GARY MOORE - ALL THE BEST

Acknowledged as one of the finest musicians that the British Isles has ever produced, and with a career that dated back to the 1960s, there were few musical genres that Gary Moore had not turned his adroit musical hand to. Gracing the line-ups of several notable rock bands, Thin Lizzy, Colosseum II and (The Original) Skid Row, in his time, he also established himself as a world-class guitarist, with few equals. Gary was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, on April 4th 1952. Like many others, he was turned on to rock and roll first through hearing Elvis Presley, and then via The Beatles. Seeing the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers in his hometown in the mid-60s opened up to him the rich world of The Blues. Hearing the art of the blues guitar performed by such lauded exponents as Peter Green fired Moore's nascent talent, and it wasn't long before he was being hailed as a teen musical prodigy. Indeed, it was Green himself who helped foster Moore's career, a debt that was repaid handsomely when Gary cut his warm and heartfelt tribute to his mentor, the 'Blues For Greeny' album, released in 1995....gary-moore.com

GARY MOORE - Live At Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland - July 6th 2010

Gary Moore - Live At Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland 6 July 2010
Rock and blues guitar great Gary Moore passed away on February 6, 2011. The 58-year-old Irish rocker gave his final recorded live performance in July of 2010 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Eagle Rock Entertainment has issued that performance as Live at Montreux 2010 on CD, DVD and Blu-ray. The CD contains 11 of the 13 songs performed, packing in 77 minutes of music. The mix keeps Moore’s searing leads prominent, making this a vital release for guitar rock fans.

After years of blues explorations, this performance marked a return to hard-charging rock for Moore. In fact, the former Thin Lizzy guitarist was working on a new rock album at the time of his death. Providing a hint of what might’ve been, Moore performed three brand new songs that night at Montreux – all of which are included here. “Days of Heroes” is a strident, stomping rocker with Moore belting a furious vocal. “Where Are You Now” leans into a slow, insistent beat. Moore throws himself into vocal, straining to remain on key at times. “Oh Wild One” boasts an instantly memorable riff, easily the poppiest of the three new compositions.

Gary MooreThis is not a prettied-up live album, since the mix keeps things rough and ready. Moore’s vocals are a little too naked at times, frequently flat and generally haggard. But in the end, the warts-and-all sound makes for a very honest-sounding document. His guitar prowess is never in doubt, with loud, sinewy solos cutting through the muscular ensemble playing. Longtime Moore collaborator Neil Carter handles keyboards and rhythm guitar. Former latter-era Jethro Tull bassist Jon Noyce provides the bottom. Current Primal Scream drummer Darrin Mooney rounds out the powerful rhythm section.

Though more of a cult favorite in the U.S., Moore scored decent-sized hits in the U.K., two of which bookend Live at Montreux 2010. “Over the Hills and Far Away,” a U.K. top 20 single (and minor U.S. hit on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart) storms out of the gate to open the album. Moore’s best known hit “Parisienne Walkways,” co-written and originally sung by Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott, wraps things up. Clocking in at an epic 11 minutes, it’s the perfect closer to Moore’s final moment in the spotlight

GARY MOORE - Essential Montreux [5 CD BoxSet]

Gary Moore - Essential Montreux [5 CD BoxSet]

RIP Gary
1952-2011

This five-disc box collects as many complete concerts by Irish blues-rock guitarist Gary Moore, recorded in 1990, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Some might call this too much material, especially given the number of songs that recur, but there is in fact substantial variation from disc to disc. The obvious outlier is the 1990 disc, on which Moore is joined for four superlative songs by legendary Texas guitarist Albert Collins. But the 1997 concert finds Moore moving from straight Chicago-style blues to an alternative metal roar, the guitar cranked up ferociously loud and backed by a mix of live instruments, occasionally chintzy synths, and programmed beats. By 1999, he's returned to the blues, albeit a hard-rocking version that's still closer in spirit to Blueshammer than Buddy Guy. The 2001 set is a mixed bag, running the gamut from a restrained take on "Stormy Monday" to an almost punk rock sprint through Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" and the amp-frying closing instrumental "The Prophet." At each concert, he's backed by a sympathetic and skilled band (including horns in 1990 and 1995), which only draws attention to one of this set's biggest flaws -- the total lack of information. Concert dates are provided, but no personnel listings or songwriting credits. It's a shame that the backing musicians are so ill-served, but otherwise, any serious Moore fan would do well to pick this set up and spend an afternoon or two wallowing in six hours of screaming blues-rock guitar.

GARY MOORE - WE WANT MOORE! - 1984

Gary Moore's classic live album "We Want Moore!" is about as good as it gets. Drawing mainly from the Irish guitarist's previous two studio albums, every cut gets a shot in the arm from Moore's extended soloing, most notably the Yardbird's "Shapes of Things" at almost nine minutes. Recorded in places as distant as Tokyo, Glasgow and Detroit, the performances also benefit from the impressive vocal tag team between Moore and rhythm guitarist Neil Carter.
