How I Personalized My Own T-Shirt
The samples I designed are in and they are fabulous!! I created these specifically for myself and my family (meaning you won't find a variation of my wedding invitation for sale in the shop) but the idea is awesome! If you're interested, let me know! Anyway, the point is... Personalized T-shirts are now available and they are awesome! Great printing on a great quality tee.

Our t-shirts are NAFTA Friendly (North American Free Trade agreement) which means they were made from US grown cotton, knitted & dyed in the USA and then cut & sewn in Mexico. Each and every personalized t-shirt ordered will be custom designed by me and printed with a partner in California. My goal is for them to be 100% made is USA within the next year.

Plane tickets booked! Surtex here I come!

I made a huge investment in myself and my business with the full support of my family to keep things running smoothly while I take off on this adventure. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world!

drum roll please.....

I am going to Surtex! I booked my plan ticket from Cleveland to New York City last night. I was a ball of nerves as I was going through the Travelocity website; departure, return flight, pick your seat, confirmation and DONE! Trip booked and no turning back. Huge sigh of relief. Huge sense of overwhelm.

Surtex is the only show in North America solely devoted to selling and licensing original art and design for all types of products. Surtex draws hundreds of designers from around the world, where they are given the opportunity to market their collections to manufacturers of products for home, contract, stationery, giftware, toys, publishing, and more.

I won't be exhibiting this year but I thought it would be a really good investment to go, walk the show floor, take notes, sit in on workshops and absorb the goodness.

I'm not sure I'm ready to add another thing to my plate. Back home, while I'm gone, there's the Etsy shop to keep up on - which is the bread & butter of our family - and my daughter's school schedule and extra activities to be maintained. I'm signed up for Module 3 of the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design which will be in full swing and shortly after Surtex I'll start Lilla Rogers class, Make Art that Sells.

I've put a lot of money and time into this new adventure because I'm a HUGE believer in the philosophy:

If you leap, the net will appear.

I've done a lot of leaping over the last few years and it's come back to me in abundance. So, what's a girl gonna do?

Leap again!

Art shows with a capital A

It's summer and to a couple of self-employed artists that means art shows with a capital "A". This is serious stuff. It was the great debate in my head and my heart but I decided that I won't be doing art shows this year. My Etsy shop has me busy full time and it has Gavin busy about 25-30 hours a week. I just couldn't see having the time in our summer for both of us to put together separate bodies of work for multiple shows this season. Gavin shows 3-4 times while I had 8-10 shows during the summer. So gracefully I backed out from the scene this year. I really feel it's important to support Gavin and his work to the same degree he supports Olivia and I throughout all our creative ventures as well.

For those that follow the goings around here, Gavin is one badass designer-blacksmith and I'm just so proud. We even met at an art show back in 2010. Meant to be? YES!! Anyway, his work is almost exclusively hand forged wrought iron. As a product of the Rust Belt and of greater Cleveland, few creative media could be more appropriate than iron. Having earned a degree in Studio Arts and Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace in 2004 and completed world-renown certificate programs at the Lincoln Electric CHQ Weld School, his formal education in both Fine Art & Design and metalworking is also quintessentially Cleveland.

The products made in his studio and shop, The Designer Wrought Iron Company, are almost exclusively custom, privately commissioned wrought ironworks and range in scope from railing systems to drawer pulls and candlesticks.

Funny, I didn't realize that you can't see his face in either of these install images!!

His work has been featured in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Sun Times, and on the PBS television series “Applause”.

In case this video isn't working (blogger is playing tricks on me!) here's the link:
http://designerwroughtiron.com/movie/Gavin.swf

Gavin's next art show will be the Cain Park Arts Festival, July 13-15th in Cleveland Heights, Ohio. You can follow them here on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CainParkArtsFestival

We are feverishly preparing for that as it's his most prominent show of the year with 150+ artists from all over the nation travelling to exhibit their work. And with Near & Dear Designs on the rise, as you can imagine, this keeps us quite busy!!

They grow up so fast - Tales from Motherhood

That's right folks, that time of year has come and Olivia has graduated from elementary school!  My baby is no longer like a baby anymore! It was a bitter sweet day.  I spent the morning look through pictures and came across these: Her First Day of Kindergarten.

Ah!  She's just too adorable!  And boy was she full of it!!  I thought about how much she's grown and changed. How much she's learned and accomplished.  How much more "her" she's become.

Such a beautiful young, spirited lady.  By the way, did I mention she was awarded the Presidential Award of Academic Excellence?  YEAH BABY!!!

It's a good day!

It's a good day in the world of JukeboxArt!  Lots of exciting activities planned for 2011.  Within minutes, literally minutes, of each other I received two emails.

The first says:
The Lakewood Arts Festival Board of Trustees thanks you for submitting an entry application.  You have been ACCEPTED into the August 6, 2011 show, and we look forward to a wonderful festival with great exposure and sales for our artists. We are pleased that you will be part of our 34th year anniversary.

That's right!  Lakewood I'm coming back!  :)  Last year I met so many fabulous people who not only supported and purchased from me at the show but almost 8 months later the referrals are STILL coming in!  Wedding gifts, anniversary gifts, house warming etc.  I love all the creative ways you all choose to gift my work!

crafty-goodness

Speaking of Lakewood, my good friends Matt and Joanna over at Crafty Goodness just told me today that I had a few pieces sell out of their shop this month.  Crafty Goodness is new to the community with many artists and crafters featured as well as a plethora of classes in their line-up for all those who want to try their hand at something new!  Crafty Goodness is good stuff.

And lastly, I've been working on flushing out the details but coming up this month in April I'll also be the featured artist over at the new lululemon athletica Cleveland store opening later this month.  lululemon is a yoga-inspired athletic apparel company with it's heart at the community.  Each lululemon location goes above and beyond the norm to support and inspire the members of their community grow and flourish and they've invited me to participate in their grand opening with my music inspired artwork. :)  It's a win win!  Maybe I'll get some good yoga gear out of the deal!

Lion or Lioness?

March is certainly coming in like a lion.  A fast furious crazy busy lioness that is!  Never under estimate the power of a woman.  I've got so many projects, shows and spots happening this month that I've little time to share them all.  So, pardon me for the quick updates but time is of the essence right now.  Which is wonderful!

First up is my Etsy Stalker Shadowbox Gallery that is will run the entire month of March.  Thanks to the lovely Beatrice and Violet I have a beautiful gallery on their website that I hope brings me and my work many new friends!

And to my surprise, I got home this evening to find out that Etsy Lounge has given me a spot in their permanent treasury titled: Synesthesia & Musical Inspiration on Etsy

If you hear a sound and concomittently sense a color, you have a rare condition known as synesthesia. An example might be the musical note middle C provoking you to envision the color red. Such perceptions are involuntary physical responses to auditory stimuli versus examples of conscious response to sensory input.

and so many more!

Cirque Imaginaire is a traveling art gallery and bazaar that showcases the art work of several local artists across the Cleveland area.  Cirque Imaginaire is always changing its location and rotation of artists.  It's the imaginary gallery that's sure to dazzle and entertain all who witness the show!

More to come, I'll be hanging at Artefino Art Gallery Cafe this week, I've got several custom orders rolling in (which means new designs added to the JukeboxART series soon!), I've got my feelers out for a book publishing and a gallery show in April and.... and..... well, I don't want to jinx myself....  when details are settled you can be sure I'll share.
Happy fast furious crazy busy March everyone!

Have you Googled yourself lately?

I admit.  I vanity search. *blushing*  But great things come of such activities.  Like today, I found these two mentions of JukeboxART on other blogs and thought I'd share!

Thanks for the plug girls! (Better late than never right?)

TIP: While Vanity surfing is fun it is also essential for protecting yourself from slander, idea or image theft on the internet.  Have you Googled yourself lately?

The Crafty and Creative

If you happen to be out and about and on the east side this coming friday (eh-hem, Black Friday) do yourself a favor and stop by the shops on Larchmere for their annual Holiday Stroll. Dozens of independent shops, services and award-winning restaurants will open their doors and welcome in the season.

Stop in Vine and Bean for a warm cuppa and a tasty treat and take a look at my JukeboxART designs.  They have invaded the cafe and are priced to sell!

While you're at it, right across the street from Vine and Bean is the Bazaar Bizarre (East) craft show. I won't be displaying this time but a lot of great local crafty and creatives are!

Support your local merchants and vendors this season and buy handmade!

I'm ashamed.

So very ashamed. I'm a bad blogger. But I promise to try and get better! It's been three months and so much has happened. The main highlights are WOW! Wade Oval Wednesdays were a smashing hit this summer and the Salty not Sweet craft show was a bust. :) Sorry, but it was. We were fighting a lack of organization and promotion, a holiday weekend and an unregionably warm sunny day for northeast Ohio. BUT, the people who did come to shop and show support did just that! Thank you (you know who you are).....

More to come this fall as I've got another Oddmall show, www.oddmall.info, this November. Get your holiday shopping on!

the livin' is easy

Seems the summer season is shaping up quite well. I don't know what it is about warm weather but already my calendar is full! Between weekend camping trips, Cedar Point with my boyfriend and our collective kids, street fairs, markets, parades and festivals around the city, a friend of two coming to visit, going to visit a friend of two and having a booth lined up for JukeboxArt SEVERAL times this summer, I can't help but smile and think what a difference a year makes. For that, I am grateful.

Okay, here's the scoop. JukeboxArt now has it's own URL, www.jukebox-art.com. The url will direct you to the JukeboxArt section of my personal site bjwcreative.com. I have overhauled the entire site, combed through the info, updated with new content and (my favorite) created a brand new fresh design. Please take a look!

Scoop 2: JukeboxArt will be displayed at Wade Oval Wednesdays (aka WOW!) six times throughout the summer. I'm excited about all nights as the music lineup for the summer has been very well selected but I'm doing the most prep for June 17th, Beatles Tribute night. I've been listening to the Beatles LOVE album consistantly (in my car, at my desk, in my head) and as a result I will be releasing two new Beatles inspired designs that night with a discount on all Beatles inspired designs! WOW! nights are free to the public with a lot of good music, good food and of course good vendors!

This coming August I will be featured as Cleveland Artist of the month on Tricia's Dish (http://triciachaves.blogspot.com). For Tricia's weekly give-away program sometime that month I will be donating a gift certificate good for a 5x7 print, matted and framed print of any piece currently in the JukeboxArt gallery (valued at $50). When I have an exact week the package will be up for grabs I'll be sure to post it. Thanks Tricia for your support!

Also, on the agenda for the fall/holiday season is an indie show called "Salty not Sweet" (http://www.saltynotsweet.com) in Sepetember and Oddmall Chrishanukwanzmadan (aka: the holiday extravagazan) in November. I have LOTS of work to do!

On a more personal note (most times pleasure is business; I got lucky that way) I have recently been on the prowl with my camera and I've taken some great shots to keep in the archives to use for imagery in JukeboxArt - images from a cemetary, the zoo and a brick wall. Yes, a brick wall. :) I'm so excited to use these pictures. I'm just sitting back and waiting for the inspiration.

Tomorrow is June so happy summer everyone! Make it count.

emergence

It's been awhile since I've posted here and even more so it's been awhile since I've taken the time to write it all down! That's all very good though. It means I'm busy. Busy is all I seem to know how to be. Sometimes I feel like the cover of the Office Space movie all covered in Post-it® Notes.... so many thing on my mind, so many ideas, so many lists of things to do.... I might gripe here and there but the reality is I love it. So many amazing things have happened to me lately and everyday I realize how grateful I am to be granted with talent, family, friends, passion and the ability to be aware that these are indeed precious things.

Now that the mushy stuff is out of the way :) I want to speak about my art and the direction it's taken. I've
never really given anything I've created a real chance to grow. My level of instant gratification is as true as the grass grows green. It appears I get bored easily but the truth is I have so many ideas, so many different styles and so many different ways about me and my creativity that I can't sit on something too long because the next big thing will flit in and out of my mind before I know it. Anyway, jukeboxART has been my fix.

Up until recently I've always displayed my work in galleries or coffeehouses - which is also perfect - however whenever anything would sell, I would get a phone call to come pick up my check. That's great but one thing has always been missing. The face to face personal interaction. The conversation. The expression. This past weekend I had my first booth at an "Arts and Crafts Extravaganza" (gotta start somewhere) and let me tell you it was a lot of work! (which I'm certainly no stranger to) BUT the best part is how well the series was received. People LOVED my art, they loved the colors and the graphic-ness of my style, they loved the lyrical references and they loved the memories and associations I brought back to them. I live for that look - the one when they realized what my art was about - the one when they found a song that holds a cherished memory - the one that enables a slight hum or toe tapping when flipping through prints, or the one that gives a slight smile as a tear is dabbed from the corner of an eye. You know, that look.

Anyway, everything went really well. I made some friends, sold some art, acquired a few fans, narrowed down my marketplace a little more than before and overall had a really good time.

Thank you everyone for your support!

Much Love.
