Sometime To Return

I was in the big city yesterday, lucky enough to have a bunch of meetings (meetings = hope for bizness) and I found myself around the corner from where an old friend works. This person was someone, who, for the past few years, I have been very close to. As a result of the last few months of jumping on and falling off assorted wagons of vice, I had cut off communication... as I had with virtually everyone I know (except for immediate family).

Aside from  being on hiatus from my band due to the same reasons, this was the most drastic self-censure I had undertaken. This person had helped me thru alot of psychotic and personal "episodes" (and been honest enough to call me on my shit)  over the last few years, but, when I cut people off, I REALLY cut them off.

I swallowed my pride and visited them yesterday. I figured, the worst they could do was have me physically removed from the premises (I hadn't done anything to this person except cease communication, but ya never know how people are gonna react). Surprised to see me, even shocked, but I was greeted warmly. We talked for about 30 minutes, with yours truly attempting to explain the craziness of the last few months. As this person is no stranger to some of the demons that have visited me, it was very helpful and even therapeutic.

It went well and hopefully, when I am ready to venture out into the world of socialization, I'll have a comrade in arms again.

It's nice to have some real friends that don't turn their back on you. T'is a rare and noble gift.

Sometime To Return (Soul Asylum)
I ran the way
I walked a fine line
Wasted time or need to find
You will call and I'll take mine
And to remind me
I am fine
What you are is
What you see and
You see me and we can be
Something we can call we
We are we are
Doing the what-we-can
Working without a plan
I'm beginning to understand
It's getting out of hand
I have seen these do-si-do's
I've walked up on this road before
Picked it apart for hours and hours and
Hours and hours
Of turning
Tossing and
Looking and
Listening
To you and all the fuckedd up things you do
But you're doing the best you can
With every grain of sand
That's trickling through your hands
So catch me if you can
If someday comes early
Comes whipping, comes whirling
To take you for all you have learned
The tables are turning
Your bridges are burning
My destination sometime to return
Throw away your calendar and
Sign up your salamander
Get up and get down
Right in the town and look around
Get up and do something
Your time to choose it
Do it do it do it do it do it!
Doing the best I can
Living without a plan
I'm taking what I can get
I haven't seen nothing yet
If one day you wake up and
Find what you make up
Come and get me
     Come and take me there
Into your illusion
I make my intrusion
Anytime, anyplace, anywhere
The hourglass is draining fast
It knows no future
Holds no past
And all this too will come to pass
Never forever whatever
If someday comes early
Comes whipping, comes whirling
To take you for all you have learned
The tables are turning
Your bridges are burning
My destination sometime to return...

And A Storm Is Threatenin'

One of the advantages AND disadvantages of being Management is that you find out the magnitude and date of when the bomb is going to be dropped. While the names of most of the soon to be extinguished may not be divulged, the knowledge of what's soon to come makes one crawl into that bottle of whiskey without much haste.

My industry is in dire straits currently (and NO, I am not in the stock market). Serious cuts will have to be made for us to survive.

Everyday brings more horrible news about companies cutting hundreds and sometimes even thousands of jobs. The most current news is that 1.2 MILLION Americans have lost their jobs in this latest (don't call it a) depression. 240,000 lost their jobs last month! And 300,000 more are projected to lose their jobs in November.

Anybody wanna buy an apple?

Feelin' Minnesota

I gotta go to Minnesota on business. A three hour flight and then a three hour drive up north. That oughtta be interesting... I hope I don't hit a moose. They have moose in Minnesota, right? I know they got mosquito's.

Since I'll be staying over in Minneapolis, I was gonna do a Husker Du/Replacements tour. Look up their old haunts. Or maybe hang out with Prince.

But instead, I'm gonna hit a Twins game. Always wanted to see where this guy kicked ass.

But I will stay away from this place. Jeez, what a waste of real estate. And to think, people consider it a tourist destination!
Here's some toonage from Minnesota's finest.

The day the sun stood still

Today's the summer solstice you ritualistic mofo's. An extra helping of toonage today.

"Solstice" is derived from two Latin words: "sol" meaning sun, and "sistere," to cause to stand still. This is because, as the summer solstice approaches, the noonday sun rises higher and higher in the sky on each successive day. On the day of the solstice, it rises an imperceptible amount, compared to the day before. In this sense, it "stands still."

Soul Asylum - Made To Be Broken

Sirens are a-screaming,
shots ring out at night
Movie cameras rolling in
And there goes my hero with his head between his legs
And all this time I believed in him
(from: "Never Really Been")

Once upon a time, there was a band called Soul Asylum. They formed in Minneapolis in the early 80’s and briefly called themselves Loud Fast Rules before changing their name to Soul Asylum. As the last of the first wave of Minneapolis Punk bands (including The Replacements and Husker Du, Soul Asylum had a hard punk sound, but also had trace elements of the 70’s stoner middle America rock ethic as well (long hair, flannel shirts, etc). Their first album Say What You Will was actually produced by Husker Du’s Bob Mould.

But it was with their next two albums; Made To Be Broken and While You Were Out that Soul Asylum “broke the Mould” and for a fleeting moment, were the best band in the world. Their mid 80’s shows were the stuff of legend, blending thrashing chords, anthemic lyrics and catchy choruses plus bizarre covers showing their love of mid 70’s fm radio crap (Foreigner’s Juke Box Hero, for example). Time's Incinerator, a cassette only release, was also released at during this period, featuring a blistering cover of James Brown's “Hot Pants”.

These albums were followed up by Clam Dip & Other Delights, Hang Time and The Horse They Rode In On…all decent albums, but not to the heights of their previous output. Some great songs were on these albums ("Cartoon" & "Sometime To Return" are standouts), but their moment of indie rock godhood had passed.

In the 90’s of course, Soul Asylum would become mega stars, releasing the Grave Dancers Union album which featured "Runaway Train" and "Black Gold".
This was Soul Asylum in the realm of Tom Petty / John Mellancamp type “heartland of America” swill.

Lead singer Dave Pirner was banging Hollywood bimbos and the band was performing at President Clinton’s inauguration and winning Grammy’s. This was followed by Let Your Dim Light Shine, which also sold well, featuring the song "Misery". Their last album was 1998’s Candy From A Stranger. They actually released a “comeback” album last year called The Silver Lining; which met with indifference at best.

Feh.

But for a while there (1984-1987), they were fuckin’ great.

Ignoring their latter day crap, we feature:

From Say What You Will : Long Day

From Made To Be Broken : Tied To The Tracks
& Never Really Been

From While You Were Out : Closer To The Stars

And a couple of rare ones:

To Sir With Love (with Lulu!)
Sexual Healing (the Marvin Gaye classic)

Have at em!
