Not Grateful He's Dead - 17 Years Ago Today

The phone rang about 9:30. “Nazz, Jerry died”

“What are you talking about” I answered.

“Jerry died!, it just came over the news!”

“Holy shit! I guess fall tour is cancelled!” I countered.

I immediately bolted from my office and went down to the NPR radio office a couple of floors down. Sure enough, I pulled a news release that gave brief details that Captain Trips had departed a few hours before. I still have the printed teletype announcement somewhere in the Nomad archives.

I called Mrs. Nomad and she said “Well I guess that’s why the radio is playing nothing but Dead tunes”.

The rest of the day was a blur… the messages on rec.music.gdead were flying faster than they could be read. I started getting calls from other heads, while my co-workers were buzzing about (it was not exactly a well kept secret that I was into the Dead).

Later that day, the missus and I went to Central Park… it seemed to make sense to us to go over to Strawberry Fields (the John Lennon memorial area). When we got there, the area was teeming with people, playing songs, weeping and wandering around in a daze.

At some point, MTV was interviewing people and they grabbed us for an interview. I must have been more lucid than the other people they talked to, because they recorded me and the missus long enough that they actually had to change tapes. I remember saying something about how that was the end of The Grateful Dead and it would be a “sham” if the Dead carried on without Jerry under the “Grateful Dead” brand.
The next morning I start getting calls from a lot of people telling me they had seen me interviewed on TV as part of the coverage. I also got a lot of shit from people for “dissing” the Dead for saying they shouldn’t carry on. In fact, people came up to me over a year later at shows and asked me if I was “that guy”.

Fucking hippies.

A couple of days later, (with the “official” wake happening in San Francisco), thousands of people gathered in NYC in Central Park again to celebrate and mourn Jerry. We brought Princess Nomad with us (she was a tot as you can see in the picture. I remember running into people we knew, including one of Mrs. Nomad’s old boyfriends.

A few weeks later, someone told me that I had my letter about Jerry published in Rolling Stone. Only thing was, I didn't remember ever writing a letter to Rolling Stone. But, there it was!

I’ve been to dozens of Grateful dead “offshoot” bands since… Further, The Other Ones, The Dead, Phil & Friends, Ratdog, et al. But of course it hasn’t been the same. Sometimes the shows have been better than the Grateful Dead (much better, in fact).

But it’s never been “as good”. When Jerry died, everything changed.

Chocolate doughnuts and heroin. It killed Jerry. Watch it, kids.

Oh, how I long for the days when my worry’s were only copping a ticket to the next Dead show!

In The Flesh?

I am contemplating seeing the Roger Waters "The Wall" show as it is in my town in the next week. I have seen all varieties of Pink Floyd post 1980 and loved em all. As much as I am a Pink Floyd freak, and as much as a spectacle it will be, I am reluctant to part with the $$$ (nosebleeds start at $75 and times are tough). I missed seeing The Wall back in the last century, when the real Pink Floyd (Waters/Gilmour/Mason/Wright) toured it on it's initial run because I didn't have the $15 that the tickets cost. I regret that, and I will regret not seeing it this time around if I can't find a cheap ducat.

Times change, but they don't really, do they?

Embarking on a different course, I am posting up some songs that came on at random this morn. There should be enough diversity here that ya'll should download em all.

Have at em.

He's (still) Gone

15 years ago today, Jerry Garcia became one of the actual dead. Whatever your opinion of the man and his band; it cannot be denied that Garcia had a major tranformative effect on music and culture.

R.I.P. Captain Trips, my life was enriched by your presence in it.

It's A Song About Turtles

I have no idea why this song is making me laugh so much right now. Could it be the many Dead shows in which we would sing the wrong lyrics to f#ck with the tapers, and than of course the grand build up to INSPIRATION. Oh, did we use to love to f#ck with people. Can't blame it on the drugs or booze either. We were just Punk Rock douchebags. That car blasting Black Flag in the parking lot? That would be us, sunshine.
Yeah, I know, I went to 200 plus Dead shows and followed em all around (and probably another 100 Dead related since the Fat Man checked off this mortal coil). But I wasn't a Deadhead. I wore footwear! Yeah, and denial is a river in Egypt.

Apocalypse Soon

The other day was Earth Day and everyone had their 24 hour feel good moment. And now it's back to your regular programming. I especially like this rancid bag of pus, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who is AGAINST Flourescent light bulbs and FOR leaded gas! At this point, why don't the Republikkkans just show their cloven hooves and horns and get it over with.

Meanwhile, gas is over four bucks a gallon, the war is still on and worst of all, freakin beer prices are skyrocketing.

It's the end of days, kiddies... so grab a seat and embrace the apocalypse.

Reggae De Blanc

What do Jerry Garcia and Rancid have in common? Well, aside from kick ass bass players and a San Francisco pedigree, not very much. Except of course, for a healthy respect for Reggae music.

The early punks were influenced by Reggae as well, it seemed that it was almost mandatory for the old school Brits to dabble in the genre (Clash, SLF, Generation X, Slits, etc). And the late 70's Two Tone scene certainly was a direct result of Reggae.

Here are some prime exhibits of white boys doing the Reggae thang.

Irie ya mofo's!

Any Day Now, Any Day Now

They say everything can be replaced,
Yet every distance is not near.
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

They say every man needs protection,
They say every man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he's not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.

I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

Happy D-Day - Jerry Garcia!

It was 12 years ago today that Jerry Garcia left this mortal coil.
Bummer.
Those darn chocolate doughnuts finally caught up with him. A bad day, but that cholesteral will get you sooner or later.

As I stand firmly entrenched in both the Deadhead and Punk Rock camps, I offer polar opposites in music today.

Hey now Jerry, see you on the other side.

Friday Grab Bag - Prison Bound!

Here's to the most American of experiences. Prison!
As of June 30, 2006--
-- 2,245,189 prisoners were held in Federal or State prisons or in local jails.

-- Over 50% of those held in federal prisons are incarcerated due to non violent (ie: drug) offenses. Yep, the War on Drugs is really working out!

- - there were an estimated 497 prison inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents; up from 411 at year end 1995.

I would suspect that many of my fellow travelers have spent a night in the pokey. Hey, it's good for character building, right?
