REVIEW
by Stephen Thomas Erlewine (AllMusic)
Long Voyage Home: The Silver Anniversary Collection is nearly the definitive Joe Cocker anthology, covering his recording career from the late '60s to the mid-'90s, featuring material from all the labels he recorded for -- A&M, Elektra, Island, and Capitol. After an early single from 1964 (a version of the Beatles' "I'll Cry Instead"), the set skips ahead to his late-'60s recordings with his Mad Dogs & Englishmen troupe. From there, the collection doesn't miss many of Cocker's greatest hits or favorite album tracks. In addition to the familiar tracks, there are a handful of unreleased cuts that are tantalizing for the collector; casual fans will find them of marginal interest.

BIOGRAPHY

After starting out as an unsuccessful pop singer (working under the name Vance Arnold), Joe Cocker found his niche singing rock and soul in the pubs of England with his superb backing group, the Grease Band. He hit number one in the U.K. in November 1968 with his version of the Beatles' "A Little Help from My Friends." His career really took off after he sang that song at Woodstock in August 1969. A second British hit came with a version of Leon Russell's "Delta Lady" in the fall of 1969 (by then, Russell was Cocker's musical director) and both of his albums, With a Little Help from My Friends (April 1969) and Joe Cocker! (November 1969), went gold in America. In 1970, his cover of the Box Tops hit "The Letter" became his first U.S. Top Ten. Cocker's first peak of success came when Russell organized the Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour of 1970, featuring Cocker and over 40 others and resulting in a third gold album and a concert film. Subsequent efforts were less popular, and problems with alcohol (both on- and off-stage) reduced Cocker's once-powerful voice to a croaking rasp.

Cocker returned to the U.S. Top Ten in 1975, with the romantic ballad "You Are So Beautiful" and topped the charts in 1982 via a duet with Jennifer Warnes on "Up Where We Belong" (the theme from the film An Officer and a Gentleman). He still charted during the '90s, albeit with less frequency than he did in the '70s and '80s. Across from Midnight arrived in 1997, followed by No Ordinary World two years later. Respect Yourself appeared in 2002, and the covers album Heart & Soul followed in 2004. The European release Hymn for My Soul, which featured cover versions of songs by Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and John Fogerty, was issued on Parlophone in 2007. His complete Live at Woodstock performance was released in 2009. In 2010, Hard Knocks -- his first studio album in three years -- appeared in Europe. Cocker's 23rd studio album, Fire It Up, was issued in November 2012 on Sony. It was produced by Matt Serletic, known for his work with Collective Soul, Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty, and numerous others. Slightly over two years later, however, on December 22, 2014, he succumbed to lung cancer.

JOE COCKER - Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen - The Complete Fillmore East Concerts

                                                                   2 SHOWS ON 6 CDS
Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen turned 35 years old in 2005. Commemorating this birthday was the release of the limited edition Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen – The Complete Fillmore East Concerts, documenting the entire four shows (on 6 discs) preformed on Friday, March 27th and Saturday, March 28th, 1970 at New York City’s Fillmore East Auditorium and Dance Hall.
The Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour was a hastily organized appendage to a longer tour Cocker was completing in early 1970 in support of With A Little Help From My Friends and Joe Cocker!, which were released in 1969. The subsequent months had been dedicated to a grueling promotional tour for both albums with his Grease Band, anchored by pianist Chris Stainton.
As legend would have it, Cocker arrived in Los Angeles on March 11, 1970 for some rest and relaxation after the stressful and decadently excessive tour. While in LA, Cocker intended to spend his time resting and putting together a new band. However, on March 12th, Cocker’s manager Dee Anthony revealed other plans for him.
Anthony announced that he had booked a seven-week (48 nights in 52 cities) tour set to commence in eight days, on March 20th in Detroit, Michigan. Anthony further explained that should Cocker not agree to the tour, the Musician’s Union, immigration authorities, and concert promoters involved would be disinclined to allow him back in the States to tour in the future. Needless to say, Cocker was caught flat-footed, exhausted, and perhaps a bit burned out.
Seeing an opportunity to help his friend and promote his own growing front-man status, famed producer Leon Russell assembled a group made up of members Cocker’s Grease Band plus several notable studio wonks and became their musical director. After several 10-plus hour rehearsals with his new twenty-person band, Cocker and Company hit the studio, recorded the single ”The Letter/Space Captain” and then took to the road, first in Detroit, Michigan and ultimately last in San Bernardino, California.
The concert tapes that ultimately became Mad Dogs and Englishmen were derived from the four shows performed at The Fillmore East eight days into the tour. The original two-LP set assembled 14 performances from the 61 pieces performed over the Good Friday and Holy Saturday, 1970. Notable in this original release were those songs that were not included. For instance, where was “With a Little Help from My Friends?” Cocker had slayed the Woodstock crowd just eight months prior to Mad Dogs with the Beatles’ classic as well as Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released.” The Beatles’ “Something” was quite a standout from Joe Cocker! but was not included.
Fortunately, these songs have been restored on The Complete Fillmore East Concerts and digitally remastered. Also restored are compelling performances of The Band’s “The Weight,” John Sebastian’s “Darlin’ Be Home Soon,” “Further on Up the Road,” performed by Don Preston and “Let it Be,” performed by Claudia Lennear. Also added are Leon Russell’s “Hummingbird” and “Dixie Lullaby.” These pieces have the added distinction that they were not repeated in the course of the four shows. They are evidence of the loose circumstances surrounding the performances that added to the excitement of the “Rock & Roll Show.”
The additional performances of previously released music plus the remaining unreleased material represents an important document of the beautifully decadent state of Rock & Roll in the early 1970s, before the music was antiseptically homogenized and stripped of its inherent danger and romance. This is bracing, exciting music newly presented with pristine sonics and rowdy ambiance.
It has never been a secret that Joe Cocker was no song writer. Save from a few compositions (“Black-Eyed Blues,” “High Time We Went”) the singer produced precious few originals of note. But that is no matter. It is Cocker’s voice, That Voice that does the trick. Cocker is a superb, no, supreme interpreter of other’s music in the same way that Frank Sinatra was, and this is no mean feat. Where Jimi Hendrix might be considered the definitive interpreter of Bob Dylan and Johnny Winter of the Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker can be considered the last word in interpreting Randy Newman, Dave Mason, Jackson Browne, and yes, the Beatles. This is demonstrated by his riveting treatments of “With a Little Help from My Friends,” “She Came in Through the Bathroom Window,” and “Something.”
While Ray Charles needs no interpretation, Cocker served splendidly as an introduction to the Genius with his covers of “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” “Sticks and Stones,” and “Drown in My Own Tears.” Ditto for Sam and Dave and Otis Redding (“When Something is Wrong with My Baby,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long”). It was perhaps Cocker more than anyone who reintroduced America to its musical divinity. This is Joe Cocker’s true and indispensable value.

JOE COCKER - THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION 1968-2003

John Robert "Joe" Cocker (20 May 1944 – 22 December 2014) was an English rock and blues singer, who came to popularity in the 1960s, and was known for his gritty voice, his spasmodic body movement in performance and his cover versions of popular songs, particularly those of the Beatles. His cover of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" reached number one in the UK in 1968, and he performed the song live at Woodstock in 1969. His version also became the theme song for the TV series The Wonder Years. His 1975 hit single, "You Are So Beautiful", reached number five in the US. Cocker is the recipient of several awards, including a 1983 Grammy Award for his US number one "Up Where We Belong", a duet with Jennifer Warnes. In 1993 he was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Male, and in 2008 he received an OBE at Buckingham Palace for services to music. Cocker was ranked #97 on Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers list.

Last year he broke all his own records in arenas across Europe, with a number one album in Germany and what was to be his final concert in Hammersmith, London, in June. Marshall said "he was without the doubt the greatest rock/soul voice ever to come out of Britain- and remained the same man throughout his life.

"Hugely talented, a true star, but a kind and humble man who loved to perform. Anyone who ever saw him live will never forget him."

JOE COCKER and The Grease Band - ON AIR

The Grease Band was a rock band that evolved out of Joe Cocker's backing band. They recorded two albums in the 1970s. They are probably most widely known for their performance of The Beatles song, With A Little Help From My Friends, with Joe Cocker at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. With respect to their self-titled first album, reviewer Joe Viglione said though this is far from commercial, it is important to have this document of the guys who made magic behind Joe Cocker in 1969 and Marianne Faithfull in the mid-'70s. Recorded in London, it is vintage stuff, and 100 years from its making will no doubt be respected for the historic and studious record that it is. The keyboard player was Chris Stainton, another Sheffield born man, known to his friends as Robin, who went on to tour extensively with Eric Clapton. The bassist was Alan Spenner, who went on to play in the UK white soul outfit Kokomo, with rhythm guitarist Neil Hubbard. Spenner is rumoured to be the first white man to be offered a session job at Motown Records. Drummer Bruce Rowland later joined Fairport Convention from 1975 through 1979. Henry McCullough was the lead guitarist, a role he later occupied in Paul McCartney's Wings, and continues today as a solo artist.

Recorded live at the BBC with the Grease Band in 1968-69.

In An age of flower and psychedelia,Joe Cocker was something different."He didn't look like any part of the pop scene at all,"said music mogul Denny Cordell,on first meeting the gasfitter-turned soulster."And then I heard him sing!"A record deal was signed,in April 1968 'Majorine' reached No.48 in the UK charts,in November 'With A Little Help from My Friends' hit No.1-and in the space of little more than a year Joe Cocker and The Grease Band went from playing for a few dozen students and steelworkers in Northern pubs to half a million hippies at Woodstock. That year-1968 to '69-is the period spanned by the sessions on this album.

Joe formed the first Grease Band in 1967.He'd fronted local groups in Sheffield for seven years,a record deal with Decca had fallen flat after one single in '64 and this was a last gasp effort to make his mark. The band's name came from an interview he read in Downbeat magazine with the soul/jazz organist Jimmy Smith, who described a musician as having "a lot of grease".Legend has it the first Grease Band gig was at a rugby club barbecue, where the side attraction was a piano-smashing concert.Joe brought in friends from his earlier bands-Vernon Nash on piano,Dave Memmott, drums and Frank Miles out of Dave Berry's Cruisers-but the decisive member, the man who would become Cocker's right-hand man and communicator of his musical ideas in the years to follow, was Chris Stainton.

Cocker and Stainton got down to writing songs.Joe:"We wrote in the daytime, instead of going to the pub.'Marjorine' and 'Change In Louise' and quite a few other tunes were written at that time."They left Sheffield and the first Grease Band behind and moved down to London, taking with them an eightteen year old keyboards prodigy Tomy Eyre.He recalls:"We were living in Sussex Gardens in a bed and breakfast, three in a room, and rehearsing on Westbourne Grove in a convertde cinema."Soon there were five in the room,as guitarist Micky Gee and drummer Tommy Reilly were brought in for the second incarnation of the Grease Band.

Joe's single,The Beatles''With A Little Help From My Friend' was released the same week as he recorded the first Top Gear BBC session. His vocal treatment and the unusual arrangement made an immediate impact on the public and the song catapulted him to fame-rather against the odds.'Cocker's Shocker' was the Melody Maker headline, the week it entred the Top Ten.The idea for doing the song in that way had come to Joe as he sat on the outside toilet at his parents' home in Sheffield, and Tommy Eyre had worked out the distinctive Bach-type intro.Nearly thirty years on,'With A Little Help' remains a feature of all Cocker shows.Joe:"The only time we did't do it,one night in Rome about fifteen years ago,the audience rioted...smashed the place up and stoned the coach as we tried to leave. So I thought we'd better keep it in!"

The new guitarist and drummer didn't work out and were soon replaced by Irishman,Henry McCulloch, and Kenny Slade,an exuberant characer whom Joe had known for years in Sheffield. The summer of '68 was spent on the road all over Britain, touring extesively and building up a stsunch following in universities, clubs and at festivals. They played a mix of originals and covers - including the two songs on this album which have never been released before now - 'Can't Be So Bad',cribbed from a Moby Grape album, and 'Run Shakers Life'.This is the Grease Band - Stainton,Eyre,McCulloch and Slade - that appears on the first Top Gear session, from October '68.

Success in Britain led to offers from across the Atlantic - but not before further changes in the line-up.Out went Tommy Eyre and Kenny Slade -"they were too jazzy,"recalls Joe.In came Alan Spenner on bass and Bruce Rowland on drums, with Chris Stainton moving from bass to keyboards.Everywhere in 1969 - from The Ed Sullivan Show on TV to gigs at Filmores East and West, through the mid-west and in front of massive crowds at rock extravaganzas like the Newport,Ddenver and Atlanta festivals,Joe and The Grease Band blazed their trail. After the crowning glory of Woodstock in mid-August they returned to London, where the September DLT and Top Gear sessions were recorded.

The track on these two sessions - 'Let's Get Stoned',a grest favourite in those heady days;'That's Your Business',another early Cocker/Stainton composition;'Hitchcock Railway';'Darling Be Home Soon' - Joe had shared the bill on several gigs with composer John Sebastian's band The Lovin' Spoonful, and the old 50s rocker 'Lawdy Miss Clawdy' - were all songs he had played throughout the summer tour and ones that would appear on his second album,Joe Cocker!

Which brings us to 'Hello Little Friend' and 'Delta Lady'...In 1969 Leon Russell was an L.A. session musician who had recently played piano for Delaney and Bonnie.A meeting was arranged and he invited Joe and Chris Stainton to his house, where he played them four songs. As a result Joe recorded 'Helo Little Friend' and 'Delta Lady',which Leon had written for his then lover,Rita Coolidge, for the Joe Cocker! album, with Russell playing guitar and piano on the backing tracks.Top Gear listners got a preview,Joe recording the programme the day before he appeared at the Isle of Wight Festival.

On this album,'On Air',Joe Cocker and The Grease Band can be heard at their best.Joe,untroubled by the demos that would drag him down over the next decade,is dynamic with a funky, uncomplicated backing. But a parting of the ways was inevitable. As Joe fell increasingly under Leon Russell's musical influence,he decided that he and The Grease Band were running out of steam.

He split with the band and flew back to Los Angeles to form Mad Dogs Englishmen.

BIOGRAPHY
by Cub Koda
After starting out as an unsuccessful pop singer (working under the name Vance Arnold), Joe Cocker found his niche singing rock and soul in the pubs of England with his superb backing group, the Grease Band. He hit number one in the U.K. in November 1968 with his version of the Beatles' "A Little Help from My Friends." His career really took off after he sang that song at the Woodstock festival in August 1969. Top Ten. Cocker's first peak of success came when Russell organized the "Mad Dogs & Englishmen" tour of 1970, featuring Cocker and over 40 others and resulting in a third gold album and a concert film. Subsequent efforts were less popular, and problems with alcohol (both on- and off-stage) reduced Cocker's once-powerful voice to a croaking rasp. But he returned to the U.S. Top Ten with the romantic ballad "You Are So Beautiful" in 1975 and topped the charts in a duet with Jennifer Warnes on "Up Where We Belong," the theme from the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman. He still charted during the '90s, albeit with less frequency than he did in the '70s and '80s, and has also continued to work throughout the new millennium. Across from Midnight arrived in 1997, followed by No Ordinary World two years later. Respect Yourself appeared in 2002, and the covers album Heart & Soul followed in 2004. The European release Hymn for My Soul, which features cover versions of songs by Stevie Wonder, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, and John Fogerty, was issued on Parlophone in 2007. His complete Live at Woodstock performance was released on CD in 2009. In 2010, Hard Knocks -- his first studio album in three years -- was released in Europe.
