Edjikashun
Apropos of nothing. I just got socked with Princess Nomad's Spring college invoice. I just paid over more money for that one semester than it cost me to go to school for five years (not including beer and dope of course). Holy crap- the price of University is absolutely absurd. AND... that's factoring in that the kid got about $25,000 in grants and aid. Luckily, the Princess is a great student (and most of the $$$$ she got in grants was due to her academics).
I have no idea how parents who haven't been able to save and borrow can do this.
I just hope she remembers my largess when she's looking at my life support and deciding whether to pull the plug or not.
In other news... there's this band called THE CLASH that was around last century You should look into them. They were a nifty little combo.

Fridays
The show "Fridays" was a shameless rip-off perpetuated by ABC in the early 80's to capture the audience demo of NBC's "Saturday Nite Live". It might be best known for being the launching pad of "Seinfeld's" Larry David and Michael Richards. Also notable was a totally surreal stint by Andy Kaufman where Kaufman "breaks character" and a fistfight took place (later revealed to be a ruse).
However, I remember it as being a great source of live performances from some of my favorite bands.
The Clash, The Jam and The Plasmatics all had notable gigs on the show. The Plasmatics show (in the heyday of their hyped nihilistic glory, was especially entertaining). I still get chills watching The Clash.
List of bands that performed on Fridays:
- The Four Tops
- AC/DC in their debut American TV performance with Brian Johnson as singer
- The Beach Boys
- Pat Benatar
- Gary U.S. Bonds
- The Boomtown Rats
- Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band, the cast members danced to Stars Fell on Alabama
- The Busboys
- The Cars
- Chubby Checker
- The Clash in their debut American TV performance
- The Tubes
- Devo
- Dire Straits
- Graham Parker and the Rumour
- Heart - backed by the Tower of Power horn section
- Huey Lewis and the News
- Ian Hunter with Ellen Foley and Mick Ronson
- The Jam
- Jefferson Starship
- Jim Carroll
- Journey
- Kenny Loggins Band - appeared on the first episode
- Kim Carnes
- King Crimson
- Kiss (their performance appears on the second disc of their Kissology Volume Two: 1978-1991 DVD box set)
- Randy Meisner
- Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
- The Plasmatics
- The Pretenders
- Quarterflash
- Rockpile
- Scandal
- Sir Douglas Quintet - appeared on the show that featured Andy Kaufman
- Split Enz
- The Stray Cats in their debut American TV performance. At the time of their appearance they had yet to be signed by a record company. There was a crawl at the bottom of the screen inviting offers from record companies.
- Franke and the Knockouts
- The Blasters

This Is a Public Service Announcement...WITH GUITAR!!!!
This is a public service announcement
With guitar!
Know your rights
All three of them!
Number one!
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a CRIME!
Unless it was done
by a policeman
or an aristocrat
Ohh, know your rights!
And Number two
You have the right to food money
Providing of course
You don't mind a little
Investigation,
humiliation,
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation!
Know your rights
These are your rights
Number three
You have the right to free Speech
As long as
You're not dumb enough to actually try it
Know your rights
These are your rights
Know your rights
These are your rights
All three of 'em
Hah!
And it has been suggested in some quarters ... That this is not enough!
Well...
Get off the streets
Run!
Get off the streets
Run!

I Am An Industry Pillar (or something)
I was at a big time industry dinner awards event at a real fancy NYC venue last night. ... 350 of the big boys in my chosen vocation... real big boys...owners of billion dollar companies, execs , pillars of the industry. Fancy finger foods, open bar, expensive suits.
And me.
My suit costs less than most of these fuckers hankies.
En Why See Police commisioner Ray Kelly was the honoree. He spoke about being vigilant in the post 9/11 era. Whoever wrote his speech did a fine job. Then he left for a date with Obama...who's in town for the United Nations clusterfuck/circlejerk.
So in my old poor age I find myself at an event wearing a cheap black suit paying homage to the chief of nyc cops (and I want to state that he does a motherfucking great job- and has saved our sorry liberal asses many many times over the last ten years), making small talk with a bunch of wealthy upper class people that wouldn't be able to name a Black Flag tune if they had a gun pointed at them. Don't get me wrong...everyone was very nice and pleasent.
People usually are when they are looking down at you.
If someone woulda told me 20 years ago that I would be on the legal side of the law, making small talk at an event honoring "THE MAN", I woulda either hung myself or told the guy he was crazy. But there I was, holding a Ketel One in one hand and a plate of fancy finger food in the other.
At least the booze was free.
All reminding me of a day a few years back in which I was the honoree of an award. I had to give a speech, and I was really nervous. Mrs. Nomad advised me to eat a Xanax, which would calm me down. So of course I ate two of them. They kicked in about a half hour before my speech. I remember nothing of the events that transpired, with the exception of a bright red L.E.D. light that was blinking on the podium.
I was not invited back the next year.

No Future
takes the approach of a “tribute” to the Big 3 of UK old school punk: The Clash, The Damned & Sex Pistols. On one hand you have the slavishly devotional, such as Sex Pistols Experience, with their riff cloning ersions of “Pretty Vacant” and “Anarchy In The UK”. The Pistols have turned into self parody, so why bother as a tribute to the originals?

Aitch Bee Cee
You are your own demon. So sayeth my pal "C" about yerz truly. And she should know. Well, "C" is a true friend and the reality checks and back watching we have done for each other over most of this century have been both mutually beneficial and destructive.
And... since this is my blog, I wanna wish her a happy freaking birthday. As befits her coolness, her party was at some whacked out Bulgarian Bar that's owned or something by one of the guys from Gogol Bordello. It was a nite of crazy music WITH ALOT OF DANCING and an ice/vodka bar in which we had 2 minutes to drink all the vodka we could suck down. Since old Nazz is one quarter Gypsy, I fit right in.
So anyway, in honor of "C" here is some toonage that I know she'll dig. Or something.
The Clash - Tommy Gun (Live 1979 London Lyceum)
Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash - Redemption Song
Hot Water Music - Clampdown
The Strummers - Complete Control (Japanese band covering The Clash)
The Clash- YMCA (Live singalong on WBCN)

Punk Rock Your My Big Crybaby
Got this one from my brudder The Warden's site. You should check it out.
I didn't know of this Allen Ginsberg poem , and I am pretty good on most of the big names from The Beat Generation. Punk Rock You Big Crybaby is pretty cool. I had the pleasure of seeing Ginsberg read back in the early 80's (and had a really cool autographed sign from the event that has since disappeared from the Nomad Archives).
Ginsberg certainly had his punk creds. The dude was punk before rock n roll even shot out of Chuck Berry's loins. College irritant, Jail time, constant irritant to more than one President, recording with The Clash.
If you click HERE, you will be sent to a site that has The Life & Times Of Allen Ginsberg.

C-O-N... Control !
accept the things I cannot change,
Courage, to change the things I can, and
Wisdom to hide the bodies of those people
I had to kill because they pissed me off.
The missus says I have "control freak" tendencies. In my old age, I am starting to agree with her. My recent obsession with sobriety and exercise are directly attributable to my unemployment. As I cannot control my job-lessness (at least to a satisfactory conclusion), I am focusing on what I can control.
How this all interacts with my obsessive/addictive traits is obvious... I am now addictive to positive behaviors. The little deals with yourself you make... "if I do "insert activity here", than something positive will happen."
And here's something completely unrelated: The Ting Tings. Pop confection... but out of my control. I dig it:
Toonage:

Let's Go Mets!!!!!
Went to the Mets' debacle last nite. Perhaps the last time Nazz jr and I will be at the old stadium in Flushing. Yes, it's a dump, but it's MY dump.
I must have gone to a couple of hundred Mets games at Shea Stadium in my life. Growing up a couple of miles away from the park will let you do that. I remember walking through Flushing Meadow Park back when I was 12 years old to go to games and sit in the upper deck for $1.60. These days, I don't let my kids play outside without watching em. And yet, back in the day, my mom would let me and my pre-teen pals trek a couple of miles to go to games.
I was at the 1986 World Series Game 7, when the Mets beat the Red Sox thanks to a couple of botched Red Sox plays (hooray for Bob Stanley's wild pitch and Bill Buckner allowing Mookie Wilson's grounder to go through the five hole). I actually snuck into the game, but that's a story for another posting.
I also have a big bag full of gen-u-ine Shea Stadium turf (well, it's dead grass and dirt now) from when we stormed the field when they clinched the division back in '86. We actually got written up in the NY newspapers since we jumped onto the netting behind home plate and jumped 20 feet onto the field (amazing how Vodka, Champagne and Valium reduce your inhibitions).
We're down to possibly one game left. The Mets need to beat the Marlins tomorrow and have the Brewers lose. Or, if they both finish with the same record, it's a one game play-off on Monday. So, the Metskies BETTER FREAKIN' WIN!
It was sad to say goodbye last nite. The new park is going to be beautiful (at a cost much higher for tix of course) ... and less seats (to drive up the demand); but will it be home?
Here's a couple of pix from last nite... I have tickets for one of the play-off games, I hope I get to use em!
You can see Citifield (the new stadium, in the background

Strummerville
Hard to believe that Joe Strummer has been gone over five years already.
I was lucky enough to see The Clash once. I was at one of the legendary June 1981 NYC shows at Bonds. I had given this girl I knew from school money for a ticket when they went on sale and didn't see her again until I ran into her at a May Day Pot Parade (from Washington Square Park to Central Park). Lo and behold, she presents me with a ticket!
Distant memories of the show... driving into NYC and finding a parking space in my 1967 Plymouth Fury. Buying some sort of white powder off a brother in the street; thinking it was THC but lord knows what it really was; running into my Jappy sort of girlfriend (how did SHE get a ticket?), and than seeing the best band in the world. I remember the poor reception the rap stuff got, but seeing em do Safe European Home and London Calling was all a young Punk coulda ever asked for.
Never saw em again. Passed up the show at Shea Stadium with The Who (too "commercial" for my delicate Punk sensibilities). What an idiot I was!
I heartily recommend that you see The Future Is Unwritten; which is a great documentary about Joe.
And if you're in the bar tonite, raise a glass to Joe Strummer! A true Punk Hero.
Toonage:
