A Bad Brains Hanukkah

Hey it's Hanukkah, so what better excuse than to throw down this legendary 1982 show by the 13th tribe of Israel- the Bad Brains.
Happy Festival Of Lights, muthafuckas!!!!!!

The Bad Brains Smoked All Of Our Weed

"Wanna go see the Bad Brains?" "Well sure, except that the show is sold out and face value of the tickets is over $40"! But I know someone with an extra for $60.

Fuck me with a chainsaw!

$40 to see Bad Brains. I think if you added all the money I spent on Bad Brains tickets in my youth it wouldn't come to $40!

But, good for H.R. and company- whatever blood they can squeeze from the stone is OK by me.

Man, the Bad Brains were fucking awesome. I never went in much for their Reggae, but you're lookin' at a band that were THE FASTEST, HARDEST AND BAD ASS motherfuckers from the golden age of Punk Rawk. They were actually the band playing at CBGB's when the seats were torn out.

The young and more energetic Nazz was at this legendary show!

I remember being in school and writing a big old article about the Brains "Rock For Light" lp ... about how they were Black, from DC and Punk rockers. Man- if that's not gonna give you a serious hard-on for authority- nothing will.

So... onto a story.

It wuz about Nineteen Eigthy something and Steve and I were gonna catch the Bad brains at some club in Manhattan. It turns out the place is now a pizza place (which makes me laugh whenever I see it).

Anyway, there's frick and frack (aka Steve and I) chatting up H.R. and Dr. Know (or it might have been Daryl- who the fuck remembers), and we ask them if they wanna get high. The set-up of the place was an upstairs bar and then a basement with a stage. So, they of course agree and proceed to smoke Steve's entire stash in a huge spliff (they rolled). There must have been close to a quarter ounce in that bone (more like a dinosaur femur).

This took a few minutes of course and we got to talking- they were nice guys (well- why wouldn't they be- they were smokin' OUR weed!) but we talked alot about the DC scene (way too violent) and Amerikkka in general (Reagan bad/weeed good). H.R. was pretty interesting- this was before we went off the rails.

Anyway, we finish up and they say their goodbyes and go play 90 minutes or so of completely unhinged hardcore and reggae. Steve and I can barely stand up and these fuckers are making their instruments melt.

Here's the the Bad Brains- long may they shred!!!!!!!!

The Walking Dead

If you haven't been watching THE WALKING DEAD... you have been missing the best TV show of the year. Totally gory, totally violent and pretty faithful to the original source material. Below, you can see the first episode.

And speaking of soul-less maggot infested pus-filled walking automatons with no regard for anything but their own base needs, has anyone read this "true crime" book yet?

Acoustic Muthafuckas

Here are some neat-o acoustic versions of some classic punk tunes.

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

NYHC Lives! (again)

(nope, we aren't on the flyer!)

A7 was THE place in the early 80's to get your real hardcore punk rock fix in New York City. The club itself was a little shithole across from Tompkins Square Park in Alphabet City in Manhattan. Unlike clubs like CBGB's and Irving Plaza, A7 pretty much was all hardcore punk, all the time. Bands like the Beastie Boys (yes, they started out Punk), Ism, Kraut, Reagan Youth and Heart Attack (Jesse Malin's old crew) would play there, along with whatever outta town bands were in the area.
I don't think the place could hold more than 50 people, but they'd pack em in. I dimly remember a dog (a German Shepherd?) present often as well.
Anyway, the place closed 'round '84; but there is a huge show at the Knitting Factory this Saturday that will be a reunion of sorts with many survivors of the old scene scheduled to play. Of course, many participants no longer have to shave their heads, as Mother Nature has seen to make em natural skinheads!

Well, yer Uncle Nazz is actually playing this show! My bro DV and Caterwauller-in-Arms J-Lo are The Betrayed, and we will be going on somewhere between 11 pm and midnite. We'll be playing all your favorite Betrayed toonz too!

I am really looking forward to seeing some folks that I haven't seen since the 80's!
Big fun! ~ (or something!)

Old and in the Warped

I officially cross over a Cultural line tomorrow. I am taking my 13 year old daughter to The Warped Tour. I have been to several of the Warped shows over the years, but me and my droogs were always the drunken rowdy mofo's. Now, I have to be the voice of responsibility.
But it's a small price to pay as I continue to lead my little girl away from the Britney and High School Musical fodder and into Rock N Roll (or what passes for it these days). At least Bad Religion is playing; they're as ancient as I am!
Warped was great for a couple of reasons- The tremendous volume of bands playing (at any given point there would be something decent to see) and ... THE BEER TENT!
The Beer Tent? Yeah! When 99% of the attendees are not of legal drinking age, the Beer tent is empty. Which means, no lines and the opportunity to piss away tons of money on shitty beer. But, since it's hot out, shitty beer does the trick.
So, as I escort my daughter, I will be eschewing the beer (do they even sell beer at Warped anymore?), holding off on the hidden bottles of vodka, and turning away from the aromatic herbs. And, of course...no pit and no moshing either.
Yep, I'll be the old guy in the Husker Du T-shirt. Gee, what did YOU do in the war, daddy?
And if any of those little whiney emo kids even glance at my little princess, I will wreak havoc upon them!
