The only silver disc devoted to this gig is Pop Spectacular: BBC 1970 issued several years ago from an incomplete BBC transcription disc, missing “Stranger To Himself.”
In A Field Of Their Own on Godfather is a marked improvement over the no label. It sounds much nicer and louder, but is has the complete gig.
The trio of Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood switch instruments throughout the broadcast and even features Wood playing sax as the bass line in “Medicated Goo.” They play the yet to be released new album except for ”Stranger To Himself” and the only older songs played are “No Time To Live,” “Pearly Queen” and “Medicated Goo.” DJ John Peel offers commentary between each song leading the listener through the various instrument changes and commenting on the songs they are playing.
The show beings with Peel saying, ”Of all the stories of groups breaking up constantly in the music papers it’s really nice to have one of the all time great ones get together again. And it’s even nicer to have them on this program. Traffic.”
“Who Knows What Tomorrow May Bring” sounds tremendous in the recording with intricate organ lines weaving around the rhythm section. “I hope you agree with me that Traffic are playing better than ever. Very relaxed and really nice. This is from their second LP together released in 1968? Peel says before “No Time To Live.”
Before “Medicated Goo” Peel explains, “On this next number there is a certain amount of change of instrumentation. To begin with Chris will be playing the bass part on tenor saxophone as a result of electronic trickery too complex for me to explain it to you. Not that I understand it myself. Steve will be playing guitar and Steve and Jim will be singing it.”
With its uptempo beat and happy melody, it is a good change of pace from the rest of the material which is both very contemplative and serious. On “John Barleycorn” they sing the lyrics from the fifteenth century rendition of the song but they mess up the lyrics at the end with Capaldi singing the correct version while Winwood sings the last verse causing them to fall apart.
Peel introduces “Pearly Queen” as one of his favorite Traffic numbers and afterwards compliments Winwood’s guitar playing by saying, “so if you’re a guitarist and you think you gotta go on playing those same old blues riffs at ear shattering volume in order to make it, you don’t and that’s proof of it.”
Before the ending Peel remarks how great it is to see a band actually smiling as they play. Traffic close with the “Glad” and “Freedom Rider” medley. The spectacular contrast in styles in the tracks comes through clearly and Wood’s flute solo sounds tremendous against the organ.
Godfather also include several rare demo tracks from the sessions for Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys. They are in excellent sound quality and reveal the band to be very happy, laughing as they work on the new songs for what would be their most famous LP.
In A Field Of Their Own is another quality Godfather release worth having. It is a marked improvement over the past release and the packaging is really gorgeous with the barley theme and copious amounts of liner notes. http://fp.io/57efa7d3/
