Who Am I?

I am about to commence activities on another project. This is for an entertainment website which is starting up in May. I will be the NY music dude (dude? what is this 1970?). No pay, but this is (supposedly) a somewhat high profile gig (or so the rose colored glasses they made me wear make it seem).

My dilemma is this: I have to be somewhat "nice" on this new site. As it is targeted to be a money making proposition, with actual funding and an "llc" in it's moniker, I cannot be the snarky, hostile, nasty little monkey I am on this here personal site. I can be a bit mean, but the site is trying to get advertising, etc.

Hey, I don't mind writing that way. After all, I have this creative outlet to spew my venom, no need to distribute the wealth. And if I can get some free shwag and get into some shows (and get Princess Nomad into some stuff as well), then whutdafuk.

Of course, if you've been playing at home, you should have figgered out long ago that Nazz Nomad is not the name on my income tax returns. It's a cyber-name. Yeah, I know. No shit, Sherlock.

But I can't really use Nazz Nomad, since it's linked with this site. I have my rock n roll name, which is not used here (I actually first starting using it 20 years ago, when I was in the porn industry). Ironically, many of my friends know me by that name and use it as my nickname for the most part. I certainly am not going to use my real name, since my actual birth given name is as pure as the driven snow as far as the 'net.

So, I guess I will use my rock n roll name.

You folks, just keep calling me Nazz. And step away from my beer.

Covers? Covers!

As a trainspotting effort of sorts (or something), Brother Ib of the esteemed Sibling Shot On The Bleachers and yers truly conspired to throw out some cover versions of toonage that are superior to the originals. Being the anti-dogmatic reprobates that genetics deemed, he threw out one and I am trowing out far less than the ten we targeted.

More importantly: WHAT ARE YOURS???????

Do You Wanna Dance - Ramones -- Bobby Freeman:
The Ramones only wanted to be a top 40 band. Was that so much to ask for? You can tell the Joey songs pretty easily from the Dee Dee songs. The Joey songs were about love. And Joey picked the covers. This one blew the roof off of the original early 60's hit.

Police And Thieves - The Clash -- Junior Murvin:
White reggae at it's finest. Though Strummer would reference the original and tell people to go out and listen to it.

My Way - Sid Vicious -- Paul Frank Sinatra: Covered more famously by Frank Sinatra perhaps, but Sid's version is the standard. "To think, I killed a cat" Genius. Plus Scorcese used Sid's version at the end of Goodfellas!

12XU - Minor Threat -- Wire: Sure, Wire's version is an old school classic, but for sheer energy and THE RAWK, you can't beat Minor Threat.

Acoustic Muthafuckas

Here are some neat-o acoustic versions of some classic punk tunes.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

Robert Frost

Toonage:
Dinosaur Jr - Borstal Breakout (Sham 69)
Frank Turner - Pay To Cum (Bad Brains)
Bill Janovitz - Straight To Hell (The Clash)
Lisa Loeb - Video Nasty (The Damned)

Clean Liver, Dirty Soul

46 days sober. sobriety sucks. went out last night to get my rock n roll on and could neither rock nor roll. got up on stage and did a sorta crappy version of the damned's NEW ROSE. the only six pack i've seen lately is the one that's developing on my abs. up to three miles running, 2 miles on the elliptical and 1 mile on the stairmaster. the missus says i am getting too skinny and i need ass implants. and my buddy's are telling me i am turning into an emo pussy due to my lack of consumption.

and i am waiting on what could be a dream job, but the company i interviewed with has a human resources dept that is taking their sweeeeet ass time. don't they know that i am slowly dying, in anti-ci-pattttttiiiiiiooooooooooonnn?

a friday poem:

snow covered graves beckoning...waiting...like expectant mothers ready to take back what was once spilt forth.

the only true reclamation project...back into the dirt.

ps- wanna see something cool? go here. it's got isolated tracks of bass, drums, vox and geetar for songs from the clash, the who, the ramones and more. john entwhistle isolated bass!!!!!!

Amerikkka's Sweetheart

Me loves me some Sarah Palin! She's stepping down from her Governor-Ship to "help America" or some other crap.

I am personally hoping she does a girl on girl vid with this skinny, soul-less, evil skank.

So, we get to look forward to the next couple of years of Palin's "punditry". No doubt, by the end of the summer she'll have her own show on Fox News (you know - the "fair and balanced" station); and then of course, the 2012 Presidential run.

Bottom line is; if Obama can pull off what he's trying to do (and I pray he can), Jesus H Christ himself couldn't win for the Repugnikkkans in 2012.

To keep with this "patriotic" theme, a couple of days late and a dollar short, here's a "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" selection for the Fourth Of July. Or something.

Don't be surprised if a crack in the ice...

... appears under your feet.

and Good-Morning, Smithers-Jones,,,

At some point, the realization comes that maybe there's something better. Loyalty is great, and as they take turns shoveling the dirt onto your box the pretty words are spoken. But who's the sucker? You are, of course. Because you always give more than you get. And you're always a line item on an entry pad. And don't forget it. The orchestra on the Titanic didn't get any extra props for going down with the ship, did they?

The struggle continues, but maybe the weight pulling you down gets a little (or a lot) lighter somewhere else. Sure, you lose all that built up good will and credibility. But sometimes the long run has a more attractive finish line.

One thing is for sure, sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel ISN'T a train coming at you. Sometimes, it's a better way out.

So, do I feel lucky, Punk?

Do I?

Gimmie Noise

Yeah I Know I Look Like Hell
Smokin' And Drinkin' I'm Feelin' Swell

Favorite Thing - The Replacements
(my buddy Jeff took this picture of the Replacements at Maxwells in 1986!)

Caterwaul Of Sound v 4.0 tonite. Can't fucking wait. The rock must be unleashed. It's hard to get our little gang of fuck-ups together, due to work/family/etc; so when we do, it's a beautiful thing. None of this stuff tonite, but we'll make up for it, I suspect.

(edit) - and we did- I got to play a longer and more psychotic version of Interstellar Overdrive than Syd Barrett ever did. And I played it on guitar... and I'm a bass player!

Here's some bands ripping the shit out of other band's classics.

Toonage:
Yo La Tengo - Favorite Thing (Replacements)
The Polyphonic Spree - Lithium (Nirvana)
Rancid - Cheat (The Clash)
Lunachicks - Noise Annoys / Promises (Buzzcocks)
Pennywise - Touch Of Grey (Grateful Dead)
Foo Fighters - Gas Chamber - (Angry Samoans)

Apocalypse Soon

The other day was Earth Day and everyone had their 24 hour feel good moment. And now it's back to your regular programming. I especially like this rancid bag of pus, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who is AGAINST Flourescent light bulbs and FOR leaded gas! At this point, why don't the Republikkkans just show their cloven hooves and horns and get it over with.

Meanwhile, gas is over four bucks a gallon, the war is still on and worst of all, freakin beer prices are skyrocketing.

It's the end of days, kiddies... so grab a seat and embrace the apocalypse.

Toonage:
Jerry Garcia Band - Save Mother Earth (live 1-19-72)
Dramarama - What Are We Gonna Do
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around (early take)
The Clash - Four Horsemen (Vanilla Tapes)
New Bomb Turks - Apocalyptic Dipstick

Friday Grab Bag - Under The Covers

Sick as a dog with a nasty cold (thanks to Nazz jr.) and back problems as sciatica is kicking my arse (also due to the newly invented sport of base/foot/basketball invented by Nazz jr. and myself).

So, no great insights with regard to the world in general or my little corner of it. Just some solid kick ass rawk n rowl cover versions.

Reggae De Blanc

What do Jerry Garcia and Rancid have in common? Well, aside from kick ass bass players and a San Francisco pedigree, not very much. Except of course, for a healthy respect for Reggae music.

The early punks were influenced by Reggae as well, it seemed that it was almost mandatory for the old school Brits to dabble in the genre (Clash, SLF, Generation X, Slits, etc). And the late 70's Two Tone scene certainly was a direct result of Reggae.

Here are some prime exhibits of white boys doing the Reggae thang.

Irie ya mofo's!

Airwaves dreaming

"I like radio better than television because if you make a mistake on radio, they don't know. You can make anything up on radio."
Phil Rizzuto

"Anytime in radio that you can reach somebody on an emotional level, you're really connecting."
Casey Kasem

"I love the fact that 35 years later, I still hear my songs on the radio."
Ronnie Spector
"The radio makes hideous sounds"
Bob Dylan

Long ago, bands used to need radio airplay to expose their music to the masses. There are dozens of songs that reflect this. Here are a few you may not have that come to mind...

I absolutely love the concept of the Ramones being packaged for the kindergarten set; complete with children singing in the background! When my progeny were tots, one of their favorite movies was Rock N Roll High School. This one is from an album called "Brats On The Beat: Ramones For Kids".

Radio Radio - Beastie Boys w/ Elvis Costello (Live Saturday Nite Live) : The legendary performance when the Beasties came out and started to play Sabotage and Elvis recreated his 1978 SNL performance.

Capital Radio - The Clash (live 5-28-77 UK) : The sound of a revolution. Revolutions don't always succeed.

Do You Remember Rock N Roll Radio - Ni-Hao! : Another Ramones cover, I think these chicks are from Japan or Viet Nam. This song cracks me up.

Baseball Altamont

I could care less if every Baseball player was taking steroids and HGH. If their heads exploded one day after they retired it would make no difference to me. As long as my team was successful (and The Yankees sure were), what do I care?
Athletes have been cheating forever… whether it was corked bats, stolen signs, amphetamines or anything else they could do to get an edge.
If someone gave me the opportunity to make millions of dollars playing baseball by shooting a needle into my arse, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
And of course they were going to lie and plead innocence… wouldn’t you?

In tribute to these brave warriors… I humbly offer the Bleedin’ Out Baseball mix.

We're a Garage Band

"We're a garage band
We come from Garageland"
--The Clash

Sometimes it's just nice to kick out the jams, muthufuckas.

So that's what me and some pals are doing tonight. As we have all been in Rock n Roll stasis as of late, we figured it was high time (and it will be a high time) to hook up and blast the shit out of some rock.
After all, what's wrong with making alot of noise, aided by various intoxicants and a three chord ideaology.

Undoubtedly, it will be sloppy caterwaul of sound.

Perfect!

PS - If John Doe is touring in your area... go see him! Saw the show in NYC last nite and it was fantastic. A smattering of old X tunes, but the solo stuff was great. And GO HERE to stream his new album A Year In The Wilderness.

And if you want to play the home version of our jam... here's the songs we will probably start out with. Just punch a hole through your speaker, fire one up and it'll be like you're there!

Toonage:
Ramones - Surfin Bird (live Northwestern U 1979)
AC DC - Highway To Hell
Sonic Youth - Death Valley '69
Mudhoney - In and Out of Grace
Stooges - 1970 (live 1971 - Cinn Pop Fest)
Hole - Celebrity Skin
Pixies - Gouge Away

Fuhgettaboutit

Here's my obligatory Sopranos post. I liked the ending. It was punk rock.
The producers threw it in our faces and said "create your own ending". But, those last few minutes were pretty tense. Totally manipulative, waiting for an ending that never came. How many people thought they lost their TV connection when screen went black!

I wanted Tony to wake up next to Suzanne Pleshette and tell her about the crazy dream he had (like they did on the old Newhart show).

How do YOU think they shoulda ended it?
