HOWLIN' WOLF - Rockin’ The Blues: Live In Germany 1964

Howlin’ Wolf – Rockin’ The Blues: Live In Germany 1964 (2003)

This is a reissue of the November 6, 1964, Bremen concert that was previously available as Live in Europe 1964 on the Sundown label, with the same incorrect title references. What is first-rate is the sound, which is head-and-shoulders above most of the Howlin’ Wolf live recordings of this period, undoubtedly because the show was part of the American Folk-Blues tour, large chunks of which were recorded professionally, and also the performance, which comes from a time when Wolf was still in very robust health. It’s been said that if Muddy Waters had been born in Africa, he would have been a king; this show, which Chess Records could only wish they’d recorded, is a reminder that if Howlin’ Wolf had been born in Africa, he’d have been a witch doctor or shaman; he’s spellbinding in his performance, and the band backing him (a kind of star combo itself, with Willie Dixon and Sunnyland Slim playing alongside Hubert Sumlin) is tight, if a little restrained. And to top it off, it’s mid-priced.

HOWLIN' WOLF - The Chess 50'th Anniversary Collection

Howlin' Wolf - The Chess 50'th Anniversary Collection

Chester Burnett's ferocious growl was a staple of Chicago's electric-blues heyday. This 20-song compilation ranges from his 1951 debut "Moanin' at Midnight" with Willie Johnson on guitar to 1964's "Killing Floor" with Buddy Guy on guitar. His scratchy, sawed-off vocal approach and his energetic harmonica grace original classics such as "How Many More Years" and "Smokestack Lightnin'." By 1960, he became, along with Muddy Waters, the foremost interpreter of Willie Dixon's songs, lending his coarse voice to legendary Dixon cuts such as "Wang Dang Doodle," "Back Door Man," "Spoonful," "The Red Rooster," and "I Ain't Superstitious." Wolf's style was based on primal raw power, and he ranks among the genre's most distinctive performers.

HOWLIN' WOLF - The London Howlin' Wolf Sessions - Deluxe Edition (2002)

Wolf was 60 in 1970, and not in the best of health, but he came over to London to record with some of the British musicians who had picked up on his music and helped bring it to a wider audience over here. The sessions were not altogether happy ones to start with, as Eric Clapton struggled at first playing with his hero (plus Hubert Sumlin and Jeffrey CArp who had come over with Wolf), but Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts began to pull it together bringing their "tightest rythym section in R&B" to the party. Clapton began to settle in with his part and Ian Stewart emerged from the fringe of the Stone to add piano. Ringo Starr (billed as Richie) appears on one track, and other luminaries include Klaus Voorman and John Simon amongst others. Steve Winwood added keyboards overdubs later.

This deluxe edition contains newly remixed bonus tracks from LONDON REVISTED, and previously unreleased remixes from the original session tapes. Recorded at Olympic Sound Studios, London, England in 1970.
