IKO - IKO - BULLETS IN THE BONFIRE VOL. 1
THIS IS SOME BRILLIANT AND IMAGINATIVE GUMBO
Format: Audio CD
Iko Iko is a fresh sounding blues band from Florida. These guys have a cool sound
that covers everything from swampy blues, cajun, R&B, jazz, and rock and roll. Two
of the songs here, "Teasing The Trains" and Too High To Drive", remind me a little
of the modern day Little Feat sound. But only a little, this band has a pretty
unique sound. These are also great dance tunes. "American Dream" is a nice cajun
song that offers a good sounding sax and accordian. Also featuring some great sax
playing is the slow jazzy "Pet De Kat", and the mega-bumpin' rock and roller
"Iko-A-Go-Go". My favorite tune here is the album closer "Ridin' On The Rims". This
is a great mid-tempo song that features some very catchy, rolling piano lines that's
hard to get out of my head. It's one of the best songs that I've heard this year.
I'm basically a blues rock lover, but this album has so much downhome crossover
appeal to it. There's not a weak song on here. The music on "Shine" seems to have a
way of staying in you subconscious long after you've listened to it. Iko Iko is a
one of a kind band, and "Shine" is a entertaining and worthwhile find.

NoThis is the 4th Iko-Iko release on Little Silver Records which, in typical
fashion, follows the previous release by 4 years. The first release was "Snowstorm
in the Jungle" in 1988, followed by "Riding on the Rims" in 1992 and "Protected by
Voodoo" in 1996. Bottom line is that 4 years between CD's is entirely too long to
wait for a group of this caliber.
On this CD, the band sticks to its formula of cleverly crafted originals
written/performed by Graham Wood Drout and tight rhythm by saxman Ron Dziublo and
the rest of the band.
All twelve songs are excellent. I would recommend that you purchase this as well as
the last release "Protected by Voodoo", put them in your player and turn the volumne
