New LP > ? transfee > CDR > flac (level 8)

Credits:
All tunes from Spokane show on March 28, 1976.

Byron Berline – fiddle, mandolin, & vocals
Sam Bush – mandolin, fiddle, & vocals
Mark O’Connor – fiddle, guitar, & mandolin

Backup on triple fiddle tunes by Custer's Grass Band of Spokane, Washington, (Bob Ashbury - banjo, Les Panther- guitar, Dave Hackwith- bass), with Don Thompson guesting on mandolin.

Recorded Spokane, WA March 28, 1976.  Recorded & edited by Marty O’Connor.  Mastered & sequenced by Larry Willman, Seattle, WA.

Huckleberry Hornpipe & Birmingham Fling written by Byron Berline.

Notes:  I bought this LP on eBay unopened in 2006.  By 2007 I gave it to a friend to convert to CDR for me.  I don't know what sort of rig he used (sorry folks) but the transfer is clean and I have applied no click removal, equalization, noise reduction, etc. to the files.

This record was released, I think, on Mark O'Connor's own record label that apparently didn't last long as this is (again, I think) the second of two releases.  It has not been reissued, and in fact very little information exists on it on the web.

The Word file is the "artwork" I created for the LP; if you print it out it will fit nicely into a slimline jewel case.

The cover shows Byron playing mandolin, and both Bush and O'Connor on guitar.  All are seated.  If anyone has a scan of the cover please email me at mando_dan at yahoo.com.

SAM BUSH - Howlin at the Moon'

Sam Bush - Howlin at the Moon'
A whirling dervish onstage, [Sam Bush] flails like Jimmy Page, conjuring up mesmerizing polyrhythmic chops and trailblazing solos.... Howlin' showcases Bush's facility as a player and composer, as well as his stylistic sense of adventure. As usual, Bush meshes bluegrass, funk, jazz, reggae, and blues into a set more diverse than most people's record collections.

In the church of bluegrass, mandolinist and fiddler Sam Bush has long been a nonconformist--or at least the musical equivalent of a Cafeteria Catholic. In 1971, at 19, the rhythmic demon founded New Grass Revival, and for the next 18 years alternately amazed and enraged traditionalists, extending the band's purview to reggae, jazz, and rock. Bush's third solo album finds him in top, blindingly fast form: note the high-level cheer of "Hold On" or "Face Tomorrow." On the instrumental collaborations with long-time pals such as Bela Fleck and Jerry Douglas, the mandolin-meister shines, as ever. But why is it that he never gets enough credit as a violinist? The wailing intro to "Crossing the Transippi" demonstrates that Bush plays second fiddle to no one. --Kerry Fried
