DRIVE -BY TRUCKERS - Black Ice Verite

Drive-By Truckers – Black Ice Verite (2014)

“On February 12th, 2014, we planned an intimate private ‘dress rehearsal’ show to premiere the songs from our brand new album “English Oceans” in front of a small live audience of friends. The plan was to film and record the performance for use in promoting the album. It turned out to be the day of an ice storm that essentially shut down the Southeast for a couple of days and the roads were unpassable from the combination of black ice and the South’s lack of snow plows and ice related services. We played the album in its entirety and had a pretty swell time. This DVD contains the performance and is a pretty nifty document of that moment in time for our band.

We hope that you enjoy it.”

– Patterson Hood

DRIVE -BY TRUCKERS - English Oceans

Drive-By Truckers – English Oceans (2014)

Drive-By TruckersOn March 4th, Drive-By Truckers return with their brand new album, English Oceans. The follow-up to 2011's Go-Go Boots was recorded with longtime producer David Barbe at Chase Park Studios in Athens, Georgia. According to the band, the 13-track effort is a return to form, reminiscent of their 1999 live album, Alabama Ass Whuppin’.
“I had forgotten what a punk-rock outfit that shit was,” co-frontman Mike Cooley told Rolling Stone. “The new record has kind of gone back to that simple sound. It sounds like a smaller band again.”
English Oceans also marks the first Truckers album where both Cooley and co-singer Patterson Hood shared the songwriting duties evenly. Together, they covered a range of topics, including “scathing take-downs of right-wing demagogues (“Made Up English Oceans,” “The Part of Him”), tender tales of mental breakdown (“When Walter Went Crazy”) and bittersweet celebrations of lost friends and life on the road (“Grand Canyon”).”

*Taper Notes*
After to listening to Team Dirty South's stream of the Friday show and finding out afterward that more Saturday tickets had been released, willSFC and I decided to make a cheap up to Nashville from the Shoalsfor night two. Glad we did. It was as strong a show as Friday. Thanks to Matt and Cole of the DBT crew for assisting the audio/video tapers.

Bobby Keys and The Sufferin' Bastards opened the show and were fantastic. The set was a very tiny sample of some of the great cuts Bobby has played on over the years.

I like the Truckers with David Barbe. The band sounds heavier on tracks like "Buttholeville," "Lookout Mountain" and "Play it All Night Long."  Like Friday, the band brought out some gems like "Pin Hits the Shell," "Daddy Learned to Fly" and "Goode's Field Road."

PATTERSON HOOD - KILLERS AND STARS

Drive-By Truckers' leader, Patterson Hood, wrote and recorded the 12 songs on Killers and Stars in 2001 during what was, by his own admission, a dark and difficult time in his life, though you probably wouldn't have needed to know that to make an educated guess that this was not the work of a happy man. A lo-fi acoustic collection of tunes recorded in his dining room on a four-track, Killers and Stars takes the troubling undercurrents of DBT's songs like "The Deeper In," "Sink Hole," and "Angels and Fuselage" and drags them to the surface, and while one could imagine a souped-up version of "Miss Me Gone" finding its way onto a Drive-By Truckers album, nearly everything else exists in a universe somehow separate from Hood's prior work. But while this sounds less like a full-blown solo album than a set of demos that developed a life of its own (a bit like Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska), Hood's instincts were right for giving these songs a home of their own, because they genuinely deserve one. "Rising Son" and "Old Timer's Disease" are sad but accurate examinations of family from both ends of the generational divide, "Phil's Transplant" is a striking character sketch about a woman who no longer recognizes her husband after he's received a new heart, and "Frances Farmer" and "Cat Power" are meditations on two of Hood's romantic obsessions. A few of these tunes are experiments that don't fully succeed, but like nearly everything else here, the short blasts of rage on "Fire" and "Belinda Carlisle Diet" get over thanks to Hood's stark, emotionally naked performances. Patterson Hood previously distributed a self-released version of Killers and Stars as a "work in progress," and his decision not to "complete" it sounds like the right thing to do -- like Nebraska, Killers and Stars is an album whose plain surfaces and rough edges only add to the impact of the final work. ~ Mark Deming

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - The Fine Print (2009)

The Fine Print (A Collection Of Oddities and Rarities 2003-2008) features songs written by band members past and present, including Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell. 7 of the twelve songs come from The Dirty South era... a highly creative time for DBT. Hood explains "That was an especially fertile period for the band, as we more or less wrote that album and the one before it, Decoration Day, as well as my first solo album all in a three year period as we were recording and touring behind Southern Rock Opera." The record also contains four covers including "Rebels" by Tom Petty, which the band recorded originally for the TV show "King Of The Hill" and "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan which provided Shonna Tucker with her first ever lead vocal performance on a DBT recording.

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - Alabama Ass Whuppin' (1999)

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS - Alabama Ass Whuppin' (1999)

 128
RARE

A live recording featuring a great collection of punk-based country rock. This is some stomping, driving music, with an urgency not heard in most alt-country. Patterson Hood's raspy vox perfectly fit the music, and the warm guitar sound dominates. Since this is a live album, the songs incorporate some extended bluesy jams. The performance is staggering enough to elicit the drunken shouts for "More!" at the end of the album. The punk roots of the band are evident, most explicitly in the Jim Carroll cover on track 11. "Steve McQueen" is a rousing tribute to a childhood hero, which segues into "Gimme Three Steps" and back again. "The Avon Lady" is an improvised tale of a neighbor who's a tad overzealous in the pushing of make-up products. "Margo & Harold," a song about how people grow weirder with each passing year, also does the service of explaining the title. The most powerful track on the disc is "The Living Bubba," a plaintive cry from a musician dying of AIDS, needing just a little more time to live as he's "got another show." The drunken pyschobilly is what gives the compositions their energy and momentum, but it is songs like this one which gives the album its power.
