SPOCK'S BEARD - ''THE OBLIVION PARTICLE''

Spock’s Beard – The Oblivion Particle (2015)

The Oblivion Particle finds the band answering the needs of their creations by utilizing the considerable versatility of each member.  In addition to Ted Leonard’s soaring vocals and Dave Meros’ distinctive bass,  Alan Morse adds autoharp, banjolele, electric sitar and mandolin to his array of instruments, drummer Jimmy Keegan takes over lead vocals on “Bennett Built a Time Machine” and Ryo expands his arsenal of keyboard sounds throughout the album.  In addition, virtuoso Kansas violinist David Ragsdale lends his touch to the album’s majestic closer, “Disappear.”

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Spock's Beard is a progressive rock band formed in 1993 in Los Angeles who play a brand of progressive rock which draws on influences ranging from classical, pop, rock, jazz/fusion and R&B. Spock’s Beard return with the same lineup for the band’s twelfth album (including vocalist Ted Leonard, also of Transatlantic) for an album that captures the band’s core essence while stretching out into some exciting new avenues. With The Oblivion Particle, Spock’s Beard prove themselves an amazingly compelling band some 20 years after their formation, and one that continues to be a leader in the prog rock field.

BIOGRAPHY/AMG
by David White
Spock's Beard began in 1992 when brothers Neal (lead vocals) and Al Morse (guitar) teamed up with drummer Nick D'Virgilio. After self-financing their first album, bassist Dave Meros joined, and The Light was recorded in 1994. Consisting of four lengthy songs, this debut album was well received by progressive rock fans, but received little public acclaim. Ryo Okumoto joined in 1995 to play keyboards. In 1996, The Official Bootleg was released, a live performance containing the entire first album plus one song from the upcoming second album. 1996 also saw the band sign with various record labels around the world, in addition to releasing Beware of Darkness, which contains the same style of music, but in shorter pieces (all ten minutes or less, except for the 15-plus-minute last track). Spock's Beard's third studio album, The Kindness of Strangers, was released at the end of 1997; Day for Night followed in 1999 and V was issued a year later. Deciding they had the experience and chops to attempt a concept album, they spent the next few years putting together Snow. The double album revolved around the title character, an albino teenager that could possibly be the messiah. Taking a much more detailed approach to the material, the band had a difficult two years writing the album and was rewarded with a strong promotional push from Metal Blade Records. Following Snow, Neal Morse became a born again Christian and left the band. The remaining members quickly regrouped, however, with D'Virgilio assuming the lead vocal duties and managed to release Feeling Euphoria the following year. 2004 saw the rerelease of their first three albums and in 2005 they delivered both a new studio offering (Ocatane) and Live in 2005: Gluttons for Punishment.

SPOCK'S BEARD - THE LIGHT

Neil Morse composed most of “The Light”, with the exception of the more traditional closing track “On the Edge”, within a week or so. He asked his brother to play on the demos and at first he didn’t seem very into it. Then he called a few weeks later and said, ‘Oh yeah, this stuff is killer…Let’s put a band together!’ — and Spock’s Beard was born. Enter drummer Nick D’Virgilio and bassist Dave Meros. The Morse brothers handle hammond organ, mellotron and other keyboard duties and out comes their debut album “The Light”.
The album introduces listeners to many of the musical elements that would become Spock’s Beard trademarks. Consisting of just four songs (only one shorter than seven minutes), The Light demonstrates the Beard’s desire to bridge its tight grasp of 70s progressive with contemporary charm, chops and wit – all characteristics in short supply from American bands at the time.
The title track is a 15+ minute suite with varied sections and themes that are in turn sensitive and pretty, powerful, and humourous. A tasty, generous and satisfying helping of pure progressive!
“Go the Way You Go” is while somewhat more pop/accessible than the other material here, it is still heavyweight progressive rock. The speaker-shaking ending has a majestic feel that would be especially effective live.
At over 23 minutes, “The Water” is the longest piece on the album. This suite contains some of the album’s heaviest moments, and the crunchy hammond riffs at the beginning are particularly welcome to old rockers’ ears. A very varied piece, it holds interest despite its length.
The final number, “On the Edge,” at only six minutes, is, perforce, not as “epic” as the tracks that precede it, but is still a terrific, hard-rocking song that brings this excellent album to a strong finish.
As debut albums go this one’s a blue-ribbon winner and an exemplary place to start for the Spock’s Beard neophyte.
