Exile On Main Street

So, the Rolling Stones have resuscitated the classic "Exile On Main Street" and added some tracks.

10 "new tracks". Meh. Most Stones freaks have at least a handful of the "unreleased" stuff (I had 5 of the 10 already).

The remastered original tracks are brighter and have more emphasis on the horns and piano than the original muddier mix. Of course, since most folks listen to shitty mp3 versions on portable devices, your auditory mileage may vary.

A sharper eared comrade of mine is convinced that Jagger re-recorded some of the vocals on the "rare" stuff.

With regard to the "rare" stuff, there's nothing here that would have made the original album any better. There are traces of other Stones tunes in many of these (echoes of "Paint It Black" in
"So Divine", "Good Time Women" is a rewrite of "Tumbling Dice") and alt versions of others ("Soul Survivor" with a druggy Keef singing, "Loving Cup").

Is it worth the investment? Well, if you've been listening to your scratchy old vinyl version of Exile, than it's probably high time to go digital. However, if you already have it on cd, don't bother. You can source out many 1968-1972 Stones rarities on-line (in fact, scroll down, and I have posted a few trax that are NOT on the new re-release).

The documentary on the making of Exile is very very kick ass.

A Caterwaul, Indeed

We came, we played, we kicked ass.

Caterwaul Of Sound played in hipster Williamsburg in Brooklyn USA Wednesday nite.
Our first show. In fact, the first show ever performed by our rhythm guitar player and our singer! As reported before, we were on a bill with a bunch of metal and goth type bands. We, of course, are neither.

But, dare I say we acquitted ourselves nicely. There may have never been a band anywhere that had as much fun playing as we did on Wednesday nite.

People even came to me after the show and told us we were really good! And they weren't even our friends! In fact, our friends even said we were good (and our friends would've definitely told us if we sucked!). And, we had the biggest crowd. It was sorta like a reunion of sorts for a bunch of us folks who have drifted apart. So it was nice to get everyone together again.
Lots of photos taken and a pro (2 camera video) with sound from the board is being mixed and will be ready next week. Maybe I'll even post some up!

There were some very strange "surgically enhanced" gals walking around in bustiers and whatnot, they ended up doing back-up vocals for my friends' band Guns Religion And Money (they were the ones who set up the show).

Unfortunately, we were promised a 55 year old "Betty Page" type stripper; and that failed to materialize.

Highlites included our lead singer falling down and doing a faceplant on the steps leading to the stage, the lead guitar getting kicked in the head, and yours truly tripping over his cord several times.

No one ever rocked the leather m/c like the Ramones.

Thanks to this post at Strange Reaction, I got to thinkin' of my original m/c Black Leather Jacket. It was 'round 1983 or so and, being the broke suburban kid I was; I didn't have the cash to buy one. It always amazed me that the so-called gutter punks all had em... probably mommy and daddy bought em for em when they went back to their Connecticut homes.

But I digress. I started going out with this girl who's parents definitely had serious bucks (her dad was a dentist in some Long Island high falutin' town). She was a couple of years younger than me and probably figured it was cool to be dating Mr. College Asshole Nihilistic Punk Rocker. Aside from her proclivity towards supplying me with drugs and payin' my way into stuff, she was pretty cool in other ways. Once time she made me this really cool Suicidal Tendencies shirt (like the one's that were pictured on the original album cover). I actually still have the back of that shirt.

Anyway, we were all also into the Grateful Dead and one day she presents me with this beautiful heavy duty (not some asian knock-off) Schott MC jacket. Only one problem, she had painted this absolutely kick ass Steal Your Face graphic on the entire back of the jacket.
Well, no way was I going to wear THAT to punk shows. It was bad enough I had long hair. I didn't want to spend ALL my time fighting.
Sooo... Mr. Asshole spray-paints the entire back of the jacket back to black and than throws the usual punk stickers de rigeur on the back as well. My girlfriend was crushed. But I was such an inconsiderate douchebag to her in other ways, I guess she chalked it up to my sparkling personality.
This jacket served me well for many years. It also got totally beat to shit, but survived (it was really well made). Than I left it at a friend of mine and he somehow lost it. Thanks for that, D.

In retrospect, I was a complete dickhead for destroying the jacket. And I hope my ex girlfriend found someone to treat her a fuckload better than I ever did. At least HER pain is over. She didn't marry me!

Baseball Altamont

I could care less if every Baseball player was taking steroids and HGH. If their heads exploded one day after they retired it would make no difference to me. As long as my team was successful (and The Yankees sure were), what do I care?
Athletes have been cheating forever… whether it was corked bats, stolen signs, amphetamines or anything else they could do to get an edge.
If someone gave me the opportunity to make millions of dollars playing baseball by shooting a needle into my arse, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
And of course they were going to lie and plead innocence… wouldn’t you?

The Heroin Diaries

The book du jour at the residence is Nikki Sixx's "The Heroin Diaries". First off, I never liked Motley Crue very much. As a punk, I hated hair metal. And while I was always in favor of sex, drugs and rock n roll, I absolutely despised the attempt at "singing" that Vince Neil screeched. The Crue had some righteous riffs, but why would you have a giant pussy like Vince Neil lead your band? According to The Heroin Diaries (and Tommy Lee's book as well), the rest of the band thought he was an asshole as well. Plus, Vince Neil murdered Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle and paralyzed another person in a 1984 car crash.

However, Nikki Sixx seems to have been a guy I coulda gotten along with. Well, aside from the Heroin of course. He professes to have been influenced by all the "right" bands... Iggy, Sex Pistols, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, etc.

It's nicely packaged, with Ralph Steadman style nightmarish art on virtually every page (lots of black and red)

The book itself reproduces his diaries from 1986 through 1988, at the height of The Crue's stardom and the depth's of Sixx's addiction. According to the book, he grew up pretty much unloved and abandoned. He's not exactly blaming his addictions on his childhood, but it certainly seems to be a factor. But Sixx takes all the credit for becoming a junkie and does not blame it on the r n r lifestyle. Escapades with former Prince anti-ingenue Vanity and various seedy denizens of the L.A. rock underground provide lotsa laughs (not!) and it's a miracle that Sixx was capable of keeping a diary, much less playing bass and writing the material for the band.

A cautionary tale to be sure and one that I would recommend to any teenagers. Hey kids, hard drugs are bad, mmmkay? There is absolutely no glamour or bragging in the book. It's simply a harrowing and sad tale of a guy who had it all, and almost blew it all.
