BOB SEGER – Ride Out [Target Deluxe Edition]
Bob Seger – Ride Out [Target Deluxe Edition] (2014)
Arriving a mere eight years after the decade-in-the-making Face the Promise, Ride Out nearly feels rushed by Bob Seger‘s latter-day standards.
At 34 minutes, it’s brief and nearly half of its ten songs were composed by songwriters other than Seger, two characteristics that would suggest something of a patchwork job if it weren’t for the fact that in the days before the Silver Bullet Band, Bob used to regularly split his brief albums between originals and covers. In its construction, Ride Out mirrors early albums like Back in 72, but it comes from the days after the Silver Bullet Band, the days when Seger surrounded himself with highly paid professional musicians who didn’t leave a note out of place. Oddly, even with all the pros aboard again, Ride Out feels like the homespun work of an old millionaire rocker, a record that prefers to amiably ramble instead of driving full-speed ahead. Often, Seger sticks strictly to his wheelhouse — a charging rendition of John Hiatt’s “Detroit Made” is textbook Seger, from its fist-pumping chorus to its rapturous odes to bucket seats — but he’s just as likely to veer into gutbucket blues (the hard-hitting “Hey Gypsy,” his best original here) or country story-telling (Steve Earle’s “The Devil’s Right Hand” and Kasey Chambers’ “Adam and Eve,” the two best covers here). Unfortunately, this light restlessness is somewhat undone by Seger’s surprisingly chintzy self-production, which alternates between anonymous gloss and constrictive sequenced synthesizers, the latter reaching a tacky peak on the stilted title track where a four-on-the-floor drum loop vies for attention with canned electronic horns. Other stumbles can be found, such as the well-intentioned and mercilessly literal pro-environmental anthem “It’s Your World” (“Let’s talk about mining in Wisconsin/Let’s talk about breathing in Beijing”), and while there’s some charm in the fact that Seger is loose enough to keep his ends untied, Ride Out is hobbled by that exacting production: conceptually, it’s something of a ragged mess and it’d benefit from sounding like one.

ABOUT
Following years of modest regional success, the 1976 album Live Bullet, recorded live at Detroit's Cobo Hall, would catapult Bob Seger's career. It would also begin an astounding 5-year stretch where Seger and his Silver Bullet Band would dominate American radio and everything Seger touched seemingly turned to gold. The three studio albums to follow during this golden era, Night Moves, Stranger In Town and the number one Grammy Award wining Against The Wind, would each deliver numerous hits and many permanent staples of classic rock radio.
On Seger 's 1980 tour, he successfully made lightning strike twice by recording a sequel to Live Bullet. The result was Nine Tonight, originally released as a 2 LP set. This outstanding live album would truly capture Seger's special brand of heartland rock and the power and excitement of the Silver Bullet Band at its peak. Many consider this album the absolute best encapsulation of Seger's golden era (and that is not overlooking his Greatest Hits).
Decades later, journey back to the penultimate concert from the 1980 tour, when Seger and The Silver Bullet Band returned to their home stomping grounds at Detroit's Cobo Hall, presented here for the first time ever in it's unedited entirety! This recording is a terrific overview of Seger's peak era, from raunchy rockers to heartfelt ballads and everything in between, all performed with fire and passion. It all culminates in a second encore of "Rock And Roll Never Forgets" that smokes the studio recording before launching into an extended tribute to Chuck Berry and classic rock & roll, where the raw energy of this band and the chemistry between Seger and his audience is undeniable.

BOB SEGER - Live Boston 1977
Bob Seger – Live Boston 1977 (2013)
The legendary rocker, Bob Seger recorded at, arguably, his peak in 1977, after the release of commercial breakthrough album Night Moves.
Recorded the year after Live Bullet, Seger’s quintessential live album, double album Live: Boston 1977 finds the Michigan native delivering a live set while he and his Silver Bullet Band were at the height of their power.
Featuring hits like “Katmandu,” “Travelin’ Man,” “Turn the Page”, and the old-school Bob Seger System-era rocker “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man,” the concert covers a lot of ground in terms of iconic songs. For anyone new to Seger, nothing beats the raging hometown heroics of Live Bullet, but veterans will certainly be able to find something to appreciate in this performance.

BOB SEGER - ULTIMATE HITS
Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets [2CD] (2011)
For casual fans who don’t already own both volumes of Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band’s Greatest Hits, this week sees the release of a worthwhile alternative in the two-disc retrospective, Ultimate Hits: Rock and Roll Never Forgets (Capitol Records).
All the mainstays are present — “Night Moves,” “Still the Same,” “Against The Wind,” “Old Time Rock and Roll,” etc. — as well as two previously unreleased covers: a middle-of-the-road ride on Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train” and a far more fun romp through the Little Richard classic “Hey, Hey, Hey, Hey (Going Back to Birmingham).”
Unlike the Greatest Hits sets, this one includes classics like the original mono version of “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” by the Bob Seger System…
…and the Live Bullet double shot of “Traveling Man” and “Beautiful Loser,” which once and for all should’ve been mixed into one track as God and rock radio always intended.
What is perhaps most striking about this set, though — and this speaks more to Seger’s indelible impact on American music than it does anything else — is that at 26 tracks it still doesn’t cover all the hits. Though while a case could be made against one or two dubious inclusions — How did his rendition of “Little Drummer Boy” make the cut here, for instance, but not “Sunspot Baby?” — overall this retrospective is solid, like a rock.
