CAN - THE LOST TAPES
Can – The Lost Tapes (2012)
3 CDs of rehearsal tapes, live recordings, studio jams and forgotten soundtracks might, in the case of most bands, seem like an overwhelming, most likely futile, indulgence. But Can – whose influence, like The Velvet Underground’s, grows with each year – are different. The German band’s entire methodology, beginning with their 1969 debut, Monster Movie, was to leave the studio tape running, editing down whatever emerged from their lengthy improvisations to create some of the most kosmische music of what became known as krautrock. The Lost Tapes, drawn from over 50 hours of recordings covering their entire career, collates the best of what was left behind.
At their best, Can could be transcendental, Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Jaki Liebezeit (drums),…S
…Michael Karoli (guitars) and Holger Czukay (bass) pooling their musical talents on furiously rhythmic freakouts, atmospheric soundscapes and playfully extravagant sonic experiments. With Malcom Mooney on vocals, replaced later by Damo Suzuki, they also had vocalists wholly in synch with their aesthetic: sometimes calm, sometimes frankly berserk. Given their intuitive playing and commitment to experimentation, it’s little wonder Can continue to inspire so many.
For fans of Mooney, The Lost Tapes are an especially welcome treasure trove, offering seven previously unheard tracks, including the deranged Deadly Doris and the 10-minute Waiting for the Streetcar, a classic example of Can’s winning ability to stretch one idea beyond breaking point and still emerge inspired. But there’s more to this collection than just material for completists: though some may struggle to find any purpose in The Agreement’s apparent recording of a toilet, and may wonder if monkeys were let loose in the studio for Blind Mirror Surf, the 16-plus minutes of Graublau – a 1969 soundtrack – are dizzily energetic and excitingly innovative, as good as anything they recorded.
Bubble Rap is another gem, boasting a lazy, low-slung groove before building to a fierce psychedelic climax, and even Barnacles, recorded late in their career, has a pleasant funk within. With staggering live versions of Spoon and Mushroom to boot, The Lost Tapes turns out to be even rarer than its contents: a collection almost as vital as Can’s official album output.

This is a great recording of Can from '73 and I am curious to know if it might be from a French radio broadcast as opposed to a straight mixing desk recording. There is a slight tape hiss to it and a few minor audio defects i.e. slight muffling here and there, which to my ears sound the kind of generation artefacts you might expect from analogue copying. It is however a very enjoyable listen, check out the sample. This concert may have appeared on Dime during a flood of Can recordings about two years ago but this is from my source procured about from a dealer circa 2003/4.
Seasonal greetings for Winter Solstice 2010!

Slightly under 30 minutes of what is supposed to be Can's first-ever jam, "spontaneously composed by Can at Scholss Nörvenich, West Germany, June 1968". The core lineup of Karoli / Czukay / Schmidt / Liebezeit are joined by David Johnson (flute, tapes) and Manni Löhe (vocals, percussion, flute) - this being even before Malcolm Mooney joined the group, which he would do later that year. This album is, in several ways, more extreme sounding than Can would ever later be, and the band manages to cover a large musical territory in the process. At the onset (and at points throughout the album), the influence totem Karlheinz Stockhausen is felt, at times if Stockhausen was attempting to conduct an "orchestra" of Amon Düül or Cro Magnon. Of course, Can were not exactly unskilled hippies, but it is intriguing to hear them get this loose. Even at the most out-there moments of the album, strangely familiar, almost recognizable bass pulses, guitar lines, and percussion patterns are heard, rendering the participants unmistakable.
Manni Löhe obviously sounds little like Malcolm Mooney (or Damo Suzuki), and had his own style that fit as well as those two; he either wails, sounding electronic, or joins the rhythm section with rhythmic clicks and grunts, in a manner somewhat reminiscent of his successor's style. But improv parts are followed by something different... things change quite a bit of the 30 minutes, as rhythms may shift from sly and funky to ballistically pounding before you notice. Other parts are Can at their most VU-influenced, and downright heaviest. The rhythm section fills up both the temporal and harmonic space like it never would later, as they later advanced in subtlety. But here, Holger can be heard thumping away on all the beats as the entire band rocks out. Maybe a musique concrete tape next?
After another dissociate introduction, side 2 quickly gets into the most overtly Can-like groove of the album, with the flute joining Leibezeit's backbeat to add a jazzy edge. Here, too, Löhe's vocals are Mooney-esquely percussive, ushering further mutations to the sound that add up to make this an excellent "spontaneous composition". The sense of evolution over the course of the album, and foreshadowing what was to come are both reason enough to listen. Originally released in France on cassette only in 1984, this is clearly an item of major interest to the Can fan or krautrock connoisseur.

CAN - TAGO MAGO [40th Anniversary Edition]
Can – Tago Mago [40th Anniversary Edition] (2011)
Always at least three steps ahead of contemporary popular music, Can were the leading avant-garde rock group of the ’70s. From their very beginning, their music didn’t conform to any commonly held notions about rock & roll — not even those of the countercultures. Inspired more by 20th century classical music than Chuck Berry, their closest contemporaries were Frank Zappa or possibly the Velvet Underground. Yet their music was more serious and inaccessible than either of those artists. Instead of recording tight pop songs or satire, Can experimented with noise, synthesizers, nontraditional music, cut-and-paste techniques, and, most importantly, electronic music; each album marked a significant step forward from the previous album, investigating new territories…
…that other rock bands weren’t interested in exploring.
With 1971's two-record set Tago Mago, Can hit their visionary stride, shedding the constraints of pop forms and structures to explore long improvisations, angular rhythms, and experimental textures. 40th anniversary edition of this genre-defying album comes packaged in the original UK artwork for the first time since 1971, and includes a bonus CD featuring 50 minutes of unreleased live material from 1972, remastered in 2011.
